I think I know of three NM riders post onlist: there's Tim [Lastname]
in Santa Fe who recently posted a sale; Ryan Watson in ABQ (who is
usually Out of State riding brevets), and myself in ABQ.

Then there are, also, Tarik Saleh who may not be on this list but is
worthy of it; Jamie; and one or two or three others who were on or
loosely affiliated with the iBob list if not on this list. One taught
at St. John's College and had or has a cycling blog.

Can anyone give an accurate census? Any interest in a group ride? I'd
be interested in going to Santa Fe or perhaps having Ryan map out a
ride in the east mountains.

What about Don? Are you still here?
Unless it cools down, any ride I organize will start after sunset!

Yes, Don too -- tho' I thought he was ibob.

At least some of us are manly enough to ride in the sun -- did a
rather chore-like 15 miler early this afternoon trying to explore the
sand roads on the north west mesa -- north of Paseo de Volcan -- only
to find that the sand was deeper than is pleasant, the washboard
deeper than tolerable, the scenery more trashy than bucolic and the
directions more mazy than inviting. Will have to find other west mesa
roads to ride. At least I got in some miles of climbing against a
strong headwind! It's the bosque for me from now on, unless it's early
morning or until the city closes it for fire safety.

OK, Im a pure interloper from the VT. I have been to NM twice and absolutely loved the state, but have a question.  Today it was in the hi 90's here in northern VT and I rode 35 miles while scheleping between meetings.  By the time I arrived back home I was .... toast....fried chicken.... wilted spinach.  Wiped out & dragging my butt.  How do you guy's ride that close to the sun?

Slowly. And things are not nearly so bad when humidity is 5%. The wind--hot and dry--doesn't help. In 15 miles (admittedly with considerable climbing and sand) I drank 68 oz--after filling up before departure and filling up again upon return.

As Patrick said, I am back in Santa Fe.  I did a hard four hour dirt ride today to celebrate the summer solstice, climbing several thousand feet to over 10,000' ASL, out of water the last hour plus on the way back to the start.  It was pushing 100 in the sun I'd guess, well into the 90's for sure.

Yep it was hard but still it was just riding.  If I'd planned ahead I could have started earlier, planned my route and water tighter and those would have made it more pleasant, but it was still fun and I'm glad I did it.  In some ways perhaps the dry heat here is more manageable then the wetter heat back east.  35 miles in the 90's is a lot anywhere I'd say.

I am on list, much easier to ride in 90 degrees at low humidity, until you dessicate and your eyeballs fall out.  We also get 30 plus degree temp swings day to night due to the low humidity. So late evening and early AM are pretty pleasant almost always.

I am up for another NM ride as long as it is not a spring wind cluster.  I can host a LA ride sometime too.

I attended an esoteric academic conference at St John's in Santa Fe back in, I think, 2000, and loved the area. I've been scheming a Fall trip there for this year, but with the way my schedule is looking, it might be 2013.

Perhaps we should postpone any plans for a NM ride until the fall ....?

I grew up in Albuquerque, though now I live outside Boston. Was back there last summer for high school reunion and went on a ride with an old classmate. We'd planned on riding up to the Crest but the road was closed due to fire danger. Instead, we started down in the valley, north up to Paseo, then up Tramway across to the Tijeras Canyon. Rode out the canyon and then looped back to the valley ending at Sadie's for lunch. Almost exactly 50 miles under a blazing July sun. Haven't been that thirsty since I went back East for college. Best tasting Negro Modelo I think I've ever had after that ride.

I was born in Clayton, raised in Roswell, raised three children in Silver City and added one more to the pack in Albuquerque. I used to love riding around the central part of the state. Now I'm dealing with the heat of central Arizona. Same routine in the summer; start the ride early at 5:30 when the temp is around 80 and try to get home before it hits the century mark.

Nils: Please do get in touch. I'll have family out in mid July but
should have time for a ride.

More generally: the RBW NM Chapter is larger than I had imagined --
especially since I haven't seen any Rivendells except my own here --
tho', 10 years ago, did come across a retired gentleman riding a Heron
with M-bars, Heron then being, IIRC, part of Rivendell.

Perhaps we can think of a group ride in Santa Fe or ABQ or even LA or
LC once the weather cools off? Say in October? I will tickle my
calendar.

A S24 outing would be nice, too and Santa Fe would be good for that.

I mean: RBW listmemberts + iBobbers if there are members of the latter
that don't belong to the former.
