After seeing various Sam owners pictures here and there on various threads I thought I would start a thread dedicated to the versatile Sam's.

Perhaps such a thread already exists?

No worries if it does and perhaps someone could post a link if there is one out there.

Here is my Sam with upright bars.

I'm an older Riv owner , almost 74 and still love riding and working on bikes.

I managed just over 2700 miles in 2023 ( not all on the Sam)
and hope to top that in 2024 the Good Lord willing.

My bars are the  Sunlite North Road alloy version.
( They also have a steel version)
I like these North Roads so much I have them on multiple bikes

I have a very tall stem column , (forget the brand)
and a thread less stem, Origin8 I think.
I need the bars way up for the old back.
It works well for me and I've done up to 73 miles on it set up this way.

I have a triple crank (need the granny to get up hills).
 I'm using the more
modern Dia Compe thumb shifters,
Shimano derailers,
Tektro 559 brake calipers,
Velocity Dyad rims / Deore hubs wheelset and Soma Supple Vitesse EX tires in a 700x42.

I do recommend these tires as they are supple, seem to roll fast and smooth and are relatively light for a tire this size at 380g's. No flats in guessing 600 or so miles.

The tan saddle is an Origin8 Comfort in about the same width as a B17.
It works well for me. I like the look and it's only about $40.

I like working on bikes and built my Sam up myself.

Safe riding to all.

Count me in! the Sam has been my favourite bike to date overall. At this point it's an outlier in the current lineup with a pretty short wheelbase compared to similar models but I hope they just keep making it as-is, because it will never stop being perfect for what it is.  The only change I would make would be to add  under-DT bottle bosses for touring & randonneuring.

My Sam was on drop bars for most of its life but currently running Albatross, set up so that I feel quite relaxed and upright towards the ends of the bars but can slide forward to the 'hooks' for a little more of a road bike position. I'm extremely happy with this configuration overall:  I use it for commuting and errands, the longest and fastest rides that I participate in, as well as camping and touring a couple times per year. I ride it more than any other bike.  Current mileage on this bike is 10,244km over 4 years, 4 months. I hope to put many more on it!

Here’s mine.  I call it a “bog standard”, because I called Will in 2015, gave him my measurements, said “Send me a Sam’, and this is what arrived.  Albatross bars, bar ends, Tektro 559 brakes...

I do touring, so I added a rack for panniers, fenders, and switched the 2x9 to a 3 x 9 drive. I live ON the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia, so that’s where my Sam mostly goes.

I’ve put about 10,000 miles on it.  I re-build it every 5,000 miles - strip it down to the F/F/HS and rebuild - mostly because I really like to work on bikes but don’t want to muck this one up, it fits so well.  While I’ve had it, I’ve built up three other bikes, but the Sam abides - it gets far and away the most miles I ride.  I’ve actually gone through one chain, a set of brake pads, and four saddles on it (trying to find the “right one”).

I’ve also shipped it overseas to do an “Up the Danube River from Budapest to Vienna” ride, but the mental hassles (and shipping cost) mean that in the future I’ll rent a bike for overseas touring.
This Sam is going to do the GAP, though, before I have to quit riding.

Currently running with an Extra Small Saddle Sack purchased off this group, a Brooks Imperial saddle, and a Sigma bike computer - because I can download it into the Sigma software to record my rides.  Blackspire pedals.

The one that got away…
My first Riv, a 64, purchased after convincing myself I didn’t need a 68 Bombadil for another grand and change. I loved it, I broke it, and was devastated. Happily, I got to talk to Richard Schwinn about getting it fixed!, which was awesome. And so it came back to me, better than new, but I sold it for a song to a nice fella who uses it a lot.(btw, I’d buy it back in a heartbeat!🤑)

Look at that: another Sam in the BEST COLOR!!
Mine is a 2017-ish Caliper frame that, despite various accoutrement changes, has remained basically the same since built up.
-650b Fatty Rumpkin tires w/ a dynamo up front
-Orange and Blue color scheme
-Honey Brown Brooks B68
-Albatross Bars
-Wald basket
-Monarch pedals

Want to upgrade the brakes to some blue Paul racers.

Here's mine. 60cm First gen with shorter stays. Had a 62 first and just couldn't get comfortable on it. Tried drop bars, upright bars different stems. Always felt too big and ponderous. Did a swap for this early 60 and love it. By the way, I'm 6'-02" with a 93 PBH.

Always! 62cm Sam, saddle height ~80cm. Since building it up in 2020 I have moved from Albas to Toscos and gone back and forth between knobbies and slicks, but the build has largely stayed the same. If one day an Appaloosa or Atlantis came my way, then I'd move some of this build over and change to drops. Until then this bike is perfectly suited for almost all the camping/riding within reach from New Haven, CT. Face still hurts after most rides from all the smiling.

Chris, nice score on your cream SKS. Damn shame they gave up on those fenders. Don’t ask why, but I’m stuck on plastic fenders…all the way back to Raleigh Blue Streak and just can’t shake it 🤪

Really good looking bike IMHO.

Drivetrain - 2 x 9 with 170 Sugino XD2 triple crank with homemade bashguard on outer ring, 38 x 24 middle/inner rings & 11-34 cassette, shifted by Microshift thumbies,  Ultegra front and rear derailleurs Jagwire gold braided cable housing.

Cockpit - Bosco bars and Nitto 130mm faceplate quill stem, harlequin wrapped with orange and yellow Newbaums and a few coats of clear shellac. Paul Components orange Love Levers pulling Paul Motolite brakes, ESI silicone grips, Spurcycle limited-edition bell with orange striker.

Paul, I have a A.H. Homer for spirted mixed-surface riding. But I figured I would get a 2015 (new) Sam Hillborne  for my touring needs. It is a bit stouter and capable for riding fully loaded, sometimes on dirt. Confidence-building off road, mainly rail trails. I have it set up with a Nitto rear rack and a Rivendell HAR front rack. Two to four Ortlieb panniers and a Sugarloaf basket bag will take me for 5-day unsupported trips without worry..
I love this bike as a dedicated tourer but often pull the rear rack for local riding. I find the mustache bars with the 100mm stem allows for "stretching out" on longer days in the saddle.
I'm outfitted with 35mm tires because of the VO fenders, which I find very helpful for mid-Atlantic and mid-West multi-day touring. I'd love to try it on the C&O Towpath with wider rubber, but would miss the comfort that fenders give.
Here's my "Tuxedo Sam":

Here’s mine, I’ve had it for two years or so. 56cm double tt, got the frame in this group, had a friend add canti bosses at 650b, and had it painted at Bilenky cycles in Philly. My favorite bike aside from my cargo bike, and I have to constantly convince myself it’s not the only bike I need. Currently in “rando” mode, but I’ve mostly had it with a basket in front and R14 in the rear. Really can do pretty much everything, and so comfortably!

Two Sams from the late 2022 batch. East Coast Sam atop Connor Pass in Dingle, Ireland, and West Coast Sam above the Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA. I have a certain way I like my bikes set up :-)

Both bikes have Noodle Bars, Shimano CX50 brakes, Shimano Tiagra brake levers, Silver 170mm Cranks 42x28, Riv Clem Smith Pedals,  11-32 cassettes, Shimano 9sp bar end shifters, YBB chains, Nitto S65 seat posts, Velo saddle (either Dimension Afton or Soma Ensho, they're the same thing, just different labels), King Iris Cages, and Nitto F-15 handlebar rack. Derailers are Shimano rear, Microshift front. East Coast Sam rides on Velocity Atlas/Shimano wheels wearing Ultradynamico Cava JFF 650x48B tires, has a SimWorks Gettin Hungry stem (made by Nitto), and doesn't have lights, yet. West Coast Sam rides on SON/WhiteInd/Velocity Quill wheels wearing Panaracer Gravel King slick 650x48B tires, has a Riv lugged stem, and has Edelux lights. Saddle height 695mm, stem 80mm.

This Riv came to me as an unforeseen windfall. I had only just learned about Rivendell from the Path Less Pedaled youtube channel. Suddenly a friend pops up saying she had worked at Rivendell and received this bike as an employee perk, but it was gathering dust and wanted to know if I wanted it for gratis.

I had it tuned up and fitted with complementary pink cable housing and yellow newbaums bar wrap and fitted a wald front basket. I had no expectations for it, but the ride-feel is smooth and springy. It's primary use-case is take-out getter around San Francisco and weekend cafe rides and I love it dearly for that purpose.

Enjoying this thread.

Curious about the conti race kings. Those are 2.0s and they fit? Or am I missing something?

I've used Cazadero 50s and they cleared, but I didn't like them enough and missed fenders. I'm always curious about other tires in that range though.

I'll put a pic up eventually, but mine has RH hurricane ridge/Snoqualmie pass, VO zeppelin fenders and the widest towel racks. I'm enjoying that combo. I just added a nitto 34f and am not minding it, but haven't tried really loading it down yet.

It is fun to see the variety of builds on the Sam's.

It looks like the majority have some type of upright / swept back style handlebars
although of course the Sam is so versatile to accommodate a road bar if preferred .

If recalling correctly I saw orange, silver, light blue , green, black and a yellow perhaps mustard like color Sam. (Not sure what Riv called it)

Cool stuff.

I'm enjoying the thread.

I already own one  - a pumpkin orange from 2017. If they offer the new one in the black they once sold, I'm in for another! I'll set it up as my "fast" Sam - no racks, light wheels and tires, etc. That is far and away my favorite of all the Riv colors I've seen, across the fleet.

Strangely similar to Brian, I have a 2TT 56cm Sam Hillborne with posts brazed on for 650b. The original idea was the ability to run 2 wheelsets (27.5x2.1" bikepacking tires, 700c road tires), but I went back to 700c after getting a proper bikepacking bike (Crust Evasion). I don't really see myself going back to 650b any time soon, although every once in a while I'll have a fever dream about doing so. Paul Motolites allow for the two wheel sizes.

I snapped a boring bike-against-a-wall photo of the current Rando Mode build this weekend outside the Bike Expo's valet. Getting the bike ready for this weekend's PA Rando 200K, and the beginning of this year's SR series. I've also attached a Bikepacking Mode photo from 2019 or so running Schwalbe Thunderburts.

Hey all, meant to slap a pic of my Hillborne up here. After wrecking (gently) in a ditch last summer and horrifically bending the derailer hanger it no longer will mount a Cyclone. So it's currently sporting a mid-2000s XT long cage. Also I've since lowered the bars, swapped the saddle for a Brooks Pro and removed the kickstand. Guess I should get a new picture.

Been a long while since I've posted here...I'm getting back to biking more these days, and enjoying reading about these wonderful bikes, esp. those of the newcomers to the Riv family.

The Sam is my favorite Riv.  The ol' 58 with albatross bars in the last pic used to be mine until my wife decided she needed it.  So I got another 58, set it up with a noodle bar and really enjoyed it.  For various reasons I sold my 58 and dabbled with a several other Riv models for a while.  They were fun, too!

But I missed that Sam.

Late in 2019 Riv had a great deal on a batch of older Sams, so a 62 dbl top tube f/f/hs found its way into my garage, and I built it up.  Still have it and recently began to enjoy it greatly as a relaxed run-a-bout.

But I still miss that 58 with noodle bar.  If anyone has one (or a 57 Roadini) please let me know.  Thanks!

Howdy! I'm very excited to snag a Sam next Wednesday; I'll move over my Crust Romanceur bits: albatross, Paul Canti, White Ind. cranks etc. I'm so torn on the colors!! Fun bright periwinkle with more subdued accents or classic green with brown accents. INPUT??

Howdy gang,

After an unsuccessful attempt at finding a 58 Mustard Homer…I take delivery of this size 57, new to me, Sam today! I am pumped, and it should be an excellent canvas as a HiHo Silver specimen.

I wanted to take a moment in light of recent scammy trends and briefly introduce myself. Happy to answer any follow up questions as well.

I returned to bikes following a nominal investment in the bike infrastructure by Oklahoma City leadership.  But the investment did at least provide a system of trails and paved pathways that allows for a good amount of riding off of the roadway.

Unfortunately, I have had close friends struck and killed by vehicles on bikes and motorcycles.  The environment has to be nearly perfect for me to feel even remotely comfortable touring on roads exclusively.  The level of trust road cyclists have in the drivers passing by has always fascinated me.  Driving is one of the most dangerous activities we can engage in.  Anyhow enough of that.

I began with Surly bikes, then quickly to Crust bikes, and finally…thanks to Blue Lug photography inspiration, a 58 Homer.

The Homer is currently my favorite Riv.  I have owned an orange Ram that was slightly too tall and an Atlantis 2 that could have worked but required some significant frame repair.  Sold both bikes to Jarrod Bunk, an incredible person and former owner of Hope Cyclery.

James knocked out the Homer build and Rich built a White/dynamo Quill wheelset. The bike fit like a tailored suit.  My build was loosely modeled after the interpretation of James Homer prior to his latest Staff bike mods.

Why did I sell it?  Possibly the very cool buyer, maybe an attempt to cull bikes that couldn’t perform as well in NWA dirt touring (what was I thinking?), impulse, maybe some guilt in owning more bikes than my Wife (my best bud).  I do regret selling it.  But always forward.

I traded a Crust Bombora for the Sam that I realized very quickly I was attempting to make more comfortable and upright like my Homer. I acknowledged this and happily traded.  Hence the remaining ENVE wheels and White crankset I posted on the group recently.

Let’s see, I have more than a few kiddos, three of the kids now ride also which is such a joy and I also train BJJ, weight lift/run.

Some questions…

The cockpit worked well for me, with an 80mm lugged stem and 90 reach Crust Shaka bar.

I have received some helpful feedback already regarding this Sam.  I would like to have a similar cockpit, if not the same with a Noodle or Shaka bar. Do I need a shorter stem?

I have a new 85mm 90-190 stem.  I wouldn’t mind running the Shaka again.  Or snag a 70/80 stem to try the Noodle?

Either way, I hope to buy a longer lugged stem from Jim and pick up an Albatross down the road.  I certainly hope to try that one day.

Anyone have any feedback on the H SON PLUS wheelset?  No experience beyond Velocity and Crust wheels.  Also my first experience with Campy.

Will also be switching the saddle, seatpost, pedals, adding Moon Units, cages, and cable cherries.

Photos of my previous Homer, and the Sam as it will arrive (hopefully)…

Hope everyone is having a great week so far.

Hey Brian,

One vote for the more classic green with brown accents…

Now, if the Romanceur is gone, and you decide to sell the Roadini…I would do Periwinkle.

If the Roadini and the rest of your stable stays, I think you will love the green and it would complement the others well.

Howdy! I'm very excited to snag a Sam next Wednesday; I'll move over my Crust Romanceur bits: albatross, Paul Canti, White Ind. cranks etc. I'm so torn on the colors!! Fun bright periwinkle with more subdued accents or classic green with brown accents. INPUT??

I finally got around to snapping a photo of my 56cm 2TT Sam that I snagged from Abe here on the group. Exploring some of the unfinished Beltline here in Atlanta.

Highlights include a Paul Racers/levers/moon units, a Son Edelux & Dynamo wheel from Rich, Rene Herse 44cm Manastash Ridge , Marks/Campee Nitto racks, Deore XT Rapid Rise, Silver Shifters and Lots of Blue Lug adornments(Frame pad, safety triangle, chain guard). Also, some bags I already had(and match stupidly well) from The Spindle here in ATL. The Saddle is a Green B17 Special, though it looks black here.

Absolutely loving this bike, and really happy to have found the biggest straight top tube frame I can stand over(834mm).

I would love to have both a fenderless Sam set up with RH knobbies (or similar) and a fendered, rando-type build like mine. It's that good of a bike that I want two :D

Mine, yesterday on a 100km chill pace, many stops ride with a few friends

my guy after an extremely long over due wash.

i recently put together a bob jackson audax, trying to scratch the itch of a rambouillet like frame. i hated it almost immediately and it made me appreciate my Sam that much more.

Obviously missing a chain, missing a Campee rear rack as well.

Michael,
I don't think I ever saw a red Hillborne. Quite stunning. A custom color or maybe the red which was used on a select few Atlanti?
I have a good friend who owns a couple of Bob Jacksons and a couple of Rivendells. So, that will be a question (his preference between them) I will have to pose to him.

Thanks Paul - the red is a custom color. I wanted something as similar to 'Rad Red' that Richard Sachs was using a few years ago. There was supposed to be a hint of pink that didn't really come through, but i'm happy with it nonetheless.

It was the result of buying a blem frame from Rivendell and deciding I was going to make it my own. I think it started it's life as an orange bike originally.

I see the Sachs with a hint of pink, spot on.

These are all the same frame over so many years:

Andrew: nice. Pray, what is the little orange globular cable end -- I guess I really mean, how is it designed and how does it clamp to the cable -- and where do you get them?

And, what is the saddle? Brooks Swift? Or trimmed Pro? Or another marque?

Patrick Moore, ruthlessly bottom-trimming and wondering what to do with the very, very nice -- thick leather! -- as-new B17N that he got recently for ~$47 + shipping.

Patrick,

Thank you!

Those little contraptions are actually called “Cable Cherries.”  They are easily installed and tightened via a 1.5 mm hex.  They are quite fun, come in some great colors and are available from Forager Cycles, and Paul, among others.  See below for the description from Forager…

“The Cable Cherries are durable, reusable cable ends with a huge grip - no more crimps wiggling off leaving a frayed, pokey end! The easy-to-grab sphere shape makes adjusting cable tension or swapping components simple. Tape the included 1.5mm hex key to your tire lever, and you’re set!

Easily grab the sphere to snug up your cable tension. Take them on and off as much as you need with the included 1.5mm hex key & set screw. The Cable Cherries are CNC machined in Oakland, CA on the same equipment that makes surgical pins & screws. Get 'em tight, and have 'em for life.”

The saddle is a Berthoud Galibier.  A bit more narrow (and Ti rails) than their normal offerings.

Hope this is helpful.

Best,

Drew
