How come I rarely ever see Saluki's up on the chopping block? Did Riv only make a small batch?

I'd love a 56cm perhaps it's a pipe dream?

Hugh, I'm not sure how much difference there is between the 56cm 650b hilsen and a 56cm saluki.  I was under the impression the geometry was the same and that the 650b hilsen's are just kind of rebadged salukis.

Hugh, I've wondered the same thing.  I'd be interested in a 60cm or 61cm Saluki---I can't remember if they come in odd or even sizes---but haven't seen one become available since I started watching.  I have a 700c Hilsen and love it, and would like to try a 650b Saluki that would let me put even fatter tires on it.  I agree with Sky that the Hilsen and Saluki are identical if they're both 650b, but in my size the wheel sizes differ.

I recall a post from a few months ago in which someone described a NOS frame they'd bought from Rivendell that wasn't labeled, and Riv told her that it was a Saluki or Hilsen, take your pick because they're the same.  If that came from Riv than it's proof enough to me that the models are the same.

Salukis were originally available/built in sizes 47cm to 62cm, starting in 2005.

When Rivendell wanted to make a bike with similar geometry and qualities (room for bigger tires and fenders, etc.), but in larger sizes, the A. Homer Hilsen was born.

Because bikes bigger than 62cm with 650B wheels didn't seem like a good idea, the A. Homer Hilsen was first offered as "the 700c version of the Saluki."

When Rivendell realized that having two bikes that were, for all intents & purposes, "the same," the Saluki name was retired, and all existing (and future) frames became A. Homer Hilsens.

John, something I've wondered about lately, and just realized that you're a perfect person to ask:

What's the difference between the Saluki and the Bleriot?  I know the Bleriot is Taiwan-built, but from everything I've read I'd expect the capabilities and ride qualities of these 2 models to be very similar, if not identical.  Are there differences I'm overlooking or unaware of, such as differences in the tubists that translate to differences in the bikes' qualities?  Thanks.

Hi sky,

The differences between the 56cm Salulki and 56cm Hilsen are purely aesthetic for me. I like the head badge better and I know it's a quibbly point but I prefer canti posts vs caliper brakes. I realize I could have had all this done on my Hilsen but I felt it was a tad too large for me and felt it was easier to sell and consider a different path. James, I think this answers your question. It was a 58cm (650b).

John, thanks for the inside scoop. So yeah the Saluki had a brief span before the Hilsen badging took over which answers my question about why so few pop up.

Dear Dave,

I'm a little rusty of the Bleriot specs. It was a very limited offering, done in conjunction with QBP, and yes, made in Taiwan.

Riv originally intended the decals/HB/name for another model, but when the QBP thing came together, it was decided to use them for the Bleriot.

Jon Grant, who also did the Saluki artwork (and, coincidentally, Rivelo's logo), designed the Bleriot decals and head badge.

All I can remember today....

Saluki has nice Japanese tubing, HT TT and DT, and yes double taper stays. Made in Japan. Hilsen is made of different tubing and made in WI. Bleriot is made of Taiwanese tubing, in Taiwan and the lugs and details while nice are not as nice as Saluki/Hilsen. The idea was to make a great country bike at a lower price point. Analogous to the more recent Sam Hillbornes. The QBP thing went astray when the frames started showing up for cheap on Ebay. People who have Bleriots seem to like them. I sold my Saluki because I wasn't doing country style riding much and someone else might like to have it instead. It was a nice bike though.

Why not consider a Roadeo?

They can do everything a Saluki can now that you can get braze ons wherever you want them, plus they will be a snappier ride/lighter tubeset.

I guess only restriction is tire size the Saluki probably has the Roadeo beat. But other than that the Roadeo should be the more exhilerating ride, in theory.

Only "probably"?  Per https://www.rivbike.com/products/roadeo  "FOR SURE: The Jack Brown, which is NOMINALLY 33.333mm wide on most rims--but that's irrelevant, remember?--measures about 700mm on a 24mm rim. It's the fattest unfendered tire we can categorically commit to fitting the ROADEO fork. If you want fenders also, best limit the tire to 682mm height...which will be about a 28."   I ran 650Bx42mm Grand Bois Hetres with fenders on my Saluki.  That is a huge difference, lum gim.

Bigger than huge.  Monstro Gigantor.  Let's compare a Range Rover with an Aston Martin, why don't we.   I can see plenty of reasons why you might want to have both, but I can't see any reason to think the two would really be interchangeable.

No.  This was entirely on pavement, even the part down the farm road in the Amish area, but even disregarding pavement fenders like this do a great job keeping the bike clean.  And that's especially important if you're riding in area where there are many horse drawn vehicles like the one where these photos were taken, in Maryland's St Marys County.  These photos were all taken on the same ride (indeed, on the same road) as the one featuring the Saluki.

Yes indeed, those tires are very comfortable.  And in rural areas, high pressure narrow racing tires just don't get on all that pleasantly with farm roads, which are generally paved with coarse materials like chipseal, but also the iron shod horses' hooves and the steel tires on the the buggy wheels really tear up the pavement.

The bike below is now owned by list member Tony DeFilippo, who also lives in Alexandria VA.

Ray,
You are correct about the Saluki's having double-tapered seat stays.  The Bleriot's have single-tapered seat stays.  Below is a link to the Cyclofiend site with the Bleriot announcement pages from the Rivendell Reader #37 (2006).  A nice quick read.

As I've been digging in the depths of the riv catalog, it seems like the Saluki (canti) is the perfect bike for me. I'm not anti-swept back bars (they have their place), but I'd like a fast country bike optimized for drop bars, able to support a balanced load and maybe do an S24O.

Sadly, it seems like the Saluki is basically impossible to find... should I start looking for a different frame? Crust Romanceur, Lightning Bolt--something like that? Those seem to have much less class to me though.

Thoughts?

The Bleriot was the alt-distribution Saluki.Same geometry.

The Saluki was the 650B Hilsen V1 (before the current elongated chainstay model), and then was incorporated into the sizing range under the Hilsen name.

I don't remember seeing as many of the Canti-Salukis....

Make sure you find old geometry charts and double-check your sizing, should you come across a used Saluki.
I normally ride 54cm - 56cm frame sizes, and as best I can tell, I think I would probably need a 57cm-ish size in some of the older discontinued models like the Saluki and Bleriot.

I hopped on a 54cm Saluki at a Riv meet-up, and it was definitely too small for my 83 PBH. My current Sam and Toyo Atlantis are 54cm and 54.5cm, respectively.

For those interested, on the Paceline board, there's a guy looking to sell a couple of beautiful bikes for his friend's dad who is not doing well. One was a very nice red Saluki and the other a Prestige Peugeot.  The Saluki looks like its in beautiful condition with the right "bob" components - Riv/Nitto lugged stem, Sugino triple crank, bar-end shifters and canti brakes.  A price range that people generally think the Saluki should go for is around $1800-2000 complete.

Peugeot was given a much lower price likes $200-300?  One thing about the Peugeot is people where saying the Prestige Peugeot has the red label Reynolds 531SL decal.  However, from the photos its not clear the decal is red. Although the one Reynolds fork decal does look kind of red, but its well worned.  If it does, then it is a rarer Peugeot and will probably command more money.

Anyone interested should go here:

Note, you need to be a member of the Paceline forum, so sign up if you're interested in either bikes.

There may be few who can answer this: has anyone ridden both a saluki and Homer?

Are there noticeable differences? Different tubing? I’ve read they are essentially the same geometry.

I’m tempted on the one Tim posted which I think would fit perfectly for me. But I’d have to give up my Toyo Homer, which, by the way, has been nothing short of excellent. Should I subdue my curiosity and be content with AHH? I really wish it had canti posts like the saluki. Would love to throw some Paul mini motos or motolites on there.

I’ve been extremely lucky to own both versions of the saluki and they have been my favorite bikes hands down (followed by my ‘85 specialized expedition and bridgestone rb-t/xo-1/mb-1). i’d say the canti version Saluki is a perfect “all-rounder” if you don’t need a ton of gear for a weekender or S24O. the side pull version same, but it all depends on your personal preferences. i cant imagine there’s enough difference between non-canti homer and saluki to justify switching one for the other, but if you are more into cantis, get the Saluki and you’ll never look back. it’s my favorite Riv of all time and holds value very well since it’s a bit of an odd duck.

I believe that my Homer was intended to emulate a Saluki, by converting it to cantilever and 650b. I think there are comparisons if you do some searching/digging. I don't go back all that far, but I'm remembering that the older Homer and the Saluki are extremely similar.

I remember starting this thread, my research determined that in the beginning both the Saluki and Homer were identical geometrically. The principle difference between the two the Saluki center pull brakes and the Homer's side pulls. Iirc, it was Grant getting Tektro to produce the large 557 brakes to accommodate larger tire widths.

Caveat: This is from memory, I have not redone any digging, research in the archives to confirm any of this. I might even have miss labeled the brake nomenclature.

I inevitably, sold my 2012 57cm A.A.H 650b, which I felt was slightly large for me, though it was based on Rivendell sizing. I do miss it's sprightliness.  I eventually settled on a 2018 Atlantis, which met all my criteria, if not for the fact it's a bit more stout. The difficulty in finding a canti Saluki was just so difficult and potentially expensive due to their rarity it had me pivot.

I'm hoping the gentleman looking for one, finds this rare bird.

Best Regards,

~Hugh

I've had my canti saluki since about 2008(+/-) and I think it is about the "perfect" Rivendell. It is just beefy enough to do a week long tour (packing lightly with two panniers) and is just as capable of making me smile when it's unloaded.  My friend had an early edition AHH and we swapped during a couple of rides - to me they rode almost exactly the same, except his had side pulls so his tire selection was a bit more narrow.

I’d do shameful, disgusting things to own that bike, Gary.

Congrats!

I was getting ready to reply, and then saw that this is a very old thread, and that I did chime in — back in 2017. I said:

(Updated: No longer at Rivelo. Back at Rivendell. Sold my 20 year-old Saluki a couple of years ago. Now, I ride a Clem and a Wolbis, and while I still have my 2000 Atlantis,
I don’t use it much these days.)

Back a Rivendell?   Great news!  Best wishes for you there.  Saluki is a fine bike. I had a 50 cm canti for a while.

Does anyone else wish they'd kept the Saluki name and just evolved it from the original concept to what has now become the AHH? The Atlantis had a similar design trajectory with respect to wheel sizes so I'm not totally sure why they decided to retire the Saluki name, but I much prefer that and the accompanying head badge/decals/etymology to the AHH thing. Am I alone in this? Seems it would have been simple to just be like "same bike, now with 700c wheels for the bigger sizes" and then have iterated from there.

It would be cool if they did a special "Saluki edition" run at some point with the old decals-n-head badge, an exclusive color way, and maybe even canti posts, or center-pulls as standard for a complete build). I have a feeling it'd be hit, though what do I know?

Perhaps I just like dogs too much, but am I the only one who compares their bike to a dog (trusty companion, dependable, and always up for adventure)?..I am strongly biased towards the animal-derived model names in general, as opposed to the silly-sounding human names they've used, so maybe I just don't get it.

Joe,

100% agree with everything you said. I would have much preferred the Saluki name and badge. As a matter of fact take my money now for a new Saluki canti 650b frame.

Haha yes, Hugh! I'd throw down on that petition as well. Who knows, maybe in 2030: the year of the Metal Dog. I can't imagine a more fitting time to unveil something like this...other than NOW, of course!

“When Rivendell realized that having two bikes that were, for all intents & purposes, "the same," the Saluki name was retired, and all existing (and future) frames became A. Homer Hilsens. ”

I LOVE the ride of my AHH and was always curious why the Saluki had almost a cult-like appeal and the the AHH didn’t, especially since it’s basically the same bike, and rides beautifully, sprightly!

I must admit, though, the Saluki name is so much better.

Hoping I’ll always be able to swing my leg over my AHH,

I also support the critter names rather than the Anglo human names with the beautiful head badges as a bonus though the Susie does have that mighty slug

Love the Saluki and name and agree on the animal names. Love my Appaloosa but I have never called it a “Joe” Appaloosa and have even considered covering the “Joe” decal with something else

If a bike has a given name, we should get to do the christening.

As someone who has never really been fond of "nicknaming" my bikes, I have come to appreciate the proper human names Rivendell has given many of their models. My wife always asks me what I'm going to call my bikes whenever I get new ones, and I just throw my hands up because I've never really cared to give that sort of thing much thought. She has always nicknamed her bikes, and gets a kick out of it (her current Buena Vista is "Stevie" as in Stevie Nicks). Now, it's easy for me to have that decision baked into the model. I can just say, "I'm taking Gus for a spin", or "I think I might ride Sam on this next camping trip".

Hi Valerie, this is my second Ostrich S-2 bag with Nitto (Ocean Air Cycles) Erlen saddle rack.
Blue Lug has the only Erlen stock currently.
The rack stacks on the saddle rails with new bolt(s), the bag has a bottom pocket that the Erlen rack wears like a glove.

Hi Brian,

When I had my old road bike, I called her Rhiannon after my love of the Fleetwood Mac song.

My current bike, a Clem I really don't necessarily have a name for it other than Clem Kadiddlehopper from a character played by Red Skeleton.

Joe,
I like how you're thinking. The continuity is helpful for those trying to track down models.
As far as animal-based names go, I think you're onto something. The bike is a companion, not another person. I feel that the synergistic relationship between rider and bike is better represented in that way.
