hi, all.

there is a family of stems referred to as the "dirt drop", usually designated with MT-10 or MT-10DX (i think the DX indicates a duller silver finish vs a shinier silver finish).

there is a separate family of stems referred to as the "periscopa", sometimes designated with FU-82 or FU-82DX.

both famililes are "forged aluminum", according to the nitto catalog. assuming i found a stem amongst them that seemed an appropriate size and shape, why would i choose one family over the other? is there some particular non-size non-money reason to avoid a periscopa? (in my experience periscopa stems are cheaper, but not in a "lugged nitto vs soma shotwell" way.)

I’ve never used the Periscopa, but the Dirt Drop was OEM on the MB-1 and designed for mountain bike use, I think. It’s stout.

More than that, it also gets the bar higher than any other Riv-offered stem (at least, the 10 cm model does) with its 190 mm quill and upjutter extension. I used a 10 cm to get Nitto Noodles up nice and high and comfortable on a 48 cm (c-c) mountain bike with level tt and very low stack; there was IIRC 3-4 inches of usable quill remaining in the steerer. I take a 60 c-c road frame in “fistful of post” sizing.

Lastly, I think it looks better than a gooseneck with 12” of quill exposed.

And even more lastly, it’s very well made and quite pretty.

From the Riv web page:
For maximum bar height and comfort, and especially if your bike is just too damn small for you, this should solve your discomfort problem. Originally designed to make drop bars work on too-small, too-longa-top tube mountain bikes, and was original equipment on the 1987 Bridgestone MB-1.

Our top choice for Albastache or Moustache Handlebars, since they work best with a tall and short stem.
In 80 or 100mm extensions, both with a 22.2 quill.

The quill length is 190mm

Approximate Dirt Drop rise from min insertion to center of hbar clamp are as follows:

8cm - 168mm rise
10cm - 178mm rise

I've used both and as Patrick inferred the Periscopa probably wasn't designed for singletrack use. If it's for a mellower ride it will be fine.

Yeah, like Patrick and Joe said, it's about intended use. I bet the DD passes a certain mtb safety test and the Periscopa does not. I think the DD is cold forged and heat treated, the Perisacopa wouldn't be.

thanks all!

this consists with my unreliable barely-formed recollections.

my riding definitely qualifies as mellow. it’s not so much pavement, but all trail i’m on is likely maintained with an eye towards octogenerians and their elders. so i think i’ll get the right-sized stem that happens to be available now and not worry about the dirt drop vs periscopa dilemma.

which means for me the 260mm quill 8cm extension periscopa. geometrically it should top the 280mm 7-shaped stems as well as the 225mm quill 10cm extension dirt drop (assuming the periscopa does not have a big minimum insertion difference). and it’ll keep the bar desirably close.

if it snaps in two and punches a hole through my brain whilst riding to trader joe’s here in li’l ol’ suburbia-land i’ll be surprised as well as dead. note to self: do not carry six-pack of mercury in sackville barsack using periscopa cockpit.

who due to "n+1 cockpit disorder” is still on the lookout for a 10cm dirt drop with a 26.0mm bar clamp and a 225mm quill
