I don’t have a parts bin because I don’t like extra things taking up space that are not in use. Therefore, these things must go.

1. Surly 24 pack rack. A poor man’s Nitto Basket Rack, I think. Rated for load up to 30 lbs. There has been a recall on this rack, so ask your LBS to get you the parts Surly made to fix the issue. Parts are free. Comes with all the bolts, struts and instructions.  $150, new, yours for $95, shipped.

2. Brooks B17, Special. Try as I might, I have not been able to break this saddle in. I have a B17 Select, fits me just great, but this one? 900 miles and I still haven’t conquered it. Has copper plated rails that show a minimal amount of wear from being clamped onto my seat post. Lovely copper rivets set off by ebony leather. Retails for $170, yours for $130, shipped.

PM me if interested.
Thanks,
Leah

I'm kind of surprised that Leah would even attempt to use something like a Brooks (Champion) Special saddle when she seems to prefer an upright riding position such as some of the current Riv models she favors support.  I currently use such a saddle on one of my road bikes, but I like it because I ride with road bars and my body is more or less at a 45 degree angle with respect to the frame/bars.  Currently, I myself am attempting to "break in" a Brooks B-17 "narrow" and after 300-400 miles it's still not comfortable.  But such is life with road bars and saddles.

George,

The same saddle in Select (a B17 with organic, undyed leather and copper rivets) seems to work fine - I don’t now why this Special is so troublesome. Would I prefer a wider Brooks?

Youbetcha.

But Brooks DC’d the wider B68 so it’s this or the stupid sprung B67. Heavy, creaky, and apparently useless to me since I don’t make the 175 lb weight requirement to activate the springs. Also, no copper rivets! Where are the redeeming qualities?

Leah - ever tried the Brooks B-17 "S" (standard)?  This is a much shorter version of the regular B-17 or any of its variants.  If you're interested in trying it I can send you one that I have in my parts boxes, no strings attached.

That’s kind, George, but I think what would help me is a wider saddle. Hope you can find a use for your S saddle. Thanks anyway!

I think what can work as a 'very upright' Brooks is mostly down to each person's anatomy, and somewhat which particular example of leather your saddle happened to come with. I also ride quite upright due to hand issues and find most B17s perfect for this, OTOH I have one new B17 Standard on my Brompton that seems determined to kill me. OTO-OTHER-H the B67/68 shape Leah's using to some success has never worked for me at all.

i use a wider brooks without springs on my brompton
and it works great
i think a friend has the same seat with springs she doesnt need
so if either of you or anyone else wants it
i will arbitrage a deal

The B17 'S' is a wider saddle, depending on how you look at it.  The 'S' stands for short; it has that longer nose of the standard saddle chopped off so that the rider sits mostly on the wide part.  Here's a link:  https://www.brooksengland.com/en_us/saddles/b17-short.html  But it's up to you.

You can still buy brand new B-68 and B-68S on eBay. I have bought several in the past year, including the aged models with the pre-punched holes along the bottom edge – from 90 to 150 for new, less for used. Just put a permanent search with notification in and wait. You will just need to be faster in responding than I am. You will get a lot of false hits for a Baseball Card.

Hi Leah,

I also like the Brooks B-17 Champion and Select, but if you want something wider you should look into the Berthoud Mente.  It's a bit wider than the B-17 and flatter on top, the latter being a difference that might work for you or against you; you'd have to try it to see.  I use the Mente on tours and love it for that purpose.
