I've had some trouble finding a frame pump for my new 64 cm Sam
Hillborne. I ordered an HPX 4, thinking it was sure to fit with the
enormous tube lengths on there, but it's actually too big to fit with
the pump peg, and too small to fit snugly under the lower top tube.

I'd really like to use the HPX as my frame pump, and I'm wondering if
the best option is to just strap the 4 on the lower tube with some
sort of velcro attachment? Anybody know what would be best to use if
that's the answer? Also, does anybody have a smaller HPX that works
with the pump peg, or any other good frame pump for that matter?

Thanks.

Zefal used to make a black plastic clamp-on pump peg for this type of situation. Or you can track down an old chrome-plated Campy clamp-on peg.

Do you mean your pump isn't long enough to fit under the top...or is
the bottom top tube longer? What are the lengths of the two tubes?
I've got a boatload of pumps that should work on one of them.

The uppermost top tube has a pump peg that is set far in from the end
of the tube, so the gap is too small.

The lower top tube has no pump peg and the regular tube is too long
for the pump to fit.

I will get the clearance measurements when I get a chance.

Park makes a frame pump short enough and adjustable to fit several different lengths. It is nice having it around instead of keeping the multiple sizes around. Now finding the xl frame pump for my 68cm Quickbeam has been a challenge.

The Campagnolo ones look very nice.

Five weeks later,I stumbled upon the answer my question! I was reading
the packaging the HPX 4 came in and notice that the HP setting is for
pumping and the mysterious "X" setting is for mounting. When placed in
X-mode, this pump fits PERFECTLY [underneath the topmost tube & on
pump peg] on my 2011-made 64cm Sam, in case anyone else is looking for
a frame pump now, or stumbling through the archives at some point...

Also worth noting that new Zefal "Classic" HPX pumps with polished
aluminum bodies are gorgeous and work just like the older models.

Any thoughts on whether the HPX-4 would work equally well on a 60cm Sam Hillborne? Effective top tube is 3cm shorter than the 64's, which I think means the actual top tube is slightly more than 3cm shorter.

Thomas,

Did you ever get an answer to your question regarding the HPX-4 fitting on a 60cm Sam Hillborne? I'm waiting on a 61cm Sam Hillborne and am interested in that pump but still not sure if it will fit on the pump peg.

Thanks in advance for any info.

You might get an answer but that was 4-1/2 years ago.  The kids call that necro-posting when you raise an old thread from the dead. :-)

No worries. I called Rivendell earlier and they first corrected me and said that I'm getting the 62 inch Sam Hillborne and that the HPX-4 should fit on that bikes pump peg with no issues.

One of them fits just fine on a 60 cm MAP, a 60 cm Saluki, a 60 cm Rambouillet, a 59 cm Spectrum, a 59 cm VO Randonneur and a 61.6 Kogswell P/R, so why would a 60 cm Sam Hillborne be any different?

Daniel, here's my 62 cm Sam, with HPX-4 on it no problem.

I have had nothing but fun on this bike. Right now, it has Soma Cazadero tires, which might be perfect on it.

Is that a tweed Smythe Big Loafer? Excellent?

Yes! Lucky me.
Sometimes I'll put the Little Loafer front too!

James,

Thanks for the info and nice bike! I like that rear bag. It looks similar to the MTX Trunk Bag EX I have on my Giant OCR. I ordered the small gray Sackville SaddleSack bag for the new bike. I think that bag will do well for most of my biking but will most likely get the medium bag before "Les the Enabler" and I bike the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage trail next spring.
