As this isn't a Riv if its inappropriate for the group please remove.  I just figured it is in the spirit of a Riv and perhaps someone here would be interested.  My wife wants a long tail to transport our kids so this has to go.  Its a beaut.

For sale is a beautiful and unique take on a 1930's path racer. Pashley had Reynolds reissue their 531 tubing just for this frame. Details are amazing and this bike is sure to turn heads. Only upgrade from stock are the Brooks ring grips. Even has a titanium railed Brooks saddle!

Size is 22.5 or the listed large.

Full specs here: http://www.pashley.co.uk/bikes/bicycles/guv-nor.php

Colour: Buckingham Black.
Gears: Sturmey Archer XRD single speed
Frame: Traditional lugged and brazed construction with authentic 1930s geometry. Scalloped lugs and Reynolds 531 butted tubes. Individually hand-built
Fork: Tubular crown, hand-brazed.
Saddle: Antique brown Brooks B17 natural leather saddle with titanium chassis.
Handlebar: North Road drop bar on a forged alloy quill stem.
Brakes: Sturmey Archer all-weather, low maintenance front and rear hub brakes.
Wheels: 28" gold lined black alloy Westwood rims (26" for the 20" frame) with stainless steel spokes.
Tyres: 28x1 1/2" Cream Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres (26 x 1 3/8" tyre size for the 20" frame) with Kevlar Guard belt puncture protection and reflective side walls.
Mudguards None supplied.
Pedals: MKS Sylvan Stream.
Crankset: Sugino XD2 (46T, 170mm) with guard.
Other Features: Micro-adjust alloy seatpost, brass bell

FYI: Bike is located in Chicago.  If anyone in the lower Wisco, NW IN, or SW MI wants to meet up we can discuss.

Man, that would look nice with that AM hub that I've been hoarding for a few years. Too bad that it already has wheels ... (or rather, good thing, for my budget).

How does it ride, with that 1930s geometry, compared to a modern road bike -- let's illustrate "modern" by a Roadeo, a Roadini, a Bleriot, a pre 1990 Trek, a nice UJB, or something like that.

I'll bet those 28" tires are plush.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Guv'nors, including why everyone buys the wrong size. Great bike, I'd love to have one but I know I'd never ride a singlespeed around here.

It's really smooth. Not a quick accelerating bike but it gets. Those big rims and tires are very plush. And roller brakes are great. I always have a conversation with a random stranger when I take it out.

Ugh... why did you have to post this dream bike of mine and in my size, too. I almost built a knock-off a few years ago and had a guy lined up to bend the forks for me. Never completed the project. I had those same delta cruisers on a Robin Hood and they were nice, but I’m just as happy with my Rolly Pollys!

What a beautiful and unique bike!  And a good deal, too, I imagine.  Good thing it's too big for me and I don't ride single-speed.  Best of luck selling,
Steve

In a weak moment earlier this year I bought a 22.5 Guv'nor 3 speed. I have always loved the look of the bike. I bought a frame that was "too big" as recommended by the Stuff Dave Likes article. I am lacing a 90mm (vs stock 70mm) SA drum brake with integral dynohub to the front rim. Amazingly, the right fork leg is sent up for internal wiring with a larger than normal hole in the bottom and a plug/grommet in the fork crown. I also installed a seatpost  mounted shifter for the three speed to clean up the handlebars and downtube.

Now is your chance to live your dreams, Doug!

I have seen many copies of the Guv over the years.  Down to taking an old Raleigh with 531 tubing and building it almost to spec.  It is also why I wanted one as well.  The 531 tubing is amazing, it has a great set of "modern" parts and rides like a cloud.  I believe that Pashley got Reynolds to reissue the specific tubing just for this rig as it is out of fabrication.

If anyone would like any additional pics please PM me.  I'd be happy to discuss it in detail as well.

This exact same add appeared on a Chicago bike blog a few weeks ago.  Interesting how its appearance here immediately generated more than a few positive comments (as well it should) whereas on the Chicago blog there were none (as far as I can tell).  Different audience, different mindset, and a sharp eye for well crafted beauty here...

Please post a photo when you're done with the build.

I've wanted one since the first pics at a bike show, but I've never been able to get a price-to-use ratio worked out that makes sense for me. I suppose if I ever stumbled on one for $600 I would grab it, but by the time Guv'nor prices drop that low I'll be too old and creaky to get my leg over it ;-)

George, that is my ad as well.  I have had zero luck selling things there locally for sometime but I still post.  I will likely just bring it to the swaps this winter if it doesn't sell before then.

I'm flexible on price if anyone wants to make an offer.  Not Joe Bernard price flexible, but flexible :)

Yeah, I'm quite surprised that there was no interest there.  Then again, I'm surprised by a lot of things there.  But since you brought it up I have a question about the bike:  It's listed as having a 22.5" frame yet it looks much larger than that in the photo.  I ride a road bike with a 54 cm (roughly 21.5") frame with 700c wheels and 32mm tires and the Guv'nor frame looks more than just an inch larger than mine.  Is there something unusual about the way Pashley measures frames or am I missing something?

The wheels are larger than 700c (635 vs. 622 for 700c) and the bottom bracket is really, really high. Chainstays are nearly horizontal.

Purely curiousity here, Laing, as I am not in the market (although I'd love to justify buying Geeter's bike), but could you share your physical proportions in relation to fitting the 22.5 model? For example, what size traditional road frame ST and TT would you normally ride?

How does it climb and what's it like to shoulder and run up steps?

Pretty sure the bikes I rented in India were 635bcd. They rode like Cadillacs over the dirt village roads.

6' tall, 83.5 PBH, basically I have the body of someone 6'3" and the legs of someone who is 5'9". The Guv has a very short top tube so I am still working on a long setback seatpost (27.0 diameter -ugh) and handlebars that go further forward (Soma Moustache/3 speed II or Lauterwasser). If you look at pictures of Path Racers from the 30s, top tubes were at your navel, not below your crotch. I don't have enough miles on it to really comment on the ride. No real hills in Cocoa, FL. I don't have steps either, but the Guv'nor is no lightweight. I do have a Flying Pigeon that I built into poor mans 2 speed Guv'nor years ago. It has a very similar geometry (~68 degree frame angles, high BB, etc.) and the 635 rims, but basically made out of plumbing piping and it is very comfortable and smooth. I ride a 56 Sam (technically too big), 52 Bombadil (lugged Nitto setback seatpost), 52 Clementine, 60 (or 58?) Betty Foy, 22" Schwinn Paramount, 58 Gitane Tour de France. The Paramount and TdF are similar seatpost length as the Guv'nor (and all are Reynolds 531 as well), but there is no way for me to straddle the top tube on the Guv'nor with both feet on the ground, the TdF is pretty tight too.

The Guv'nor is about style and nostalgia (for a time before I was born) at a certain level. If Rivendells are for retro-grouches, Guv'nors are for troglodytes. Note that I said "if", I do not maintain that either is true. I am a member of the Guvnors' Assembly. These guys ride the Eroica in England on their Guv'nors and Speed 5s (a 5 speed IGH Guv'nor in green).

I rode my Guvnor a lot in 2008 and 2009, culminating in an 1,100-mile ride from Santa Rosa to Seattle (recounted at http://wheelsnorth.campyonly.com). It’s a great bike that rides like a dream and is much faster than you would expect from the way it looks. There is definitely something magical about Reynolds 531—I have several bikes made with the stuff (including two Alex Singers), and they all ride very nicely. Pashley is one of the few builders still using 531, which is a pity.

I augmented my stock Guvnor with a White Industries Dos Eno two-speed freewheel (cruising gear + “climbing” gear) and a pair of bottle cages fastened to the handlebars. I also changed out the tires with Schwalbe Marathons, which let me ride flat-free for the entire ride to Seattle.

The Guvnor is indeed a special bike. It doesn’t ride like a modern bike. The trail is more like a motorcycle chopper, and there’s a lot of wheel flop. OTOH, it’s SUPER comfy and handles washboard pavement extremely well. And it cruises … like a motorcycle. The descent off the top of Scott Mountain in Northern California was one of the most enjoyable in my entire cycling career—floating like an elegant bird around the curves, just barely applying the drum brakes when needed.

My Guvnor is on the far right in this photo of the Wheels North riders at the Oregon state line: IMG_0903.JPG

Laing and Eric: very interesting reviews. Eric, how does the Guvnor behave on hills? Is it a dog to climb with, or do its pleasant riding qualities extend to climbing?

Laing: what is the length of the top tube? And what is the rear over locknut spacing?

I’m admittedly intreagued by the original backroad bashabout bike. What kind of options are there for a 28” tire? Is the Delta Cruiser as plush and large as they come?

With abandon,
Patrick

If I had one, and I'm telling myself I do not need one, I'd replace the wheels with 700C wheels and install a pair of Snoqualmie Pass extra lights ...

Patrick Moore, thinking that a Guvnor would probably fit his AM hub, in ABQ, NM

This feels like the perfect bike for early morning cruises on the Hudson waterfront and weekend rides on northwest Jersey’s rail trails. I’d seriously consider it if it was my size.

TT is about 22-3/4” C to C. So the tape proves me wrong, the bars sweep back further than I thought.
Rear OLD is about 127mm

I find the Guvnor OK to climb with (or at least, I did when I was training for the ride to Seattle), but that’s in part because I tend to climb while seated. The bike’s geometry and long front end aren’t conducive to out-of-the-saddle riding.
