Howdy folks.

What color of padded Newbaums shellacs best to match a honey Brooks?  I think I have some clear Bullseye around somewhere, so whatever ends up honey looking with clear would be my preference.

Also, do I need 1 or 2 rolls to wrap a Chocomoose in front of thumby shifters?

Thanks, Doug

I typically do yellow or orange, with about 3-4 coats of AMBER shellac. You can get more of a golden honey color with yellow, or you can get the darker, more broken-in tones with orange.

Thanks Brian!

I was just looking at the RBW Newbaums page, and it doesn’t look like clear makes any of the colors look like Brooks honey.  It also looks like amber makes any of the non-dark colors look like a honey variation…  On a related note, it looks like Bullseye is only available in quarts (or bigger) now.  Oh, the humanity!

P.S.  Any opinions on padded Newbaums vs. regular wrapped over padded tape?

I use regular (unpadded) wrap, but put those gel strips (made by Fizik and others) in strategic places on the bars… then I wrap over it. I typically use three rolls of wrap on say, Noodle bars.

A can of shellac will literally last you years and years.

The traditional method of achieving honey cotton bar tape is to go yellow cloth + amber shellac. Three coats will do it.

The more coats you add the darker and shinier it gets... and the better it looks.

Depends on your area and hardware stores. I've found the Bullseye in pints locally.

Here are two examples (not mine) of yellow tape and amber shellac:

My Hillborne, yellow tape, first coat of shellac. Honey Brooks saddle pictured (not a perfect match at this stage, got very close eventually)

For reference here’s newbaum’s orange with two coats of amber shellac along with a honey saddle. You could then use your clear shellac to get it as shiny/sticky as you’d like.
