Check out this Radavist article.

Yes, you can ride a Rivendell like an MTB and have a ton of fun doing it. Man, I wish I were tall enough to get a second top tube Riv, because I think they look awesome.

This is a great setup for an off road Rivendell, but I would go with a Cambium saddle instead of a leather one, personally, but whatever. I haven't used drop bars on an off road bike except for cyclocross stuff, and those bars I've always felt were too narrow. Not these; check out the width of the bars...just wonderful. I have to try and get a similar bike together as I just bought a set of these bars in 615 length. I was thinking about installing them on my Appaloosa but I'm really digging the Bullmoose bars I have on it right now.

Huh, might need another frame now.

Damn those bars are wide! They're probably the widest available, I'd guess.

I personally have no use whatsoever for double top tubes on any bike in my size, but if I chose a bike for looks, I'd have to admit that that lower, curved tt does look nice.

I just put a deposit down on my drop bar mountain bike: a 56cm 650B Atlantis.  That's going to be SUPER fun!

Coincidentally, I just shaved my beard, too.  Benedict and I have a growing list of things in common:

We both have ridden a 650B Atlantis as a mountain bike
We both think that a mountain bike is a bike you ride in the mountains
We both shaved our unruly beards off
We both are fans of Rivendell
We both think that the handwringers wring their hands too much over geo-charts

I've been riding a long chainstay Rivendell with fancy Shimano v-brakes, double chainrings, and no front derailleur as an MTB for the past 2.5 years. Guess I'm just ahead of the curve.

I've never been much for double top tubes, but that Atlantis looks great. Just me size, as well.

But I think my budget will force me to stick with single top tubed, double chainringed, Super Moto clad, Jones barred Clem for now.

I guess that sort of explains why Rivendell no longer lists the Hunqapillar on their web site? Between the new Atlantis & the new Hill bike, maybe it's a bit of redundancy?

As the owner of a double top tube Appaloosa, I am a little jealous of the swoopy double on the Atlantis. Does make me want to throw some Ikons on though. Anyone know if the Joe can clear those 2.2s?

Hmmm... Ultra-romance is called a 'Rivendell sponsored rider and mobile dealer".  Does this mean Ultra got a free frame plus revenue on (his) sales in exchange for promoting Rivendell?  No negativism intended, as it sounds like a good move, that will potentially expose Rivendell to a younger hipper market.

The new Hunqapillar is sort of an anomaly.  It was always RBW's true expedition or off-road bike but the new versions actually have short chainstays, compared to other new Riv models.  I believe the 56 cm Hunq has chainstays that are only 49 cm.  I also believe that the Gus Boots-Willsen is somewhat a stand-in for the Hunqapillar and it appears to have very long chainstays.  It would be interesting to hear RBW's thinking on where the new Hunqapillar fits and why they kept the chainstays on the shorter side.  It would also be interesting to hear why it's currently on hiatus.  Maybe they plan an MIT version?  That would be spectacular.

All the Waterford bikes are pretty much gone, although I suspect if you call Grant and insist you want a Roadeo or Hunqapillar and are willing to pony up the cash and wait, you'll get one.

Bene has been a Riv rider for a long time and is what the kids call an Influencer. I have lots of issues with straight white shirtless guys on bikes but UltraBromance has done a lot of good for the cause of practical bikes with fat tires and mismatched drivetrains. He’s also not orthodox so he’ll use disc brakes and clicky shifting. I’m glad that most of ironic co-opting of queer culture has vanished and now he just rides cool bikes and sells well-thought out goods.

Ignore the marketing and focus on the wares.

I have 650b x 2.25 Schwalbe G Ones on my Appaloosa and they fit fine. The Ikons aren't particularly knobby so I bet they would work.

Since he popped up on instagram he's never really changed though. He was one of the first people I encountered that converted a threadless to 1" threaded stem. I asked him how he did it and he happily shared his knowledge. I asked him if it was durable, and he shared that he did the whole Arizona trail with it. Even now he still replies to a surprising amount of inquiries. I'm sure he gets tired of answering, "what bars. what tires, what saddle, what derailleur"" questions but he still does it.

To Jack's comment,

The Radavist is not transparent on which posts are "sponsored".

But it's better to be "sponsored" by Riv than the Big S!

He did a video in which his mother makes a pitch for his luggage.  It was something along the lnes of "my son makes the best bike bags so you should buy one".  Any commercial you remember is an effective one.  Kinda fun, too.

I don’t know. He’s a little cartoony but definitely seems smart enough to own all the cliches. I’ve seen more than 1 (5) thing he did that I thought, “woah. Cool. Haven’t seen that in that way before.” I’m happy he’s repping rivendells and maybe I’m dumb but I don’t think he’d do it if he didn’t like them.... I mean they can’t be paying him much.... and I bet there are a lot of other companies offering a lot more money.

I also think that Atlantis is bad ass.

Anyway, I’m just a straight white dude who only takes his shirt off when swimming and would really rather have it on then too.

(Also maybe let’s try to not discourage advocates from being advocates because they themselves happen to be of the current majority. It’s not helpful to anyone IMHO. I see more diversity in his and his girlfriend’s feed than about anywhere else in the popular cycling world. It isn’t perfect but it’s something).

I’ve never typed “imho” before.

I also remember he pushed the Rivendell Hail Mary last year and has been a long time supporter. I can’t imagine anyone is making a lot of money here and glad to see the publicity for Rivendell.

To which I say AMEN and Well Said! I posted about this over at iBob: went on the 50 miler at the Nutmeg Nor'Easter, and noticed two things: 1) he can shred the hell out of his Sam Hillborne, and he genuinely seemed to give a shit that everyone on the ride felt welcome, no matter what they were riding or how they looked.

To be clear: I think he’s a good advocate. He’s been amazing at being supportive of lots of capital G good causes and businesses. That is awesome. You can be an advocate for bikes no matter what your identity is. And you can/should be an ally then as well! It takes a little more care to do it in a way that isn’t othering and it’s been really great to see Bene (as well as Crust, the Radavist, a multitude of other fellow white dudes on bikes) grow into handling the issues of inclusion, representation and challenging the status quo.

Two thumbs up for Bene. 👍🏻👍🏻

Looks swanky, though personal preference for me is flat bars with cushy grips when it comes to rough off-roading; having my hands in the hoods while i'm getting bounced around at any noticeable speed just isn't comfortable for me and my thumb wedges.

The idea of just riding your bike with what works and not always looking at what the trends are or what the "best" bike/gear/tech for a situation seems very Riv.

Happy riding everyone,
Collin

I met Bene in northern New Mexico in what was the low point of my Great Divide ride in 2016. We stopped to talk and he assured me I was near the end of what seemed like an endless climb. The day before I was caught in a downpour that turned the trail into a slippery mud hole, my bike had pounds of dried mud stuck to it. Nothing but positive feelings about my encounter.   Steve

What in the world does being born with an inny or an outty and being unhappy about it have to do with cycling? Religion? Sure. Science? Youbetcha. Politics. Aye. Sigh. But, here, cycling? No. Please. No. Let us not be inclusive of being so wildly inclusive as to be exclusive and devisive. Let’s stay focused on Riv and cycling please.

The two Rivendell models that I most covet are the Atlantis and the Hunqapillar. When I was considered buying my first Riv I found a review on the Atlantis that Benedict had done along with Bikepacking.com.  For those who may remember this spread it featured photos of him making coffee outside alongside this gorgeous Atlantis. My exposure to that review really finally convinced me to sell off my carbon unitasker bikes in favor of a lugged steel bag toting machine that could carry me and my stuff off into the wilderness. I balked at the price of a MUSA Atlantis and decided on a complete Sam as my gateway into Riv. I have since purchased a Appaloosa as my second Riv to serve as my touring rig. I love the Appaloosa but sometimes wish I waited just a little longer until the MIT Atlantis became available. It wouldn't make any sense for me to replace my Appaloosa with the Atlantis now because they do exactly the same thing.  I have nothing against 2TT's but I do like the appearance of the truss style 2TT on the Atlantis slightly better than the Joe. I am hoping that Rivendell also decides to do a MIT Hunq at some point.
