Chauncey just texted me saying that the powder coater is out of the near-match to the "sage green" that Joe Bell used for my 2003 custom -- frame later modified by Chauncey with the color in the photo below.

I've asked him to see if the coater can order more, but while I wait on tenterhooks (is that metaphor appropriately applied? Weren't tenterhooks used for processing wool?), I ask y'all: what color would you choose for a new road frame to be built with color matched racks, silver VO fenders, and silver components? -- oh, and I like red accents: bar tape and panniers.

Orange won't do b/c I like red, red won't do b/c I don't like red frames; no black or white -- bleh! I have Ford Blue already -- beautiful! -- and Forest Green. No turquoise or pink. Yellow, blech.

Should be a color that is readily available in touch up quantities.

Tell me what you think so that I can complain about your suggestion.

Turns out, silver on silver looks great.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that VW Reflex Silver (which I bought for my car) happens to work fine for scratches on this frame (no thanks to the LBS for having made said scratches while replacing the 46T chainring).

Light blue can also work great, as shown here

Aha, excellent, at least for the light blue; thanks. I recall now the powdercoat the same man gave my old Herse: similar shade to the original, but even nicer, and it had a nice, "liquid" look to it. Not a fan of silver, though.

Patrick,

One of the great attributes of Sage Green is its subtlety compared to purer colors -- red, blue, yellow, etc.  A color that has a similar quality that you may have already considered is a light beige -- sort of the color of VW Beetles of long ago.  I loved Beetles of this color.  I looked for a Pantone color that might have a similar attraction.  I really like Pantone 7628 C.  I tried to copy a chip and upload it but Pantone doesn't make this easy to do.  Take a look.

Thanks, Steve. I think I recall the color; in fact, I think my family had a Type 3 station wagon for a while in that color, but that was circa 1970 and too long ago to recall the color clearly (I do recall that at 5K+ feet with a 50 HP carburetted engine and 3 speed automatic, it couldn't get out of its own way, even among the Wartbergs and Anglias and Renault 4s).

The attachment doesn't show the color*, and when I search for  Pantone 7628 C, I get this, which I am sure is not what you have in mind:

Kogswell "Kustard" as used on the 1st gen P/Rs is pretty nice and always gets positive comments from passers by

A bolder yellow, like the Kool Yellow Schwinn used on some older Paramounts goes well with silver and red accents, too:

Jack Taylor had a similar Flamboyant Yellow that looks nice

Battleship grey.  The kind they paint industrial machinery. Goes with anything.  Easily touched up with paint available everywhere.
(I wouldn't like it, but you might.  My favorite for bike frames is gloss black - black w/ white highlights on head tube, etc. is even better)

I love my sage green Riv but the 2nd choice for me was the color Riv used to call their "standard" color. It was that metallic light blue/silver. I always thought that looked good. Not sure if that could be done with powder though.

I really like the blue/grey color on bikes and it has been on a few autos lately. Like the Subaru color they call "cool gray khaki". That one looks really good in person and I think it would look great on a bike frame.

I agree yellow is a bad choice for bikes. I own two due to either no other color option or it being the lesser of two evils. Yellow bikes really show any dirt or grease on the frame.

This Ford gray is pretty sweet. I wasn't thinking of it at the time, but my Riv Custom will be close to this shade with red panels.

I like the navy-ish blue on this early '70s Fuji Finest. Understated yet with depth and personality. Handles chrome well, too. Might want to go easy on the red accents though, lest you veer into the 4th of July.

I've been pondering this same question for a custom bike that will be going to (wet) paint any day now. I had thought I wanted a deep sunflower yellow like the broken bike it's replacing, but decided to go with blue instead. But not light blue and not dark blue. I want a bike that when folks look at it they say "that's blue." Looking at swatches I think what I want is saphire blue, sometimes called "royal azure" see swatch attached.

The last bike I got to pick color for, I went with gloss mid-gray as a blank slate to hang a bunch of purple anodized parts on - see image.

But I agree with others that for your criteria - easy to touch up, looks good with silver, not those colors you don't like, it's hard to beat gloss black.

Thanks, all, some good suggestions and some good advice about thinking this through -- which is my purpose in asking such questions, since I do know my own tastes.

Actually, while I don't really like black or gray for frames, I have owned several glossy black bikes that looked good; in fact, my first home-brew paint job was hand sprayed (as in pump gun) gloss black oil-based enamel with gold pin striping added by hand. Later I had a decent looking battleship gray Stumpjumper Comp with orangy-red accents.

But black shows dust too much. I find white boring; I didn't care for the yellow of the Motobecane; and I already have a darkish (Ford) blue -- need a different color to tell the bikes apart. (Kidding.) I recall a very nice metallic dark green on a 1991 Stumpjumper Team, but you can't get that with powdercoat, I imagine. In fact, you can't do metallic with your usual $150 powdercoats, can you?

Chauncey says he'll probably be able to get the sage green -- not identical to but close enough to the original 2003 Joe Bell Rivendell sage green; but if he can't, I'll ask for a Herse-like blue.

Funny, I know that orange is a favorite on this list, but while I like it better than yellow, I just for some reason don't care for it on a bike frame.

My Sam came in Sage, and I like it.  I get compliments, so others think it is a good color as well.
But if I was doing a custom repaint I’d go for 1968 Camaro Rally Green.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968-chevrolet-camaro-32/
I used to paint my Nash Metropolitans this color.

It wouldn’t go well with red trim, but white or gold or black would highlight it well.

Patrick,

After seeing some of the examples posted, I'm really digging silver and battleship gray.

If your powder coater can in fact get you the green you want (sage, you said?), then obviously that's best. I've found it's very hard to imagine a color on a bike from a paint chip. Something about the narrow tubes as opposed to a monolithic wall of color. I've had two bikes PC'd in a color other than black. For one of them (cream), I liked it even more than I thought I would. For the other (sort of a Bianchi Celeste / sage green that looked great on a paint chip), I ended up displeased. Part of my displeasure was the glossiness, which made it look a yellowish, lime-green in certain light. I ended up taking steel wool to the powder coat finish to dull it, making the finish matte; I liked it much better. That bike was done over 10 years ago and the PC is still holding up well. If I were to do it all over again, I'd get a shade of green with more gray in it.

The reason black, silver, battleship gray and a dull finish sage green work so well with silver components is basically what Trace Adkins said hereHer Favorite Color is Chrome

a dusty light-red (also known as a dusty pink) would look very good with red accents and bags, same amount of white in it as the sage blue, a touch of blue to cool it down to pastel, a hint of black to mute it.  80% white, 14% red, 2% blue 4% black.     Think about it, it's foolproof.

Myself, I'd probably want to paint it after a classic bike I've been inspired by (Riv or not) so the colour has context, rather than just one I like the look of.

But what about this vintage machinery green:

I'll gush...

I agree about the classy classic black with white details. Semigloss even better.  Those Rivs with can hang out with the classics.

There was a Rosco Bubbe that had something like a flat sage green that I liked a lot.  The flat/matte finish is like the gray that comes to mind when you all say battleship gray.
I'm thinking of a gray that is so matte that its perhaps inconsistent, almost sandy, like some parts are showing a coating of dried sea spray.

I absolutely love the butterscotch color that went on some of the Clems.  I stare at a small, older Mercedes in that color a few blocks away...and I'm not even a car guy!

I saw a Bombadil in something like a copper.  I think there's one in a Riv YouTube video.  Lovely.

But just last week I happened upon stonehog.com and found pics of Brian Hanson's Homer in something like "light new penny copper" and that might be my favorite paint of all time.

Thanks, Jason. I did find the color. It's not bad, but not to my taste.

The copper is interesting, as is that industrial green which I do like and which I will add to my short list. For some reason I do like green.

Rose, pretty but not for me. Custard: again, not bad but not my thing.

Funny how particular one's preferences are for frame colors. I am far less picky about the color of my car or my shirts, tho' I do have preferences.

Again, I do think glossy black looks nice, but (1) it somehow looks to "formal", even while looking nice, and (2) it shows dust too easily -- I ride in a dusty environment.

In order of preference -- and see! This exercise did help me choose! -- Sage Green, with ~Herse Blue and Industrial Green tied for second place.

If you like Herse blue, you might like RAL6034, the powder coat color I chose for this bike:

Myself, I'd probably want to paint it after a classic bike I've been inspired by (Riv or not) so the colour has context, rather than just one I like the look of.

But what about this vintage machinery green:

(Hope that works)

That blue is great. Also like grey with tinge of green like the the ocean on a stormy day.

The Rivendell Redwood was painted an interesting green, sort of a darker sage:

The blue and the 2 greens are pretty. I have in mind a blue that is very slightly darker; though who can tell when I look with my eyes at a color on a screen. But when I had my Herse powdercoated, the blue seemed slightly more cerulean and had a wonderful "liquid" appearance. As for the greens, I prefer -- for "real" greens and not sage green -- a darker shade the "road bike for dirt" is British racing green, but I also like that industrial green that someone suggested.

Patrick Moore, just back from a nice bosque pavement + ditchbank ride, but who forgot to take photos.

All very pretty indeed; I'd choose the darker blue and the green if (1) I didn't already have a bike in Ford Blue -- close enough to the Hunquapillar; and if I didn't just prefer the sage green.

My Ford Blue 1999 Joe Starck as slightly altered and powdercoated by C Matthews a couple of years ago; and the Matthews "road bike for dirt" -- fenders slightly modified since photo taken.

Oh, and I forgot the Dupont LB5B/T4, aka vintage VW Aquarius Blue on my L'Avecaise:

Anton,
I like that color!!
I am getting ready to paint the frame, fork and rack that I built. So my question is can a base coat color be matched to a powder coat color?
Thanks!

Patrick,
When will they let you know if they can get the sage? Is it just a question of how long you're willing to wait? (Sorry if I missed this detail)

I should know soon; Chauncey didn't seem too worried about actually getting it, just said that they were currently out. But I've got "slightly bluer-than-Herse blue" and industrial green as fallbacks (thanks, lists).
