Hello, good people.

So, a few months ago my freshly built up '88 Miyata 1000 was stolen off my front porch. This SUCKED. What also SUCKS is that it had front and rear Shimano CX50 cantilever brakes, which are the easiest to setup and best performing cantilever brakes (for the price) that I've tried (it also had a bunch of other awesome components on it that I won't cry about here). What is super SUCKY is that Shimano has discontinued these brakes...

Ease of setup is a must. I have struggled with good cantilever setups on so many bikes and even the ones I got real good don't work quite as good as these--and took A LOT longer to dial in. I am working on my skills, but in the meantime, I'd love to find another set of these CX50 brakes (or similar, if there was another Shimano anti brake like this) for my '85 Specialized Expedition build (just found a nice frame set locally and am jazzed).

I have tried and do like the current Diacompe DC980, which is probably the closest currently available canti around a similar price point, but I don't think they'd be a good choice for this build. And I don't want to spend Paul money on this project. Open to alternatives, but as mentioned, I really don't wanna futz around w the setup too much.

Thanks!

Another alternative is the IRD Cafam II. I have both these and Pauls, and the Cafams are 95% as good as Paul for 75% the money. Easy to set up because (like the cx50) they use threaded post pads (they also come packaged with quite good cartridge pads and straddle/wires.)

Hi Joe,

I am very sorry to know that your '88 Miyata 1000 was most recently stolen off your front your front porch. What a heartbreaking experience.

I have one bike's worth of Dia Compe 980 silver cantilever brakes that are coming off my bike here by the end of this week for your consideration of purchasing. They are in very good condition. Let me know if you are interested otherwise from your thinking.

Kim Hetzel.

Thanks for all the replies! as usual someone has something, so I think this may be good to go :)

Regrading the IRD stuff: As much as I like the vibe/aesthetic of their products, the QC seems to be lacking and they've been exceptionally slow to respond to emails/phone inquiries. I'm glad to hear the cafam brakes are good though. Maybe I'll give them a try at some point! How are the levers for those (compared to Paul or Velo Orange)?

Thanks!
