Hi all, I'm wondering if there are any tires slightly larger than the Little Big Bens I'm using now. Those measure about 38mm, and I have room for a bit more. Would like to maximize flotation! I know there are the Marathon Supremes listed at 42mm (40mm actual is my guess), and those are probably my go-to tires. Just wondering if there is anything else out there? These are for a tandem, so need to handle 80-85psi and a 400lbs weight FWIW.
Thanks!

If it were me, I would at least consider Standard Casing Barlow Pass 700x38 if I wanted more cush.  On a tandem I can certainly understand preferring to go armored, though

Bill, I've thought about those, great tires, right! But am just a touch reluctant to have them on a tandem. The LBBs are just a little too overkill, and I think the BPs would be a little under. The Supremes are probably just right, but checking my options before I go on a Bike24 buying spree! It's an upright meander about sort of tandem, so really it's just me being picky...
Thanks!

David:

The Marathon Supremes that are sized 40 mm / 42 mm / 1-5/8" (take your pick) measure 40 mm on my A 719 rims at around 60 psi.  The weigh 490 gr.

If you want to try them I have a pair of folding Mondials (760 gr) in 45 /47 /1-3/4".  Don't recall if I measured them when I had them on the Atlantis.  I think I ran them at around 50 psi at Strada Rossa & West Point.  I like 'em off road but the Supremes are more comfy.

Maybe 50 mm Supremes?  I think there was a "FS" post either here or iBOB for a pair.  Could be kinda neat on a tandem, if they'll fit.  Curtis uses them & could give you an actual width measurement.

I have ridden the 50-622 (measures 45mm) Supreme on my Hunqapillar for the last 2 years. I have been tempted by all the rave reviews of the Barlow Pass, but the Supreme always feels good. Bob

Doug's measurements are all similar to mine, as they should be, my 50mm Supremes are on A319s. I usually have 40 psi in the front and 50 psi in the rear.

I like the Resist Nomads. Their 45 size runs about 40mm in practice, and seems to roll very nicely.

I recently installed the 42mm Soma Cazaderos on my Sam. I'm really enjoying them for mixed terrain riding.

Any thread that suggests a Soma Cazadero should include a corresponding suggestion for a Bruce Gordon Rock and Road, just for equal air time.

Nomads! I forgot about those... and I have a pair in the cellar even! Brilliant!

I wonder if I could fit the 50mm (45 actual) Supremes. I don't think I have quite enough room for that. 42mm is about my max. Cazadero and R&Rs are going to be too big, but also meatier than I need. This is an around town bike that I want cush. Considering a 650B conversion on it just so I can fit fatter, but don't ride enough to justify. Would have just bought a Hub^3 in that case!!!

Speaking of which, I saw a Raleigh tandem on the sales floor at CyclePath in Hayward today.  It must have been the Cadent model.  Mixte in back, 650B wheels, dual disc brakes and <$1500.

Just looked 'em up, the pricier one retails for $1,400. Hope they can make a go of 'em... love tandems in all their incarnations!
Here's our set up with the above-mentioned LBBs:

I just swapped out 50mm marathon supremes (60$ shipped for the pair) for continental speed ride 42s.
I like them so far. Wondering how long they'll last and if they'll flat a lot. Not sure they are stout enough for a tandem.
I find the Marathon supremes to be considerably more cushy than other marathon versions, little big bens or comparably sized big apples.

I like the Soma Shikoros. I switched them out for Jack Browns on my Sam because I couldn't fit them under my fenders. No flats thus far, and good protection despite the relatively light weight.

Consider the Panaracer 700 x 40 Gravel King SK. By all real world accounts these actually measure 42mm+ with great cush riding them @ 30-40 psi. I have not bought these myself simply because I don't need new tires, my discontinued Kenda Kwick Roller EZ-ride tires seem to wear very slowly. I would recommend these as the 45c measures about 41mm but for some silly reason Kinda dq'd them. For comparison these roll about as well as 40c Vittoria Hypers but have alot more volume and cush. The 40c Hypers are not a very volumnious tire.

Thanks D, B, & G! I haven't heard of the Conti Speed Rides or the Soma Shikoros... thanks for putting them on the radar! Forgot about the Gravel Kings, I know they're supposed to be really good. I might not be able to fit anything with any knobs on it though... that 42mm clearance is going to be with a round tire measured at the roundest part. Toward the tread it tapers in.

Wish I could fit those Supremes, Drew! But just off by a smidge. Great deal!

No sweat!

Cool thing about the Shikoros is they aren't overly heavy even though they have flat protection in both the tread and sidewalls. I've only ridden a couple hundred miles on mine at most, but I'm more than pleased with the ride quality.

Surly has a new tire out called ExtraTerrestrial and it's being compared favorably with the Mondial.  It first came out in a 26" x 2.5" version and now a 29" x 2.5" but I've read that a 700c x 40 version is in the works.  Supposedly a bombproof tire with surprising performance.  You might check out some reviews to see if it's something you might be interested in waiting for.

Thanks for that one, Chris.

I'm going to mount up the Nomads languishing in storage. I quit running  them on my single because at lower pressure they really flopped during cornering and that was a bit disconcerting. I think at the higher pressures I'd be running on a tandem, they will do great. I don't recall how big they got, at least 40. Maybe 42 I can't find anything listing max pressure recommendation for them, hopefully 80psi won't be too much. That will also let me judge better if the 45mm (nominal) Supremes would fit. That would be sweet!

To reiterate, nothing wrong at all with the Little Big Bens. They're just a touch below would I can fit and therefore want to max out capacity. They measure right at 38mm on the casing, measured between the sipping in the tread. Their thicker tread would probably feel a bit clunky on a single, but on the tandem with the extra weight and higher pressure, they feel good.

Leslie, I have MSOs and my Quickbeam... GREAT tires! Don't need the tread though, and want the extra 2mm if I can get it!

So, I obsessively swapped out tires in the dark tonight (no lights in bike shed!). The Nomads I forgot I had (first world problems) fit perfectly! A purely subjective, five minute ride, first with the stoker and then without, makes me think these are perfect! Just the feel I was looking for. Getting close to that firm marshmallow ride that eluded me to this point! The Nomads are fantastic with a bit more pressure. Sidewall says max 80psi, so that's what I went to (Remember, close to 400lbs of team + rig). Their sidewalls are definitely thinner than the LBBs, but I believe I can feel the difference in cush (no, not Kush... at least not till November). Will probably degrade in my shed, as I don't get along well with skinwall tires. Measure 41.8 on 25mm rims. All systems are go!

Thanks for the recommendations, worked out great! Might have some LBBs for sale, but will probably keep for back ups.

I came across this chart showing wide tires that are gravel oriented and show whether they are tubeless compatible.

Apparently there are a lot more tires just coming out in wide widths that I've not heard of or seen discussed here.

Things are just getting better and better in the big, wide world!

Another vote for the Shikoro's. They are basically just fat Jack Brown blues – just as round, just as smooth, just as hard to flat. It's what I really always wanted in a tire for all the years I rode JB's.

Has been my daily driver most of the year – mostly paved, some dirt, some gravel. Ride them at 70 or 80 on paved rides and they roll like butter, otherwise 50 or 60 and they get most jobs done with aplomb.

I also tried the Supple Vitesse (~= fat Jack Brown Greens). Lovely, but not enough flat protection for my riding.
