Reason for sale? I want a second Jones bike as I love how it fits/rides.

That’s a great looking machine. Seems like reasonable price too.

What did you do silly? Buy a Clem L that you don’t really want, so now it’s for sale? Bought way too many bikes way too fast and somebody has decided you should settle down to fewer bikes? Bought yet another bike or bikes and need $1600 to pay for them?

Bill,

Belopsky's frantic pace of bike acquisition and disposal is a good thing for the community for several reasons:

1) It provides many opportunities for those his size (alas, or perhaps, thankfully not me...) to get barely ridden, almost new bikes at a discount.
2) It makes my own bike churning tendencies look positively ascetic.
3) It boosts Riv and other purveyors' sales as he tries one new bike after another.

I salute his commitment to the search for his "perfect" bike and I sincerely hope that he someday finds a bike that he likes well enough to keep...  and propose that he should name at least one bike Rocinante.    :)

Julian pointed out several true things.

I was just looking for the reason why, on the 10th Bump of his FS listing, did he confess to doing ‘something silly’? It sounds like there’s an interesting backstory there that he’s eager to tell.

Joe, to be fair, the Clem in question is oos at Riv, and Belopsky is including a $130+ saddle, a $90 rack (w/the rails), $20+ of nice grips and a bell, and shipping, which, depending upon where the buyer lives, is worth another $75-175 so that's about $250 +/- less than a pre-order Clem, if and about $350 +/- less than the in-stock price, if it were available. Not a bad deal for what looks like a brand new bike if one is in the market.

Also, Clems don’t seem to hold their value especially well. I bought and sold my 59H complete for right about $850. No accessories, but it was in fine shape.

Julian: I understand the thinking behind the price, I've just sold too many bikes to see it as realistic. There's always a chance you'll get lucky and find that buyer who just HAS to have your bike, but mostly the used market doesn't care about upgrades and accessories. People look at the new price and count back from there, that's just the way it is.

In fairness to the Clem, I don't think any bike holds it's value especially well when you buy it new and quickly decide you want to turn it around and resell it. If I paid retail for any new complete bike today, rode it for 10 miles and then decided I wanted to sell it, I'd have to take a big 'haircut', I think.  In the neighborhood of half-retail sounds about right to me, in terms of what most second-hand buyers expect.  There are certainly exceptions, but I don't know of any $1500-range bike that I could buy today and expect to re-sell tomorrow for over 80% of retail.  Igor's Senor Frank Jones is up on ebay also, and we'll see if he gets his price on that.  His title says "used less than 10 miles",  This is one of those places where changing one's mind can be expensive.

I've quickly turned around a new Sam and a Cheviot during a 2-year bike buying/spelling spree. I was lucky to sell both for about $300 less that what i paid new. A big hit overall, but way less a hit then it it was anything other than a Rivendell. For someone on the fence or looking at a new bike then to see one pop up in your size at a deal is huge, especially considering $2200+ is a stretch for a complete bike already. But, but, but....this was all done through SF craigslist, never got any hits off this list. Not sure why that is. I think being in a biking mecca and so close to HQ gets a lot of hits. I'm pretty surprised some things on this list take so long to sell (Philip's Rodeo a while back, which was in my size) is one. Igor's 2 bikes (also in my size) are two other ones. I honestly think some on here are right about the high price, at least for the list and in my experience...if someone was looking for something like these already they would have moved by now. Ebay or craigslist might be better (but ebay you get hit with the fees and CL is really region dependent). Someone (not me) in the Bay Area should start a service to list and sell on the local CL here ;).

I bought and sold a Clem recently and took quite a hit but thought it was a fair price. The asking price on this one factors in the regret but seems too high. Most buyers seem to keep their own saddles and pedals so the only added value is the rack. I doubt it will sell for $1,600 but we will see.

Y'all:

Indeed, I'm just wishing IB bought and sold road bikes in my size (58 / 59 please & thank you) at same pace, e.g. Hilsen, Atlantis, Chapman, Bishop, Legolas, Lyon, Saluki....

Wow, I'd be totally headed to N++++

I meant no disrespect Igor. My experience with the ore-owned bike market is that prices are low relative to new bike pricing. I hope you get your asking price as I know it’s worth it.
