My mother-in-law got excited over my husband's new bike. New bike envy? She plunked down her money and got one of John's Clementines. Then she ordered a zillion accoutrements and this is the final product. The guy pictured works at the shop. It is in northern MN and couldn't be cuter. Look at those old wood floors! Anyway, you can see he was a little confused about the bottle cage, but we'll fix that. And what is with that rear fender line? A beautiful bike, nonetheless.

She'll have to be content with opening her garage door and only visually enjoying her bike. Spring seems so far away...

Sweeeeet! Hilarious on the bottle cage. That's why I teach my kids to always try it to make sure it works. Clearly the poor lad didn't put a bottle in that cage. Sardonic grin. Will his Mom's purchace help or hinder hubbie's love of his bike? Even bigger sardonic grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Not surprising, if you're not familiar with the Iris cage. I hope she
has better luck getting a bottle out of one of them than I did: I tried
and needed two hands to do it.

Not sure if that's one of those fender mount spacing problems we were
discussing a couple of weeks ago, or just general unfamiliarity.

And what a capacious rear bag!

What a beautiful bike! She will be ready to go anywhere, and carry anything!

That is a beautiful bike. And yes that fender needs a spacer! You are a Rivendell evangelist!

I installed my first King Cage Iris that way too.  It works if you put in the bottle from the side, never had one fall out.  That said it works better the correct way.

Ha! My first one (followed quickly by my next four) I sat in bewilderment puzzling out what was what. I gaped at photos. I gave up and trusted experience would enlighten my ignorance. Upside down, of course. Maybe it was my vertigo, or something else, but even after I knew the base tab goes on the bottom I still got some wrong.

Steve, the Iris can grip as much or as little as you want. Just squeeze in or out to taste. I keep mine quite snug and washboard at speed doesn't eject a bottle anymore. (standard cages ejected all the time).

With abandon,
Patrick

Nothing at all to do with vertigo - "right side up" just looks totally wrong and even when you know from reading how it's supposed to go, it's almost impossible to overcome the desire to mount it upside down.

I finally decided to use mine only in the under-the-downtube position, where they are entirely unsurpassed.

I'm sure your mom-in-law will love that bike. It's beautiful! I, too, installed that cage upside down the first time. They are wonderful, though.

Jeez.  I thought I was the only one who installed that bottle cage upside down.  For what it's worth, it works upside down; you just have to kind of wrestle the bottle in and out a bit.  Works a whole lot better, however, when it's properly installed.

Always nice when a little more beauty enters the world!  Give your  mother-in law our congratulations on her good taste.  As for the the cage.... christen it with champaign and it will look just fine.

Looks like just the right amount of accoutrements.  As to the bottle cage, I looked at it & wondered "what's wrong?".  Chuckle, after reading the other replys.  And this is your MIL?  I've heard of MILs nudging at a distance; didn't realize the energy could flow the other way.  Good for you, and she's lucky to have you in her family.

Haha! Yes, it's my MIL's bike. We're a rare pair in that we actually love each other and work in our mutual best interests. I hit gold when I got my in-laws as family. My late father-in-law was even more wonderful, and that's saying something.

My MIL wanted a bike like ours after all the excitement 'round here. But she fell in love with Riv all by herself after calling and chatting with Miesha. Sealed the deal. My MIL is "Minnesota nice" and Miesha is cut from the same cloth.  She decided to buy everything but the kitchen sink after that. She called me with her credit card and told me to "get everything you can get for my bike." Yikes. Then she called Miesha and ordered a load of hats, bandanas, clothing and other gear. I cringe to think of the bill.

The mechanic said over and over how solidly made and deluxe her bike was, which thrilled her to no end. She took the photos and insisted on one with the mechanic, but there isn't one of her! I'm bringing our Rivs home this summer and we'll ride ours and hers together all over the Paul Bunyan State Trail. A family reunion, indeed.

Your family sounds pretty great -- awesome kids, MIL, DH , and you -- the whole package -- yay for you all!

It's great she's got a shop with an appreciative and supportive staff -- here that's not so likely in 2/3 of our shops.  When you go home perhaps you can stop in with a beverage (is that guy 21?) for the mechanic and gently show him how fenders and the Iris cage are supposed to be mounted!
