Just curious if anyone has real opinions on the actually functionality of Moon Units vs normal stock ones. My instinct is telling me that it's a $60 shiny thing that will make adjustment & setup a tiny bit easier. Also it seems it gives the straddle cable a different yoke shape so that was my main nerd out question. I'd be using them with the Touring Cantis btw. Thanks!

They are a lot easier to set up -- it's a lot easier to tighten the cable with the fixed bolt. They're wider than most carriers, which translates into a bit more leverage  (or mechanical advantage) , which "might" be good with certain aero brake levers (making sure you have enough lever pull), but it is not really that wide, and adjusting the straddle cable height up or down will in most cases have more impact on the amount of mechanical advantage.

I do have a set with Suntour XC Pro Cantilevers on my Toyo Atlantis -- they're nice and worthwhile, but I got mine for about $25 used, so...     :)

I can't speak to a Moon Unit but I have used a wider cable carrier and it offered nothing over the basic Dia-Compe style ones. More effectiive for the front at least is a Tektro 1277A fork mounted cable stop. They can be used in the rear of your bike has no cable stop, use the correct mounting bolt, and the geometry is right.

I really like the bits of useful information that I learn on this list.  I need to install a rear center pull brake on a bike with no cable stop and with no room between the seat post binder ears for your typical suspended stop. But I do have one of the Tektro front cable stops. Now I just need to find it. Thanks, Garth!

Staying with Paul, if you can’t get the Tektro to work there’s always the Funky Monkey:

Does the curve in the Moon Unit offer a more graceful curve to the straddle cable?  If so, is there a little bit less slack in the system and a slightly better feel at the lever?  For $40-60, I decided not to find out!  Maybe someday I'll try it.

Yes, a bit easier to set up because you tighten the cable with an allen wrench, a little easier to snug up the cable initially. I like the curve action on the straddle cable, it does not bind on the cable groove like what happens, sometimes, with the traditional Dia Compe straddle hanger. Plus, you can get them in various colors and they are good bike bling gifts to your riding buddies.

I will never find it again but I read somewhere that Paul Price said the Moon Units don't work any better than other cable hangers, but they look cool.

I gave up on them because they're too fancy and expensive, realizing a humble cable hanger is all you need. I still have a set on my Appaloosa.

For the price of Moon Units I'd rather have some funky vintage hangers from Suntour or Mafac or those cool rollers Dia Compe used to make.

Eric do you mean these rollers?  https://velo-orange.com/collections/brake-parts/products/gran-compe-straddle-cable-hanger

i just upgrade to these, and i do like how it was a little easier to get the starting cable in, and you can remove the roller in case your straddle cable have ends already on them, but i dunno if it made any difference over the standard $1 dia compe carriers i was using before!

the paul's look cool but i agree with others, not sure its enough of a difference to choose over standard options, but then again some choices we make on bike parts dont always make sense!

Jitensha used to have some of theirs online but I'm not seeing them anymore. I'll look through my photos from the last time I was there. Really nice bits for sure.

I like moon units. I’ve got a set of green ones on my Quickbeam. They replaced the stock Shimano cabling. They don’t work any better, and I made sure the cable lengths matched the Shimano units. I wouldn’t trade them back.

They are easy to manage, because you can tighten the cable bolts without twisting anything. They turn an unremarkable part of the bike into a nice statement. They are much heavier and much more expensive.

Cool! Serious thanks for all of these replies. I went ahead and installed the rear Tour Canti and used the stock hanger. First time with these (had the Neo Retro before). Those little studs that slip over the posts are wild! Cool design and super easy to adjust the tension. Anyway I think I'll be patient and just wait for the right pair of used Funky Monkeys that are cheap.
