Non-Aero brake levers for moustache bars

I like moustache bars, have 'em on two bikes already, and probably going to put them on the Quickbeam that's coming. I especially love the Suntour Superbe levers on my '98 LongLow. Ah, but those were the last of the last, no longer to be found. What are good alternatives now for non-aero levers, if I were looking for new stock? DiaCompe?

I've used DiaCompe 204's on mustache bars with Tektro 720's on a couple of different bikes. Inexpensive, works great, and the quick release on the levers is handy.

I've used a couple different Shimano 600 levers on my moustache bars.
I like them, too.

I've used DC 204, Tektro R200, and reverse pull levers with mousy ache bars. My favorite combo if the reach is shortish is the beefy R200 and riding primarily stretched out on the hoods. With a longish reach I like the reverse pull levers, so you can brake with your weight back and have that clean bar. The 204 was always good, too, but not quite as handy for me to grip and stretch out. Seems all my bikes get mousy ache bars sooner or later.

Those Superbes are indeed superbe I still love mine but need new hoods. Do Campy NR pattern replacements fit right?

By the way-- mousy ache???

Those gum hoods don't look that good any more!  I don't see any Elmer's on those.

 

Seriously, how do they compare size wise to the ubiquitous Tektros?  I have large hands and find the newer Shimano levers a bit "petite".  I need some non-aero levers for my new bike and was comparing the NOS shimano 600's to the Dia Compe Gran Comps

Not Elmer's, ghetto-sugru, get it right!!!  :-)

The 600s are basically the same as the contemporary Shimano shape.  So if you're not a fan, these probably won't help.  On M-bars it's a moot point though, as you're resting your hand on the side of the levers.  I don't use that position very often anyway... YMMV

well now I know not to bid on any S600's on EBAY. I did just win some '80s' Gran Compe's. I'll see how those feel when I get them.

Andrew -

Being an old MTB'er my first reaction to hard braking used to be
moving as far aft as possible. For that reason, good or bad, I tried
out some bar-end brake levers. As I'd never used the hoods of road
bike levers successfully as a gripping area I didn't miss them.
Braking was surprisingly good. And since it's a singlespeed, as your
Quickbeam will be, I never needed to mount bar-end shifters. These
were Tektro's.
