Hey group,

I've got a set of Rich built 650b wheels, Velocity 32H rims, that I
would like to trade for a 26" set of similar quality. These are on my
Bleriot and were bought from a list member about 1.5 years ago. Not a
lot of miles on them since then. I used to ride with 26" rims on my
Bleriot and sport Big Apples, which I'd like to do again. The
cassette is 12-25 and we can work out whether you want it (Shimano
Hyperglide). Contact me off list if you wanna trade.

Found a trader, thanks.

I'd be very interested in knowing more about your set-up for running
26" rims and big apples on your bleriot frame.

I ran with this setup for a while, using Dia Compe centerpulls. The
brakes were pretty much bottomed out to match the rims, but they
work. I have 50mm Big Apples, so on a 556 wheel the diameter is about
656 (556+50+50). Running a 32mm tire on a 584 rim (650b) has a
diameter of about 648 (584+32+32), so it doesn't really change the
handling from a typical setup, and I like the fatter tire and the way
it fits a little better lower in the fork and rear stays. It also
leaves some room for fenders, moreso than when I run Fatty Rumpkins on
my Bleriot.

It's as simple as that. See a pic of my old setup at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37990645@N04/3954439832/. This was my
Bleriot that was recked in '10, but I've got another champion just
like it again.

I am soooo bummed that I sold my Bleriot knowing now that I could have done this!

What does "bottomed out" mean here? Do you mean you have the pads at
the bottom of the slots, or do you mean the levers bottom out before you
get maximum braking?

I ran 26" wheels on my 700 size bike, using Tektro long reach calipers with the pads at the bottom of the slot. The brakes work, but the handling of the bike was negatively affected.

And I'll bet you couldn't pedal through corners!

In the opposite direction, I once bought a KHS mtb tandem that the
seller had used for touring with 622X28 tires and short reach
calipers. I converted it back to 559 X 35.

Dang, would have been a great set of wheels for my planned 26">650B
Atlantis (56cm) conversion.

By bottomed out I mean the pads were all the way down, as I recall.
Never had any braking (or handling) issues, and I haven't noticed
speed differences being back on the 650b.

That bike has a really cool look to it. Do you think you could run
26" rims with BAs on a 650B frame with canti-bosses? Are there brakes
that would give adequate reach?
