Uh, y'all know it's September, right?

I tried my Breadwinner G-Road set up as an upright MTB sort of bike and didn't really like it that way. Back to its original form, and it's a hoot on the local trails. A month from now this will be a lot of orange and gold. Meanwhile, blue skies, mid-70's, and calm winds make for perfect cycling.

At some point, someone is going to need to post a Rivendell given the circumstances, but here are my three non-Rivendells over the past week. In reverse order:

Today I rode my Raleigh Twenty from the auto shop to work, and then from work to home since my car won't be ready today (total 26 km)
This past weekend I rode my Stooge Scrambler to a coastal island to camp with some friends, rode around the island, then home two days later (total 120km)
The weekend before I rode my Crust Wombat on a 60km, 1200m mixed terrain ride that was so much more difficult than I expected.

I will strive to ride one of my Rivs this weekend and get a good photo! We had some rain on the weekend during the camping trip but today was the first day that I felt an unquestionably autumn breeze - sweater weather is near!!

These photos show landscapes that look like mountain rainforest, except for the mountains. Like highland Kenya or Rwanda.

We got some late-monsoon rain here last week and the week before, in otherwise drought-plagued ABQ, NM, 3-4 evenings of steady rain (off and on for up to 4 hours hours instead of the usual 15 min deluges), so much so that the Rio Grande is now flowing again, albeit at ~6-12” deep, after having dried up for ~10 miles through the city last month. We’re even getting weeds in our xeriscaping. Temps have dropped to the low 80s and afternoon humidity has soared above 30% — icky! But during todays’ 20 mile out ’n’ back to the Balloon Fiesta Park the return headwind was refreshingly cool for that reason. (Temps — high desert differentials — have dropped to 50*F at the pre-dawn low.)

That 20 must have the widest bars in the Universe for a bike of that sort. It’s the one that most held my eye.

Sorry, no photos of my bikes recently, Rivendell or otherwise, but will try to remember to take some and post.

The PPPKN-10 (Probable Peugeot PKN-10, based on 'net research, catalogs from the great bikeboompeugeot.com, and the Francophiles at the Classic & Vintage forum on bikeforums.net,) on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. When CalTrans rebuilt the eastern span after the 1989 earthquake, they put in a bike lane. Which only goes about 2/3rds of the way across the Bay, from Oakland to Treasure Island, so I don't really know why thy bothered.

But they did, and I rode on it, and here's the bike on the bridge:

Bay_Bridge.jpg

It's a neat ride. (And riding on the bridge is interesting, too.) Pretty steady ~3-4% grade westbound, but that just means 2 and a quarter miles of tailwind downhill once you turn around. Hit the drops and hammer... 25+ is easy. Just keep your eyes out for the expansion joints. They've got these little cover things over them. Not much, but tall enough that you want to scoot back and lighten the front wheel before you hit 'em.

About 15 miles out and back from my apartment in Northgate Oakland. (25th & Telegraph, for those who both know and care. Which is pretty much me.)

An Appaloosa to show that this group still rides Rivendells. Bars higher than normal because I'm riding with a bum shoulder. Seen in my studio/office because beyond the commute, I'm not getting many miles at the moment.

Good luck with your shoulder rehab, Eric. I had procedures on my left that escalated during the scope approach and became an open surgery with GA. My recovery included both motivations and hard objectives that were not forecast when I needed to have it done.

Meanwhile, I had the time last week to take a favorite 80-mile ride on the GAP to Ohiopyle for the night and back the next day. Beautiful, clear weather topping at 81°F. The only downside was the dry, deadfall leaves from our summer-end drought on the path. I kept getting one up my front fender, making that speed-varied buzz. Several passing cyclists looked as if that was an electric motor sound.

Ted, a Ram and a Chapman. Now that's a nice pairing. How far are you going on the Trace? It looks like you're packing fairly light.

Ran into another Atlantis owner over the weekend on the C&O towpath. A friend and I were heading to Harpers Ferry from Virginia, the other group was heading to DC and started their multi day trip in Pittsburgh.

The air is starting to feel more crisp, though yesterday was still a beautifully sunny, warm day. Got a 45km ride in on the Hillborne, joining a social ride for much of it.

Lately, I've been putting my 3yo daughter in the trailer (outfitted with 2.1" knobbies!!!!) behind my Appaloosa and taking her down level gravel roads closed off to cars. The doggo comes and everyone is smiling. This is a sweet spot where the high conifer country transitions into juniper, pine, and oak woodlands.

This is located along an aqueduct in the south Cascade mountains that is known as an amazing locals riding spot. I had the fortune to live a few miles away from this during the pandemic and enjoyed many peaceful miles of gravel while the world was shut down. Fortunately, we are still only a short drive away.

Crossing the headwaters of Lardeau River at the spawning grounds of the world's largest rainbow trout- the Gerrard. They spawn in April/May, but now the river is full of Kokanee salmon. The Lardeau is a wild, beautiful river in the Kootenays, BC.

Today was the Autumnal Equinox so I rode along the waterfront to watch the sunset over the Golden Gate. Fall is here.

Ted,

While not as content awesome as your Chapman/Rambouillet Nachez Trace/Tennessee River shot, I offer my humble ode to steel:

Autumn is officially here, and the days have shortened to "go for an after-work ride to enjoy the sunset" length. I'm not complaining, these are among my favourite rides - still enough light to get reasonably far from home, but fleeting enough that I get to enjoy the failing light and some darkness on my ride back - which makes me feel all the more alive, for some reason.

New to me 60cm Platypus I picked up from Paul here on the list pictured here on the Atlanta Beltline Westside section. Billie bars are the only thing that's up for a change, as everything else here is how I imagined my dream build.

Gorgeous bike, Drew, and you've got a fine setup for rambling around with enough room for impromptu campouts if need be. Out of curiosity, what is your PBH. I'm curious what a Platy would look like with the seat post setup for a 93PBH.

Cheers, John

Drew, nice looking Platy (I'm suddenly seized with Motolite envy!)

Curious what you're considering as an alternate to the Bille bar? I've had one on my Platypus for a couple of years now and have been pleased with it, though I I like the look of the Choco bars and maybe might give them a try eventually.

Thanks John! My PBH is 84cm, but I'm 6 ft tall. So the reach on the Platy is ideal for my long torso. I've got a basket I can throw on the front too for overnights. Will's 60cm Plat is set up for a 96cm pbh(according to the blue lug visit video) so that's pretty close to where a 930mm PBH would be.

Thanks Steve! I've got Moth bars on my other Riv and I love the sweep back paired with the width(745mm!). Either thinking about the Simworks Ramble bar, Moth bar when it's back in stock, or the new Riv bar when it's out.

Russ, It was great meeting you on the C&O!  What a treasure that trail is.  Others, I was riding towards DC with 3 friends and we stopped at a crowded rest area.  Russ and a friend were riding the other way.  As they were passing through, suddenly Russ yelled out to his friend he had to stop.  I figured he'd spotted the outhouses but then he says "Whose Atlantis is this?"  We had a great time getting photos and chatting.

Russ, was there an open campground at Harpers Ferry?

Two of my friends were on custom O'Leary's out of Santa Fe, NM.  They got no attention and were wondering WTH about all the commotion for our Atlanti.

had a nice Monday afternoon riding around on some of the local trails. Lots of roots, rocks, and downed trees. Feeling totally dialed in. Here’s a shot of the Platypus under the dappled forest light:

Getting some autumn colour setting in around the local woods now.  Won't be too long before the ground is fully covered in big leaf maple leaves, and the rocks and roots will lurk as surprises underneath. This will be my last update for Sept, but October is just around the corner!

September means spring here in Australia, and I couldn’t help but stop and take a photo with these wisteria in full bloom.

Still haven’t had the bars re-wrapped on the Roadini. I’ve all but decided to stick with the 70mm stem though, now that I’m using TRP RRL levers instead of the larger/longer Microshift Sword.

Last night of September.

Sunset at Point State Park, the midpoint of the Tuesday coffee shop night ride. Not the finale, one more next week, then the "dark roast" weekly evening rides begin.

The fountain has been off all summer as part of the construction of upgrades to the park.  Seems weird for a law firm to be on the Mount Washington sign, not Bayer or Iron City. The long-standing backdrop for everyone's fountain shots at the junction forming the Ohio had been Iron City and Bayer.

Dan, what a nicely put together Roadini. Pretty setting with the wisteria. There is an abundance of it in the southeast of the US but I haven’t seen a bunch this well tended.
