So I kinda impulse bought the last Nigel Smythe saddle bag Riv had on web specials...I am more velvet underground grimey than er um insert classy tweedish band here I can't think of one off hand. any way it is a no return kida deal so I am gonna see if anyone here is interested. it's currently sitting in my closet unopened in the box Riv used to ship it. I'm asking 200 $ shipped. it cost me just shy of 160$ after tax and shipping. and I figure since we are all pals here you wouldn't mind springing for a decent 12er of beer so i can wash the regret away and the rest is shipping...let me know.

Thanks,
Richard

Geez. To each their own and all that, but I gotta say: Buying something special and rare and then trying to make a profit off other list members doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth.

nope numbers are right. didn't set out to scalp it or try to make what maybe a whopping a 15-20$ "profit". I got better stuff to do with my time than waste it on endevors like that. No one here ever impulse buy anything...then decide not my jam. I dont hate the bag and would just as soon keep it than lose money on it. if I were actually trying to make money on it I'd put it up on ebay for a heinous sum or up for bid with all the sniping jackyls. just thought i'd offer it up here if anyone is interested. I disclosed what I paid and reasonable shipping will be around 20$ ish i assume, so yep caught me! my get rich scheme has been foiled!perhaps consider it a courtisy fee...people get paid to stand in line for stuff these days!) toothpaste helps wash bad tastes out of the mouth, but I'd recommend the good and not super CHEAP kind. what target you at charging 50 cents more per tube than wal-Mart you scalpers you!LOL come on guys really!? Jim if this is some kinda outrage or crime against list rules let me know I will remove post no problemo.

Hey Richard,

If you aren't looking to make money on it then why not offer to sell it for what you paid plus the actual cost of shipping?

I see you saying you aren't looking to profit, and then I see you selling something for more than you paid. It's confusing.

Shipping should be under $14.00, so anything above that up to the $200 is profit. He wants extra cash for...I don't have a clue. This is a strange request, in my opinion.

Richard,

While I appreciate your transparency with pricing, I disagree with your logic. You are also more than free to price your item for what you think it's worth.

And yes, we've most certainly all bought something on a whim and then decided it wasn't for us. I did this last week, and now I have a $40 derailleur that I'm not going to use for my a build, and I'll be lucky to get 50% of what I paid for it back. So it goes.

But in the end, your bag is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. You were willing to pay $160 for it. Someone may go $200.

I am not interested in the bag, so any set price is of no concern to me.

If I was interested in the bag, I would offer you what I was willing to pay for it, so I can find no fault in your asking price since I would pay no more than that regardless. It is not the sellers job to make me feel good about buying something.

Interesting response from folks, if Richard had not listed his original price (which i don't think he needed to do) would the reactions be the same?  We're talking about an item that is not made anymore--and has not been made for quite a long time.  The question shouldn't be if it's icky that richard is making a few bucks off this, but whether you think a NOS NS Tweed Country Bag is worth $200 shipped.

As many of you do, i use the list to sell parts that i bought and didn't use or bought on impulse.  More often than not i take a small loss on it, but every now and then i do make a few bucks because i bought low or found something on closeout.  I price items at the going rate (or what i think it is), if its too high i lower it, too low and it sells quickly.  Isn't that how its supposed to work?  Am i really 'taking advantage' of someone on the list if i get more than what i paid for it?

Maybe i should start throwing away the receipts for all my purchases so i don't remember what i paid for things i resell.

With the internet it's pretty easy to establish a selling or going price for bikes and components. In an auction they do add a buyers premium or penalty for a purchase. Just me but if listed something on this forum I would not add in a grater profit since it is the forum versus a pure financial vehicle such as eBay

I tend to do this as well - if I'm offering something up to this, or the iBob list, it's almost never for a profit, if so it's in the few dollars range, and in many cases it's at a loss or as a "pay-it-forward" transaction. When I have something that I know could turn a profit and help fund further bike interests, I typically turn to other venues - these are often items that I would tend to think wouldn't be of interest to the audience of said lists anyhow. I've historically funded my bike hobby, to the point where I fully funded brand-new complete bikes, by flipping bikes on Craigslist - hipsters pay a tax there, for a cleaned up and stripped down single speed or fixie conversion, and I keep the parts I stripped off for future builds or for recycling to this community. There are few transaction I make to bring new items in that haven't been self-funded this way, and I think it's nice to pass on the extra bits that I might have to other enthusiasts here in this community for a fair price and with a clear conscience. I suppose I may have been taken advantage of on some occasions, but if so, I haven't felt it in any way.

LOL! you all are strange. Perhaps less time on the internet in a state of mental moral high ground and in the real world. My number was up there if you didn't see the humor or like the pricing or worried someone would make a red cent on something so morally reprehensible you coulda called and asked what's up. if you really wanted the bag, you coulda called or txted if thats to big a step for ya and said I'm a cheapskate kinda person who wouldn't buy his pal a beer if he were stranded in the Sahara and dying of thirst (but I happen to love kinda expensive bike crap) can you send the bag for what it cost and shipping. since I'm not an internet "richard" id of easily said sure but we couldn't be friends. I gonna leave this up here for shots n giggles and perhaps as a warning to who ya might want to or not deal with (myself included in that)...if you are local socal and interested in the bag hit me up. your welcome to it for what I paid which is what you woulda paid anyway. I will ask ya ta buy me a beer on principal, perhaps a ride to talk about bikes and other cool shit velvits, stooges, BRMC, BJM,MMA,BJJ,fringe,x files any one?... this Truly was one of the dumbest threads ever. if ever i go to sell anything here again I will make sure to include plenty of Golly Gee, Awe Shucks, and you know my money is going right back to Riv !) I will also make sure I am losing ample amounts of money on said stuff as to please the internet gods. Gosh (said in N Dynamite voice)this will be difficult though, as I will have to take my I voted for Trump t shirt off first !)

Richard I guess you confused everyone as to your asking price.  You said I'm asking 200 $ shipped. it cost me just shy of 160$ after tax and shipping.  So this reads as $200 and not the under $160  (your cost)you now say you intended to sell it for.  You can understand the disconnect.  Good luck with your local sale!

Ugh....
The idea that it's somehow more common in the real world to tell a person that you paid less for an item than what you are charging them, when does that ever happen?
Also, for me, the idea that someone new has to reimburse your past shipping cost because you didn't like what you chose to buy, and then has to also pay their own shipping.... the logic is just frustrating, man. Why does someone owe you 20$ of beer whenever you buy something you don't want?

I have to agree with Garth on this one. If I wanted the bag bad enough I'd pay what Richard was asking. Asking being the key word here,  if I didn't want it for $200 I'd offer up what it was worth to me and he could take it or leave it. Win, lose or draw I wouldn't get to rattled about it either way.

I think "tacky" best describes the actual price offered and then "increasingly douche-y" the tone of the OP's posts.  Can't imagine wanting to have a beer with anyone based on that.  Most of the responses seem pretty level-headed and calm to me, which is one of the reasons I like this group so much.

While I agree with Nick on all points, everybody would have gotten through their day just fine if they just didn't buy the OP's bag if they didn't want it.  Nothing productive comes from people posting WHY they aren't going to buy the OP's tweed bag.  If the OP's price is out of line for any reason, his FS post will drift into oblivion on the list, with no harm done.

I am sure there a lot of people on this list who have made money selling an Atlantis, Ram, Rom, Bleriot, Sam, or some other frame on this list. The prices have gone up and up and the prices have been adjusted accordingly. I see nothing wrong with asking more than you paid for something and I think I smell hypocrisy with all the protest.

It does seem a bit strange to say what you paid and then ask for more. That seems a sure fire way to upset the we-are-all-friends-here vibe of the list but if you are not interested then why respond?!?!

Cheers,
Chris

I responded because this is an opinion forum and I have an opinion on this rancid bullcrap. And I reject the assertion that a lot of us have made a profit on an old Rivendell. The general trend from new-to-older is the price drops a bit to each successive owner, even with something like an early-2000s Atlantis. You might get away with a profit sale on eBay, but most of us here know what an old Atlantis went for new, and don't try to jack up the price as if we just bought the new/improved frame.

I've lost a boatload of money on sales here because I would rather take the "I used it for a while" hit, and let somebody else get a good deal on it. Because karma and whatnot.

I have bought and sold a SimpleOne and a Bleriot. I have for sure not broken even on either of those.

If profit is the motive that's fine. At least we know his markup is shockingly low which makes me think business acumen isn't the strong suit. Which then begs the question why share the initial cost as it's sure to rub people the wrong way, proving interpersonal isn't the strong suit.

Then there's the booze.

A forum I was on a long time ago was run by amsome militant straight edge kids and PWI (posting while intoxicated) was verboten. Perhaps that would have saved some embarassmwnt and chastising here?

Grant just listed his definitely-not-new 1999 Atlantis frameset for $1100. I think retail was $900-ish in 1999 but would need to go back and check to be sure. It's a fair price in comparison to a new one but not in comparison to what it cost when new. I didn't hear anyone cry foul. I've also seen similar prices for older frames on this forum. There was a Glorious/ Wilbury new in the box for $2300 not too long ago. Again, I didn't hear anyone cry foul.

A new larger bag from Rivendell is $200+, so I don't see why $200 is out of line. And I definitely don't see why people are upset about it.

A NIB Glorius/Wilbury frame is $3500 now, and I don't remember an Atlantis ever being under $1200. My recollection is it hit 1500 and climbing pretty quick.

That is about right Christopher for the original Atlantis price as in 1999. I still remember the original brochure of it. The presale price may have even been 850, I'm nkt positive as I parted with all the Riv brochures I had. I could have bought one but decided on a local custom frame instead that very year.

From what pics I have seen of GP's older frames I would not want one regardless of the price based on condition, so asking 1.1 grand is way way much in my estimation. Who may have owned it does not matter to me, it is just a used frame.

I found it the Atlantis brichure on Jim's site. 950 smackers it was.
One thing also few remember was the very original ones were longer in TT and front center. They changed them after that first run.

Love the clip. What's funny is that Andy Warhol (the one of the other Andys from Pittsburgh) promoted and produced Reed using his "Exploding Plastic Inevitable" events, a literal sentiment not rare to this forum. He filmed and collected screen tests of regulars at his Factory:  https://youtu.be/Avme-hIBncI

Warhol reiterates his fascination with individuals and effort to capture the actual experience of living, which isn't too far from the common vein here either.
