If these weren't brand new I'd replace it without second thought but the thought of chucking a $70 tire with such low milage on it makes my inner cheapskate go crazy. What say the wisdom of the group? Replace or not? http://goo.gl/2AY9i

Patch the tire itself.  Keep an eye on it.   No way I would throw it away either.

I wouldn't hesitate to ride that tire. I probably wouldn't do anything to patch it even, but if a patch gives you more confidence, do it.

In the two years I've been riding Hetres I've had several similar gashes with no ill effects. Generally, they've been caused by very small pieces of glass--or the gash somehow came first and the glass got in--and so I've had to get tweezers and pull the glass out. But the gash itself has never caused a problem or grown bigger. I say: ride on.

I'd say only ride it on the rear.

Good idea to patch the tire.  Even if it's a little square of duck tape.  You couldn't run that cut with a latex tube - it would blow right through.

Thanks everyone. Guess I was overreacting. I went ahead and applied a boot and remounted it.

Boot that for sure!  I carry a tiny square of tyvek in my kit as an emergency boot.  Many of us have used a dollar bill as a boot.

I was cycling with my brother in Switzerland a few years back, and he got a cut in the side-wall of his tyre big enough for my little finger to fit through. I asked if he had a banknote on him, and he produced a 200 franc note, which I used to boot the tyre. We only re-inflated it to about 30 psi as even with the boot, the cut was bulging a bit at that pressure. The tyre lasted the rest of the day and quite a few more kilometres until we got to a town with a bike shop, but he got a bit worried towards the end of the day when I suggested that maybe the squirming around of the tyre due to the low pressure was gradually wearing all the print off his banknote - 200 francs equates to about $215.
