Iron on patches

I have always stitched patches on things. I had a weird morning where I ordered some patches to put on my saddlesack. Anyone ironed on a waxed bag? Does it muss anything up? I should probably still put some stitches anyway, correct?

I have ironed-on a patch to my waxed Baggins Adam saddlebag. It was a bit tricky. Wanted to slide around as the wax melted. I would think stitches would be better for a long-term relationship, although the patch has stayed put for a month now.

put a dry towel over the patch and bag before ironing.  I did this when putting a patch onto a waxed satchel and it worked with no mess.  I did sew it in place once I had it ironed where I wanted it to be though...YMMV

I have used Shoe Goo silicone adhesive, then stitched the patch down at a couple strategic places.  The Speedy Stitcher works great for that sort of thing.

I am a patch....ummmm....nerd. I get tired of looking at the same ol' patch.......So I put a (loop) velcro panel on my handlebar bag so I can swap out patches. I use peel and stick (hook- ten lb. stuff, lower profile) on the back of the patches and swap 'em out as desired. I have put velcro on the back of ... ummmm... well....sixteen patches. Rotating art. Nerd. Weird.

I don't have the bag, but since it's waxed, I wouldn't do it.  You need the iron hot--hot enough to melt the glue on the patch so that it bonds with the material-- which I imagine would be hot enough to damage the wax. 

I've done lots of iron on patches and they do work very well, as long as well applied (heat up the material receiving the patch first, then put lots of pressure and lots of heat.  Then, I put a little more pressure and heat around the edges.  Works well, but I wouldn't do it on a waxed bag.

I tried it and it not only didn't stick, the heat discolored the bag. Don't do it.

Les, they are the original WTB dirtdrops from way back. I think I bought them new in the late eighties or early nineties. They are heat treated so I am pretty sure Nitto made them. I like them ok. I have gone through a bunch of bars, and still haven't found the perfect one yet. My perfect bar? I want the sweep back of the Noodle, combined with a shallow drop that has a wide flare such as the WTB, and with the flats and drops near parallel. Oh, and wide! Not Crust bar wide, but wide. And electronic anti-carpal tunnel devices...as long as I am wishing.

Fabric glue should work well on a waxed canvas.
