Hi folks,

Thought I’d share my first Riv build.

For some back story, I love all types of cycling. I spend much of my time riding my aero road bike. I know, I know, essentially the antithesis of Rivendell, but I can’t deny the fact that I love crushing my legs and going for PBs on my electronic shifting race bike. I also love going on long rides on my gravel bike, toeing the line between living and bonking. I even had a weight weenie phase where I built a 4.something kg bike and spent hours riding up and down hills. That last phase has (thankfully) long past.

In recent years, I’ve learned to appreciate leaving my Garmin behind and going on slower rides. I’ve been riding a Velo Orange Neutrino and a New Albion Privateer for a few years now and have very much enjoyed my time on more relaxed rides. I’ve built and sold dozens of eclectic bikes over the years and this has ultimately let me to Rivendell. An Atlantis has been a dream bike for me for a while now and I finally decided to pull the trigger on one.

I ended up canniballizing several of my bikes for their best parts and putting them towards this build. A lovely gentleman in town sold me his (unfortunately) totalled Surly with many very fancy parts for an insane deal several years ago. As such, I am very fortunate to have the Paul mini motos/levers, Nitto racks, and Sackville bag on this build. I must say that I am very happy with how the build turned out, particularly the felt grips wrapped in Blue Lug tape, finished with walnut bar-end plugs that I spun on my lathe. I chose to have some fairly high gearing, probably a bit atypical for a Riv build, because I still do love having the option of going fast and having something to push against.

I took the rig out for a couple rides just in time before the snow hits here in Alberta, Canada and it truly rides like a dream. Very stable but also quite nimble in turns. I think the build is pretty much near perfect for me but at some point I think I would like to try some Bosco bars perhaps. I also can't help but dream about having an Onyx silent rear hub. Overall, I am ecstatic to have this bike.

Looking forward to more rides on this beautiful machine.

Hello David! Lovely build. As a fellow Privateer -> Atlantis owner, I certainly understand where you're coming from. I also run mini-v's too (tektro RX6)!

Happy riding,
Nick in Falls Church VA

David: What is your gearing on the very nice Atlantis?

And I vote for hand-turned walnut bar plugs as the best accessory of 2025.

I forgot to ask: what is your real-life cycling season in Alberta? I lived in Kebec, PQ for 5 years and the cycling season was very truncated.

Nick, the Privateer was an awesome bike but the Atlantis is definitely in a whole of it's own. The Minimotos are awesome but I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable running anything larger than the 48mm Gravelkings I have currently.

Patrick, thanks! The bar plugs were a blast to make and surprisingly simple to do. A photo attached! Gearing is 48/34 up front and 11-34 in the back. Pretty hilly here in Calgary, AB but the 1:1 climbing gear gets the job done. Our cycling season is also pretty truncated with winter essentially taking up 50% of the year. We get smoke from forest fires for a few weeks over the summer which makes riding less than ideal. But other than that, riding season is amazing for a small portion of the year.

Beautiful Atlantis, David. I just completed building one up as well, or should say my awesome local shop did :-)

Just killer, David. I love mine. I hope you get to put countless miles on that bike.
