First things first...as a long-suffering IU fan, having a team enter the league as "Dusty May's Champions" is just a huge dagger right into the middle of my gut. But as it seems like Jim is a real good addition to the league, I'm just going to have to grin and bear looking at the name whenever I look at the standings. Or just be at peace knowing IU football hired Curt Cignetti, and not Sherrone Moore.
Now for the game. Riverside started out pretty sharp, and were ahead 24-17. Alonzo Mourning committed a foul, and given his propensity for picking up back-to-back fouls, I rushed him to the bench quickly. The Champions responded by reeling off 10 straight points, and they scored 16 in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the 1st quarter to take a 33-30 lead at the break. The 2nd quarter was a disaster for Riverside. We couldn't throw it in the ocean, and the Champions quickly had the lead up to 47-34. That extended to 16 points late in the quarter, before we closed it to a 62-50 lead at the break.
Like the UM team for which the Champions are named, this team can put up some points, and we needed to figure out how to slow them down if we were going to have any chance to come back. And though we didn't really figure anything out, the Champions offense slowed anyway, and they only managed 21 points in the 3rd as we closed the lead to 83-81 at the 3rd break. The 4th quarter was a slugfest, with teams trading buckets, but the Champions were having an easier time getting their buckets as John Stockton was twirling one dazzler after another. Unfortunately for the Champions, with them leading 96-94 at the 6:29 mark, the Ollies went on a 10-0 run, with the Champions remarkably committing three charging fouls in just over two minutes.
The Champions weren't done though, and from the 2:08 mark to the 0:48 mark, they came charging back to cut the lead to 106-103. But Bryant Stith was fouled and hit two free throws, and the Champions could not connect again, and we hit four more free throws to close it out 112-103.
Riverside shot 51% from the field, but missed all 7 three-point attempts, and that has pretty much been the pattern at home lately. We also outscored the Champions on the fast break by a count of 44-2. Mourning finished with 30 points, 17 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots! Gary Payton (12-18 FG) had 24 points and 13 assists. Mitch Richmond (7-7 FT) had 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Champions had seven double-figure scorers, but their high scorer, Penny Hardway had just 17 points. Shawn Bradley had 14 points and 9 rebounds. Stockton had 10 assists. Clyde Drexler had 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, but suffered through a 3-16 shooting game. His shooting performance, along with Stockton's 0-10 (combined 3-26) went a long toward helping Riverside bring this one home.
