An application for a loan to an undergraduate must be approved by a department head and the chapter president, recording secretary, and treasurer. Loans are available to new members for the amount of the initiation fee. Notes must be co-signed by financially independent persons, such as a parent. Application forms are on the website.

Until 1950, student loans were limited to $250 per borrower and were available only to undergraduates. The 1950 Convention included graduate students and increased the loan limit to $500. The 1979 Convention raised the limit to $1,000, the 1996 to $2,500.

The major source of funds for loans is the resource of the prepaid BENT subscription account. A sizable sum of money, which eventually will be used to pay publication costs, would ordinarily lie idle until then. Making it available to undergraduate members in need was the idea of the Executive Council in 1931.

A permanent Student Loan Fund was established by the Executive Council in 1950 by transferring $3,500 from the unappropriated surplus to the new fund. This fund, while supplementing the present major source of loan money, is growing to significant importance because one-half of all interest collected on loan notes is being added to the fund. Since inauguration of the program in 1935, 1,784 loans have been made totaling more than $862,675.

Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont) on Friday released the following statement applauding the Biden-Harris Administration and the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the official export credit agency of the U.S., for investing in Vermont-based job growth with a $169 million export promotion loan to BETA Technologies:

The U.S. Department of Education on Friday launched a beta test of its student debt relief application website. About 95% of Americans with student debt are expected to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Biden administration's plan.

Those who use the beta site will not need to reapply again after the full launch, the department said. However, "there's no advantage to applying before the full launch," the department wrote on the website.

President Biden announced in August that his administration is canceling up to $20,000 in student loan debt for millions of Americans. Nearly 20 million people will be eligible to have their debt fully canceled under the new plan.

Loan scammers even use fake company logos, false caller ID numbers and other tricks to impersonate legitimate agencies and gain trust. In offering you a loan, their goal is to do one or more of the following:

Scammers often promise they can get rid of your debt. In fact, student loan forgiveness scams were rampant during the pandemic, and one scam company defrauded borrowers out of over $1.7M by pretending to be affiliated with the Department of Education.

Some auto dealerships offer in-house lending, meaning they both sell vehicles and provide auto loans. These dealerships often advertise that creditworthiness is no problem, and they appeal to customers based on the convenience of buying and getting a loan all in one spot.

The application for SAVE will only be available periodically during the beta launch. FSA encourages borrowers to test the website. If a borrower is able to complete their application they will not be required to resubmit it once the site goes live. Applicants will also receive an email confirmation once they have successfully applied.

The application to receive President Joe Biden's student loan cancellation opened on Friday evening for beta testing. Over the last several days, borrowers have been able to begin submitting their application ahead of the official launch, which is expected sometime later this month.

In an email, the Department of Education (ED) invited eligible borrowers to serve as testers and submit their applications to receive $10,000 to $20,000 of student loan cancellation. Applications submitted during this testing period will be processed when the site officially launches later this month, ED states.

"Those borrowers will not need to reapply if they submit their application during the beta test, but no applications will be processed until the site officially launches later this month," an ED spokesperson told CNN. "This testing period will allow the Department to monitor site performance through real-world use, test the site ahead of the official application launch, refine processes, and uncover any possible bugs prior to official launch." This information was confirmed with NASFAA in a pre-launch briefing on Friday afternoon.

When the site does officially launch, it will remain open until Dec. 31, 2023. ED recommends borrowers submit their application by November 15 to receive relief before the pause on student loan repayments ends on Dec. 31, 2022.

"We encourage financial aid administrators to communicate with their current and past borrowers and encourage them to fill out the application as soon as possible, while also tempering any frustrations borrowers may feel if the form is unavailable at certain times," said NASFAA President and CEO Justin Draeger. "We've already seen multiple confirmed submissions from borrowers who said they completed the application in just a few minutes. If any borrowers miss the beta window, the Department has confirmed that their intent is to process any and all borrowers who submit their applications when processing begins."

Last week, the White House released a detailed preview of the application to receive student loan relief. The beta test application requests borrowers to submit their name, Social Security number, birthdate, phone number, and email address.

Borrowers will also need to sign an agreement that if requested, they'll provide proof of income to ED. If a borrower fails to provide proof of income by March 31, 2024 if requested, or if a borrower's income does not qualify for federal student loan debt relief, the relief will not be processed, ED states.

A confirmation email for the beta test states that ED will process the borrower's application. Unless the borrower hears back from ED or their loan servicer, they won't have to take any other action. ED will reach out to borrowers who need additional information to process their application, including to verify their income or their parents' income if they were a dependent student between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

Part of the basis for approving the loan is that Beta Technologies has current and potential customers in the Asia-Pacific region and among Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity member states. These are located in countries including India, New Zealand, Japan, and Canada.

Beta Technologies, the electric aircraft manufacturer based in South Burlington, has been singled out by the Biden Administration for a $169 million loan to help finance the company's new manufacturing facility on Williston Road at the Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport.

The loan was made by the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) in part because of Beta's growth, and because of current and potential customers the company has in countries such as New Zealand, India, Japan and Canada. In five years, Beta has gone from a handful of employees to 600, with 400 in Vermont, as of October 2023.

In a statement, Clark said Beta is excited to partner with the U.S. Export-Import Bank as part of its Make More in America Initiative, designed to unlock financing for American manufacturing with loans for companies with the potential to export their products.

The Department of Education's test application is a long-awaited first step of the policy announced in late August, allowing people with federal student loans to apply for up to $20,000 of debt relief, depending on what kind of financial aid they received and how much money they make.

During the beta testing period, according to a department spokesperson, borrowers will be able to submit applications for the student debt relief program and won't need to reapply if they submit their application during the beta test.

Borrowers should apply before mid-November in order to see their loans canceled by the time the pause on student loan payments lifts on Jan. 1, 2023, the White House has said. That pause has been in place since the beginning of the pandemic. The application for debt relief will also close at the end of the year, sunsetting on Dec. 31, 2023.

The application rollout comes as the policy has been challenged multiple times in court, largely by conservative organizations and states who argue that the Biden administration doesn't have the authority to cancel student loan debt.

The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) says the test applications will help smooth out the process when the official form goes live. Those who submit a beta application will not need to resubmit later.

Some borrowers have worried about student loan forgiveness happening at all, given the delay between the announcement of the relief program, which was made at the end of August, and the application launch.

Square today announced the beta launch of new banking and spend management solutions for its U.S. sellers, including new credit tools and features that help businesses simplify their cash flow management and consolidate their finances.

Both Square Credit Card and the new loan options are currently in beta but have seen strong usage already, including among upmarket sellers. Since these products entered beta, 25% of Credit Card spend and 30% of originations from loans with fixed monthly payments have come from upmarket sellers.

In August, President Joe Biden announced his decision to cancel up to $10,000 in student loan debt for individuals making less than $125,000 a year or as much as $20,000 for eligible borrowers who were also Pell Grant recipients.

During the beta testing period, borrowers will be able to submit applications for the student debt relief program and won't need to reapply if they submit their application during the beta test, a spokesperson for the Department of Education told ABC News.
