Note that I have 2 different USB card readers with the correct size slot for the microSD card but could neither format the card with either nor copy files to the card using them. I would either get a failuer to format message or my PC would lock up requiring me to use Task Manager to kill the process.

One day I decided to plug it into a cheap camera. The camera said something to the tune of "memory card error" and it reformatted my card to only have 32GB space. (lost everything immediately! I would not recommend using that camera...)

Anyways, I've taken the card out of the camera and want to put it back into my phone, but it is now formatted to have 1 32GB partition and I cannot see any other partitions using the windows 7 disk manager.

The SD Formatter was created specifically for memory cards using the SD/SDHC/SDXC standards. It is strongly recommended to use the SD Formatter instead of formatting utilities provided with operating systems that format various types of storage media. Using generic formatting utilities may result in less than optimal performance for your memory cards.

The SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards have a "Protected Area" on the card for the SD standard's security function. The SD Formatter does not format the "Protected Area". Please use appropriate application software or SD-compatible device that provides SD security function to format the "Protected Area" in the memory card.

I don't know how my card got in such a rut, but putting it into the win7 / win8 computer with various combinations of MicroSD card reader, SD card reader + adaptor, or through my GoPro did not cause the card to appear at all (whereas it was a few days ago). Therefore both of the above answers were not an option (the card did not show up in windows, nor with the SD Formatter utility).

Sounds like the camera resized the SD card's partition. Windows has a built-in partition editor that you can use to fix this. With the card plugged into your computer, click Start, type partition, and choose "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions." You should see a list of all the different volumes on your computer. One of them should be the 32GB SD card partition. Right click it, and choose "Extend Volume." There will be an item called "Maximum available space in MB." Type that value into "Select the amount of space in MB." Then follow the wizard to its completion.

SD Card Formatter is a simple and basic formatted which is designed to be used with SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. The application itself isn't too different from the format utility included with Windows and includes two modes: Quick format and Overwrite format. CHS format size adjustment is the only other option.Once the appropriate card and volume label has been selected, the format can begin after hitting "Format". That's all there is to it.It is strongly recommended to use the SD Memory Card Formatter to format SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards rather than using formatting tools provided with individual operating systems.Compatibility and LicenseSD Card Formatter is provided under a freeware license on Windows from hard drive formatters with no restrictions on usage. Download and installation of this PC software is free and 5.0.2 is the latest version last time we checked.

If you really need to format the uSD cards, pull them out and put in either a working camera or a PC to format.
HOWEVER, there is almost never a need to format the uSD cards in the cameras. I have 28 Wyze camera - all of which have uSD cards that are set for continuous recording. I think I could count the number of times I have formatted any of them on the fingers of one hand, with spares.

What does it show? It should show close to what the card size is after a format (roughly, no one quotes what it is after formatting, which takes space). After some time IF the camera is set to record to the SD card, then the space available should start shrinking. But if you format it 1,000 times in a row, it will always show the same space after formatting, so not much info in that statement.

It is able to format large disk partition such as 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 2TB drive at most to FAT32 file system successfully in Windows 11, 10, 8, 7. Free download this SD card formatter fat32. Then, connect your SD card to your computer and follow the steps below to format the large partition to FAT32.

After finishing all the steps listed above, you will be able to successfully format the SD card to FAT32 in Windows, no matter how large it is. Morever, if the current file system of the SD card is NTFS, you can use "Convert to NTFS/FAT32" feature to directly convert the NTFS file system to FAT32 without formatting\losing data.

How can I format my 64GB SD card to FAT32 for free?
You can only choose a third-party tool to format a 64GB SD card to FAT32 since Windows built-in tools don't support this task. AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard is a free drive formatter, you can free download this tool and format your large drive into FAT32.

Why can't I format my SD card as FAT32?
There are many reasons that will cause this problem. The common reasons are SD card being locked; SD card being set to read-only; large storage SD card. And sometimes, Windows also doesn't recognize the file system of some SD card.

Is there any data loss during the formatting process?
Yes, formatting an SD card will erase all the data stored on it. Before proceeding with the formatting, ensure that you have backed up any important files or data from the SD card to a secure location.

Hi All,
I've used Win32DiskImager to write the OpenWRT bcm27xx Squalshfs image onto a 64Gb MicroSD Card.
I've inserted it into RPI4 and everything work perfectly.
Then I formatted the SD card (deleted all the partitions via Windows Disk Manger so it was all unallocated and formatted it as NTFS).

Then I wrote the image to the SD card again, and to my surprise all the OpenWRT configurations from before the format were saved.
How can this be? Is it related to the hidden F2FS partition? Is there a way to format/reburn the SD card with the default OpenWRT configurations?

quick.
That was my assumption as well, that the bytes stays on the cards, and once the same FS is installed again, it get access to them.
But the config is taken from /etc/config, no? shouldn't these files be re-written while writing the image again?

I was given a 5D Mk2 by a colleague, but it when turned on, it says the CF card needs to be formatted, and when I try to do that through the menu item, it says it cannot format the card, put in another one.

If after trying one or two compatible cards, which are verified working, its safe to assume the problem is with the camera. Sometimes people give their problems away. That might be what's happened here. Repair is probably not worth it. If you want to investigate that, try midwestcamera dot com. Keeping in mind that a used mkII replacement starts at $250 and goes up to about $430

It's a longshot, but this is what I'd try next. It's easy and quick and most importantly FREE! Open your CF cards on your laptop or desktop. Re-forrmat the cards as something other than FAT, like maybe NTFS. Then try to format them in the camera again. If that's still a no-go in the camera, format them again with your desktop as FAT32 and try them again in the camera. Even if all that still doesn't get you anywhere it hasn't cost you much in time and effort. Did I also mention that it's FREE?

CF card is more similar to a memory chip than a random access storage device. It is already pre-formatted. All that you are doing is erasing what may be stored in the memory chip(s) inside the memory card. The formatting process should also identity bad memory locations, and flag them as such..

This is required because you need to format a micro SD card and install an image of the Raspberry Pi Operating System (RPi OS) on it. Disk formatting is the process of preparing a data storage device such as a hard disk drive, solid-state drive, floppy disk or USB flash drive for initial use. In some cases, the formatting operation may also create one or more new file systems. It also erases any previous data on the drive.
