Fresh install of Big Sur + PS 2021 and 2022 - PS can't parse RPP TIFFs

Hi Andrey, et al

I recently performed a fresh install of Big Sur on my 2013 MacPro. I have reloaded pretty much all of my software, including the new PS 2022 version with all of the fancy ACR masking and whatever.

I have loaded the RPP 1922 Beta (I cannot remember what is most current), and it works fine.

I exported a TIFF to PS 2021 and 2022 and both programs give me an error saying that the TIFF cannot be parsed.

Any ideas? I disabled TIFF support for ACR so that the TIFF would just open normally in PS. I even just tried to open TIFFs I made previously with RPP - same error.

Thanks!

Kirk, what exact error does it throw? Does it work with jpegs or other types of TIFF? This can be related to permissions - macOS doesn't allow apps to access random locations by default.

Other TIFs (for example, exported from Capture One) work fine.  The left Get Info window is for the RPP TIFF, the right window is for a Capture One TIF.  I opened the DNG in RPP from the Desktop, and that is where it wrote the TIFF that was automatically opened by PS, throwing the error.

Kirk, I mean different types of TIFF produced by RPP - 8-bit, 16-bit, RGB, Lab and so on. In any case if tiff file can be opened by macOS preview app and cannot be opened by PS this should be discussed with Adobe.
Disabling Copy tags option is another thing to try if you have it enabled.

It is likely a PS thing, as the TIFFs are perfectly fine in Preview and in Affinity Photo. If I bring the TIFF into Preview, crop it and save it, I can open that TIFF in PS.

I tried multiple output profiles and bit depths, no dice. Oh well, I will wait for an update.

THe weird thing is that it happens in PSCC2021 (V22) which is what I have been using for months prior to doing a clean install on my Mac Pro. Now 2021 throws the same error.

To follow up - If I enable “Automatically open all supported TIFFs” in the Camera Raw preferences (Preferences > Camera Raw > File Handling) the TIFF made by RPP will get passed to PS and will open in the Adobe Camera Raw interface.  I can then simply click “Open” in the ACR interface and the TIFF is now opened in the Photoshop editing interface.

Weird.  Also, just as an FYI (it is supposed to work in the following way) when the TIFF from RPP passes through the ACR interface, any output specifications for raw conversion specified in the ACR interface (like the output color space and the bit depth) get applied to the TIFF coming from RPP.  So, if I render the TIFF in RPP in, say, sRGB 16 bit, and send it to PS, it will open in the ACR interface - if I have ACR configured to render raw files into AdobeRGB 16 bit, when I click “Open” for the TIFF in ACR, it will open in PS as AdobeRGB.  Just a heads up for anyone else encountering this issue and using this workaround.

I do not prefer opening TIFFs in PS through the ACR interface, but whatever.  Better than nothing at this point.

Prior to using the ACR workaround, I also tried giving PS “Full Disk Access” in the system’s Security Settings, but it did not change anything, and the error parsing TIFFs in PS still occurred.

Also, now that I think about it - using this extra step in PS (enabling TIFF handling in ACR) might be an inconvenience but it also might be a useful extra step.  While RPP offers several output color profiles, some might want to work in color profiles not included in RPP (like ProPhoto, AdobeRGB, etc).  In that case, you can output from RPP as Lab, and then pass the rendered TIFF to PS, through ACR, where you can specify your desired output color space, like ProPhoto.  The conversion from Lab to ProPhoto will be done in ACR and then opened in PS.

Andrey - I am happy to report that PS 2022 was issued an update today to version 23.0.1. After install, TIFFs from RPP open as expected. Yay!
