Adding passwords from external script using API?

Hello. 

Is it possible to add new password from external sources using the API instead of inserting them automatically in the Database? We use scripts to deploy our VM machines and we will like to include adding new entries in the RatticDB from the script to automate everything. 

I saw in other posts that it can be done using sql insert but if possible I'd like to avoid this approach.
