Following the recent events, I had a discussion with someone who
pointed me to intel's work on UDI (Uniform Driver Interface).

Even though the project has seen no activity since 2003, they did a
significant amount of work on something that we are also doing:
Specifying some common semantics for all OSes. I think it's worth a
shot looking at the specifications they released (as PDF files), and
check if it may not be a workload off our shoulders.
