Heres the problem. When I plug the adapter into the USB port (doesn't matter which one) and load the drivers, the adapter just cycles on and off. Meaning it appears and disappears on the computer constantly at a rate of about once per second. If you have the device manager open, it appears and disappears under network adapters. I've tried every driver I can find... same result. I even let windows choose the driver from Windows update... same. I did a complete system restore (using a different hard drive) back to factory new condition... made no difference. Tried a different adapter, did the same thing. Is there some sort of incompatibility with this presario and the 8187 chipset?
"The Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device."
I worked around this problem by purchasing a powered usb hub from best buy.
I've tried the latest drivers from Realtek as well... I've tried a total of 17 different drivers... new ones, old ones, XP drivers, Vista drivers, win7 drivers. The ones that will load on my system all have the same effect. the constant cycling on and off about once a second.
The ports are working properly. My keyboard and mouse are both USB. I have a Linksys USB adapter that works just fine in any of the ports. It seems to be some sort of incompatibility with the Realek chipset and/or drivers. The 'cycling' effect does not occur until after the drivers are loaded. If you plug the device in without any drivers loaded, it doesn't cycle on and off.
That means that Alfa has produced some drivers that have issues. I would return it for another brand. That is a shame. I had heard the Alfa was supposed to be a pretty good device.I have never used the brand before. Which OS are you using?
I could understand if one of these adapters produced this problem, but three of them? Three different adapters reacted the same when plugged into any of the USB ports. The constant cycling on and off. Could they simply be drawing too much current from the port? They are supposed to be rated at 500ma (different from 1000mw), but who knows?
I am having the same problem as Inon. The adapter worked well after upgrading from win 7 to win 10. However when trying to initially install it on a new win 10 computer the driver update fails every time. AND, I have followed every step exactly MANY times and it still fails.
Old style USB adapters sometimes use more amps than some computers built-in USB supplies. Using a powered hub often takes care of this. There could be another problem but low USB port amp output is a common one.
A lot more options can be made with the alfa utility since windows suck. Ok sorry, things can be done with Windows too using CMD or PowerShell but take few clicks with the utility and few more minutes.

It's not connecting to your wireless router - what is your wireless router?. If it were connected it would show the name of your wireless network - have you set this up in its control panel? (Don't post your wireless network name in any answer.)
my wireless router is realtek WLAN, i installed it. but why it is not showing my realtek WLAN in " network".sorry i am new user of mac. i don't know how i have to set up in control panel ? can you guide me how to set up procudure. thanks i will not post again. actually i am using my friends wireless he is my neighbour Airport on my mac can't catch strongely that's why. thank you.
You would have to set up the wireless connection in the Alfa's controls, rather than in System Preferences, and you would either scan for the network name and join it using the password (if any - and if there isn't one there should be) or enter the network name and password. I'm afraid I can't advise on exactly how to do that - if it's not self-evident it's something you would have to take up with the manufacturers (unless anyone else on here just happens to have the same device).
Hey guys, I went buying this wifi adapter you mentioned a few times, Alfa awus036nha but I can't see it in my Kali. I have a MacBook Pro, with Sierra 10.12.6 and Virtualbox 5.1.30 last version with Kali Linux 2.0 on it. I have the CD with the drivers sent along with the wifi card, but they don't have the awus036nha only other ones that sound similar like awus036nh, awus036nhr, awus036h, etc. and even those are outdated, for macOS 10.11 at best. The Linux folder with drivers has four folders in it. I don't know how to install it and how to see networks. Can you help?
