I've been working with a few glider pilots about getting their FLARM operational and their Contest ID showing up properly on other pilot's display devices (LXNav, Oudie, Clearnav, etc).

There seems to be some basic confusion about how our glider's FLARM device is able to somehow show our contest ID on another glider's display device.   There are three distinct steps;
  • The configuration of the FLARM device via a tool at flarm.com
  • The registration of the FLARM device at flarmnet.org
  • The installation of the latest flarmnet database file on everyone's display device
Here is a presentation that may help us all understand how all this happens.  Please let me know if there are errors/additions/comments/harangues about it.

I like it (nice to have all the pieces together) and plan to pass it on to pilots at the upcoming Cowley Camps.

Nitpicking to come later.

And don't forget registration in the OGN database, so all live tracking systems will also display the correct registration and contest ID. I wrote up instructions here:

So Tim, I have an interesting question for you. I have two gliders registered with OGN. One is registered by me, one by someone else, but all of the info is correct, as far as the hex code, contest number, model number and display choices for both I have sold one of the gliders and it was the one registered by me. The OGN website link you provided will not let me delete my registered glider or let me add the other one to my account as it says its already registered. How do you get the owners changed?

CH ASW27 (owned by me but registered by someone else) and 4R PIK 30 (sold but registered by me)

So several things:
1) Each aircraft physical FLARM device should have their FLARM ID set to be the same as their ICAO transponder code. This will ensure it doesn't alarm with itself if running ADSB and FLARM, and also merges the two items into one on other devices.
2) If it's configured correctly in the OGN database, but is not under your asccount, then it doesn't really matter unless you want to change the privacy settings. You can just leave it as is.
3) If you want to change the configuration, but it's locked in someone else's account then you have two options:
    a) Wait a year for the configuration to expire and you can claim it from the OGN database. (This was added recently).
    b) Change the FLARM ID in your device to a random ID, and configure the new flarm ID in OGN and FlarmNet.
I do mention that here:

So both of the aircraft I mention have transponders and both are set to their hex codes. Both are past a year, since being registered. How do you "Claim" a aircraft? I tried to change the one I sold to the one I own by editing it after being logged in and using the edit tab for "my devices" but got the error message of "device already registered".

I had a similar issue and I contacted: con...@glidernet.org

It was taken care of.

This has been an issue for years.  The "staff" (a handful of volunteers) at OGN cannot handle all this manually.  Finally they got convinced to introduce a registration expiration scheme (after another volunteer developed the needed software).  This only went into effect a few months ago.  I believe that entries will not "expire" until a year after this scheme was introduced.  After that they will expire a year since each registration (or when an entry was last edited).  Note that "expiration" does not mean the registration vanishes, just that a new owner will be able to register the ID with new info, and won't get the "device already registered" error.

Using the ICAO ID (rather than the device ID) prevents most of these problems, since if the aircraft is sold then the ICAO ID still belongs to it, and if the FLARM is sold and installed in another aircraft then it will get configured with the ICAO ID of the new aircraft.  Problems still remain if the new owner of the aircraft wants to enter a different contest ID, for example.

a great link/resource John, thank you. not a trivial or intuitively obvious task. if you bought a glider from someone else it is best to ask them to de-register at flarm website so that you can register it in your name - otherwise it gets more complicated. I recently went through all those steps but had to figure it all out my self, and even after that still need to verify it all actually worked by asking another pilot how I showed up on their screen.

Jonathan.

My FLARM presentation has been updated with suggestions from others on this thread (mostly Moshe!).

I added a section on how to transfer a FLARM between owners and/or between aircrafts.   Also about adding a FLARM to the OGN database.

Let me know of anything that may be confusing - especially use by a new FLARM owner.

Thanks, John DeRosa (OHM)
