Instrument Panel Placards

Anyone have suggestions on a label maker and type of label for use to make labels and placards for instrument panels?

Dymo Letratag makes tape that is matte black with white lettering that works well on my carbon fiber panel with good adhesion.

For cockpit "placards" I scaled an image from a digital copy of the flight manual and printed them on waterproof adhesive backed shipping label I found at Staples.  For labeling switches and fuses on the panel I used dry transfer letters and sealed them with clear coat from a spray can to lock them in.  Those label maker things never stay stuck for me no matter how I cut the corners.

I did the same as Doug, using the flight manual drawings of various placards scaled up to the proper size, for a Ventus B.  I took those to a sign shop for printing.  As far as lettering for switches there's a myriad of methods, from lettering/tape machines to custom made engraved stuff.

We've had good luck with an inexpensive Brother label maker, with white on black print ribbons. It takes a little experimentation to get the font size and spacing correct, but the labels seem to hold up well and don't peel off. Just make sure there are no oils or grime on the panel when you apply them. And keep your dirty fingers off the adhesive!
