I am in the process of trying to finalize the export from Canada to the US of a glider and Avionic trailer.  The brokerage firm I am using states the trailer is not admissible into the States owing to it not being registered with the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration.
Has anyone imported an Avionic trailer into the US?  Did you have any issues with getting it imported and registered?
Any help appreciated.

Thank you Dave.  It is a very complicated process it would seem.

I did from UK. Avionic issued a compliance document and that solved the problem.

Hello Andrzej,
Nice to hear from you again.  There is a compliance document from Avionic but apparently now that is not good enough, or so it seems to the brokerage firm.  Rules have changed over the years I guess.

I am a bit puzzled by all these requirements. Here in AZ we can build a home built trailer and get a VIN assigned to it with a simple inspection for roadworthiness and drive it around all we want. I imagine it is the same in other states.

So that makes me wonder if one could go up to Canada and simply drive with it across the border? Or perhaps make some small change to it and claim it is now a home built trailer?

My komet trailer is registered as a homemade. The story I was told is that many moons ago someone bought it but forgot to get a trailer bill of sale. Since they didn't have that, they just went to the DMV and told them the trailer was a homebuilt.

When I took the trailer to get a TX safety inspection, the inspector didn't care in the slightest. Tax office also didn't care when I registered it, they just wanted their money.

Of course, plenty of people think TX is supposed to be a free state where the govt doesn't have any rule over you or some crap like that so it may be different for other states.

Back when I was building trailers for gliders, the local MVD office let me declare a value of the trailer for registration Then, after years of allowing a simple declaration of value, they changed to a requirement that made me present all of the invoices for construction. Steel, aluminum, rivets, nuts & bolts, wheels, tires, wiring, lights, hitch, and everything else had to be itemized. Needless to say, this was a major pain in the rear. It was about then that I decided that this requirement was the last factor in whether or not to continue building trailers. (Mostly I was tired of putting out that much work for not a great rate of return. All I was doing was delaying starvation- not eliminating the possibility.) Before considering whether to claim a factory trailer as a "homebuilt," make sure your state MVD doesn't have ridiculous demands like this.

I bought one from the factory in 2009.  It comes with a US VIN plate.

Registration was a piece of cake (in Texas).  I recall debating whether to register it initially as a homebuilt or farm trailer, though the annual license slip says "Avionic."

It all depends on the state you are trying to register your trailer in.  Generally, if the trailer has a data plate from the manufacturer you can get it registered fairly "easily".

If you look in my presentation on the proper use of trailer chains (pages 27-33" you will find links to the rules of the road for trailers in every US state.  Please let me know if a link is bad!
