Hi folks,

A few of us from Faultline Flyers are interested in flying wave. I understand Mindin is an option, but it's about a 26-hour drive for us.

Does anyone in this group know of other wave flying locations that might be more accessible?

Thanks,
Ron

For the most part, you need a ridge or mountain, pretty much rules out the Midwest and southern coast.
So, west to mountains or east to Appalachian's.

You can use the "where to fly" map on SSA to find operations.

Talihina and Marfa have been known to have wave.  But not as predictable & reliable at the better known wave sites east & west.

Boulder has a massive wave off the Contintial Divide.   There have been flights above 30K ft when the Arapahoe Wave Window could be opened.  Now when you call Center, they dont know what you are talking about.  There has been an effort to reactive the wave window, but little progress.   One can still get very fast wave flights upto 17,999.

Mile High Gliding offers commercial tows to the rotor if you bring your own ship.  They also rent an aluminum SGS 1-32 if you don't want to risk damaging the finish on your own glider.

If you like soaring cold and rough, come up to Boulder this winter.

There is a wave window agreement with Boston Center over Mt Washington in New Hampshire. An operating transponder and communication with ARTCC is required.

Alberta Soaring Council runs a Fall Wave Camp at the Cowley airfield October 4-13 this year - perhaps a bit too far from TX.

We have an airspace agreement with NavCanada that allows us to fly over 18,000 when it is open. Transponders not required, but Flarm is highly recommended.
