Has anyone used a US made complete axel assembly to replace what’s on the Cobra trailers?

The old rec.aviation.soaring, which is still searchable, has a number of threads on replacing ALKO axles. Here is one with a couple of suggestions (perhaps ship Euro axle with new glider trailer; North American source for replacement):
For added historical value, you can see posts after the useful stuff that reminds us why RAS_Prime is so much better.

Old RAS still has valuable info (or at least opinion) and shouldn't be forgotten.

Searching for "axle" likely gets you better relevant results that "axel", unless you're looking for "Guns and Roses".....

If you are looking for Guns and Roses, you have to search "Axl."

I just had my Cobra brake shoes re-lined by a shop here in Houston. New ones cost $280 with the 50% tariff, and re-lining the old ones was $120. We will have to work around this until it’s over.

I’m sorry I thought if I spelled it Cobra Axel I wouldn’t have to pay a tariff

A few years back, the AL-KO axel - actually the trailing arm - under our Twin's trailer got severely bent and I contacted AL-KO in Elkhart, IN. The axel we needed was not on hand but one was available in their warehouse in Hungary. The stars aligned since they had a truck going from Hungary to Germany and they would then load right it away into a container headed for the US. I had the axel on hand in a little over four weeks from making first contact including new brake cables.
Googling for AL-KO in Elkhart, IN shows that this location is permanently closed now, but I found this site referenced from AL-KO in Germany:
Maybe the axel you are looking for can be found there.

Good luck,

Uli

Apparently, the AL-KO in Elkhart Indiana was acquired by Dexter Axle and is now known as DexKo.

I put a Dexter axle on my 1981 Cobra trailer. It took some massaging, but it's been fine for the last six years.

I replaced my 1981 Cobra trailer's axel with a Canadian made axel.  Dexter was another option but being in Canada, it was easier and cheaper to get it from there. It has the Flexiride torsion axel https://canadianaxle.com/ which is nice because the arm is adjustable.  I wasn't sure what angle to order and when I received it, it was a bit low.  But I just needed to remove one bolt and rotate the axle down to get the ride height I wanted.

I gave the trailer company my specs and it was almost as easy as bolting it on.  I had 4 bolts and the 2 holes lined up on the front, I drilled new holes for the rear bolts.  Of course I needed to install the wiring from the brakes to the front but that was pretty straight forward.

I switched to electric brakes.  They are a bit more work because I needed to install a brake controller in my vehicle.  I am hoping the ease of getting parts will make up for the install of the controller and 7 pin plug.

I replaced mine with a Dexter about 20 years ago. if you don't want to do yourself.   Take to about any trailer place and they can replace your axle.

Glen,

The t@b trailers use the same axel.   Not sure if they have the exact replacement axels in the US but worth checking.

Thanks everyone. Looks like Dexter is the best choice because they took over AL-RO
