Adding a trig transponder to a glider (diy)

Hello.

I recently got a trig transponder. Unfortunately it seems that the people at Warner Springs are a bit busy. Is installing it yourself hard? Should I get a professional to do it? I am pretty handy. If this is something I should not attempt do you guys have a rec for a person who can do it in Southern California? I understand that if I do it myself I would need to get a sign off.

It is possible to DIY but the regulations in your jurisdiction may have more to say about who is permitted to do it.  

I removed a Terra and installed a Trig TT22 and TN72 in my Discus and made the harness and RF (coax) cables. The Trig installation manual was clear and helpful. I folded up aluminium trays for mounting the GNSS antenna, TN72 and transponder. I performed the electrical load analysis and weight and balance changes. All reasonably straightforward. Then a licensed aviation radio engineer did the transponder tests and the logbook entries. 

But, I'm an electronics engineer and have the proper crimp tools, Tefzel aviation grade wire and some experience with designing GNSS receivers.

Easy if you use the Trig harness and can find space for the extra length wiring.  Not so easy if you do your own harness ( avoids extra wire). Crimping the antenna cable I found to be hard to do well.

Some time ago I added a Trig TT-22 and TC-20 with a Larry Goddard harness supplied through Cumulus Soaring. When I added a TN-72, Larry upgraded my harness for a quite reasonable price. Be VERY CAREFUL not to mix up plugs between the TC-20 and TN-72.

These days I'd seriously consider the Air Avionics ACD in place of the TC-20 for a new installation. Harder to confuse plugs.

My Winter altimeter is now a power off backup.
