I'd like to learn more about Quadrilateral Tasks, which I first heard of as part of the "SSA United States Decentralized Soaring Contest (SSA-UDSC) Competition Rules".  Maybe I've missed references to these tasks in the past.  Have they been used anywhere else or are they a new invention? Are tools available to help declare them?  For example, See You, the LX9000 series flight computers, Skysight, etc all help pilots easily build tasks that meet FAI triangle rules.  Are tools like that available for Quadrilateral Tasks?  Thanks in advance for any replies.

This is all I know (from https://docs.weglide.org/contests/national/ssa_udsc.html)

4.1.5.2 Quadrilateral Task

For a closed-course SSA-UDSC quadrilateral flight, an additional 40% bonus is added if the area between the turnpoints (or turnpoints and start/finish point) can be described by two triangles for which:

both triangles must meet the same requirement as in 4.1.5.1
the triangles must share one identical leg
    the triangles must not overlap

The scoring distance for quadrilateral flights is the perimeter of the quadrilateral. The start point can be located on a leg between two vertices of the quadrilateral. Free (undeclared) quadrilateral flights are not permitted for scoring.

In addition to answering Nico's question I would like to know how to declare a task on WeGlide generally, and if the task was declared in the IGC file does WeGlide automatically recognize that?

And while I'm here CONGRATULATIONS to Nico who managed the top aggregate distance among  all OLC  competitors last season. He flew slightly less than 75,000 kilometers ( that's right - kms not "points") which was the equivalent of TWO World Soaring Distance Awards (measured by the approximate circumference of the earth) in one season.  Just outstanding.

Create a task.

Task icon bottom of screen.
'Create' button.
Click on map points.

Drag leg centre points to add TP's.

Expand the task by dragging the window up.

Add or delete task points. Modify them.

Yes, tasks in IGC files are recognised.

Thanks for the comments.  I think I am making progress.  When creating an FAI triangle task in WeGlide, there is a great visual indication showing the valid FAI triangle areas.  I’ll try to include a screen capture below.  When expanding the triangle to make a quadrilateral task, the line showing the task is thicker when the quadrilateral requirements are met, but unlike when defining an FAI triangle, there is no indication of how far you can move the turn points and still meet the task requirements.  I didn’t notice the difference in line thickness until experimenting after reading Ian’s message.  Maybe the visual cues will be improved in the future.

Screen capture showing excellent visual indications of how far turn points can be moved while still meeting the criteria for an FAI triangle:

Screen capture showing thick lines for a quadrilateral task, but no indication of how far they can be moved while meeting the task criteria:

Screen capture showing thin lines when a non quadrilateral turn point is added:

If I understand correctly, I just have to watch for thick lines when creating the task.  If they are thick, I have a valid quadrilateral task.

I’m still interested in any history of quadrilateral tasks, and of course any corrections to the above.
