When I went to my first contest I read the Sailplane Racing Association's (SRA) guide about competition from cover to cover.  It was a God send containing important answers for me, a beginner.

I now have a friend at our club who is going to his first contest.  I gave him a copy of the "latest" version of the SRA document that I could find which is from 2005.  Most of this document is still valid but there are some obvious issues with it that needs updating.

My question - Is there a later version of this helpful guide?  Like in our same decade?!?!

Thanks, John (OHM)

Thanks for pointing me to the 2011 SSA "THE SSA GUIDE TO SOARING COMPETITION".

I found three (3) other related documents;

- How to Get Through Your First Contest by Peter Deane
- How to Prepare for and Fly your First Contest by Hank Nixon
- Introduction to the 2018 SSA Competition Rules

All four (4) documents are stored at derosaweb.net/aviation/Contest_Flying

If you know of newer versions of these documents and/or other related documents please let me know.

My two cents - I think that someone qualified (ain't me) should create a 2026 version of "Flying Your First Contest".

As the author of the second document listed, I would be curious as to what you would change in a 2026 document.

Hank,

Thanks for creating your document.  I have only flown in a handful of contests (regionals) so I am least likely person to change a word.  Thank goodness that people like you that take the time to write their document for the new kids on the block that I once was.

This thread started because the 2005 version of the SRA document had some obvious outdated details (minimum finish altitude for one) so I though there must be other documents with better intel.

And, yes, there were a few documents previously unknown to me.  Not knowing how old they where I thought that the authors might like to take a look at their document and see if anything needs refreshing.  Maybe an update based on a contest incident (major, minor, silly), or a rule change, which would be invaluable to know.  Then advertise in RAS_Prime that their document has a revision or two for 2026.

Thanks again.
