Happy new year to all !
I have noticed in cockpit pictures that a  number of pilots use a sophisticated flight computer like the LX9xxxx etc., and another PDA/Oudie /phone. etc.
Is the the smaller screen is used as a  back up the main display in case of total battery failure, or to show extra information, or maybe both...

In a contest, if your flight computer quits for any reason, you are out for the day. A backup prevents this.
It is not really needed unless you are flying in an area you are not familiar with. Then it would be hard to find
your way home.

The primary reason is to have a backup flight log so the pilot can get scored.
Redundancy in instruments and batteries reduces the probability of a disaster.
I can fly the course with a map but it is of no use if there is no log.

Bit of both. I fly with an LX9070 and SeeYou running on a phone. SeeYou is better ( imho ) at airspace alerts and an uncluttered nav display. It also acts as a data feed via Internet sharing over its wifi AP for updating skysight weather and satellite data to the LX.

Phone is good for displaying overlays like weglide copilot or glideandseek to see where other people are.

Phone is 'necessary' equipment in a landout so may as well keep it fully charged and put it to use.

Oh and it takes good photos.

I like to have a Flarmview or similar warning screen right at the top of my panel - so that I don't have to look down when I get a warning. That's exactly when you need to keep your eyes up and outside the cockpit.

I agree. My flarmwiew display is on a separate instrument too. The LX is top centre because any lower and its partially hidden by my hand or the stick. As long as you know where to look a dedicated instrument is a great idea.

Ian,
Is the phone WiFi AP an APP or a piece of hardware ?
I am connecting my phone to data feed  the LX via my phone hot spot. Is this a WiFi AP ?

Yes, the phone AP is what I use for the LXdata.

Very cool too for the flight to upload to weglide ,seeyou and my email 30 seconds or so after the flight has ended.

I have LX9000 and Oudie N IGC. I like to have one zoomed out and one zoomed in, and I use the Oudie for any touchscreen lookup eg of airspace. I also have an S10 but I don't use any map or nav features on that, I got it as a way to add Hawk and a backup artificial horizon with internal battery backup.
