Apps for daily inspections

I would like to hear from any club that uses a smart phone app to do the daily inspections. 

Do they work? What would you change?

I imagined a voice response kind of app that voices what to look at next and listens for a reply. SO the hands can be free. And it records who did the inspection and when.

But I am sure there are better ideas how there, even if that idea is "Don't bother"

I would build it in Claude Code of course.

I did something similar about a year and a half ago for checklists using ChatGPT to write Python code. It was pretty easy. Instead of a reply, I had the code look for double tap on a PTT switch.

Thanks for the instant reply. 

How did the app sense the PTT double tap?

Did you allow for any comments like “Serviceable but nearing replacement” or whatever? Or just indicating Complete at each step?

I would do an iphone app possibly for resale if it worked at a club.

The code runs on a Raspberry Pi4, and the PTT is connected to one of the GPIB pins and ground.  With an app on a phone, I suppose you could double tap the screen or have a button.

My project was/is a voice interface soaring assistant.  I haven't worked on it in a while.

Nice. Creative. One of our members used a Pi to display the current day’s flight's in real time after picking up data from flightbook and adding our weather station and scheduled intro flights.  https://glgc.kniat.org/dashboard/ looks better on a flying day.

Another member created a complete real time flight books in a web browser. Very comprehensive.

There was a time when a club had no one to make a web page and now we have heads down coders creating useful stuff. Thanks AI!

I will do a proof of concept using voice control if possible, iPhone only.

I guess I'm just an old fart, but this seems like a solution looking for a problem.

Gliders are rarely (if ever) complicated enough to need more than a hard copy checklist - and that more as a reminder than a list of items to check. So now instead of a checklist in the cockpit at all times, you need an app on your phone or tablet? For each glider type? And what if after completion somthing gets undone - how does it know? 

What exactly is this solving?

I can see the utility for an opening and closing checklist for a club operation. Assuming a club is using a tablet to manage flights, etc, then having an opening/closing checklist (along with emergency procedures, contacts, etc) would be really useful.

As part of that, a check-off list of active gliders that have been preflighted, cleaned, batteries, etc would also be useful to avoid last minute chaos on the flightline...

Perhaps a voice activated, aural checklist would be useful - turn it on, put phone in pocket, it talks you through preflight inspection and checklist without having to mess with a phone or paper checklist.

Anyway - if it keeps the kids engaged, then i'm all for it!

It is an exercise to see if it works. I have the voice prompt/response now running now. And you can choose a British or Aussie voice, how good is that?

The advantages are that the pilot hears every detail of his checks every time and it gets recorded who did the DI and what flaws were found can be broadcast instead of word of mouth.

It’s not for us Boomers but the kids need some uniformity maybe.

It is all a big maybe.
