My Raspberry Shake (RA0EB) was working fine. I decided to move it to another location, and it's no longer working. Then, I moved it back to the original location, set it up exactly the way it was originally, and it doesn't work there either.

When I plug it into an Ethernet jack to get it started, and try "raspberryshake.local" or "raspberryshake.local:5000" the browser doesn't see the Shake.

Any advice?

Does this maybe sound like I will need to get a new SD card and burn the SD card image?

How did you shut the Pi down before moving it? You're dealing with a
[small but complete] Linux computer which happen to have it's file
system on that SD card. So preferably you shut it down orderly!! Or you
risk file system corruption which may cause a slower-than-normal boot
(because the Pi would try to check and repair the filesystem) or
complete failure to boot:-(

Without a screen, it's very hard to know, what's going on:-(

You can try to watch the green LED next to the `power micro-USB plug`.
When you power the Pi, it will blink a couple of times.

Iff it goes completely dark after the first flurry (for >> 30 secs), the
Pi probably failed to boot.

Iff that green LED continues to blink once in a while (pretty
irregularly with breaks up to a couple of secs), then your Pi is still
working on something.

Thanks, Marco.

I shut it down by simply turning off the power strip. Not very elegant/probably bad on my part, I know :) I didn't realize that there is a better way to shut it down, and my inelegant solution didn't cause any problems in the past, but regardless can't undo what I did, so onward:

I won't be back to the new site for another couple of days, so detailed diagnostics will have to wait. But, I can remotely access a Windows computer and a Linux computer that is on the same network, if that is in any way helpful.

In the meantime, two things for me to work on/let me know if you have any advice on these:

1. I'm guessing that at this point, the thing to do is to get a new SD card and burn the SD card image. Does that seem right?

2. For the future: What is the correct way to shut down the Raspberry Shake?

Any advice on either or both of these would be welcome.

Thanks!

~ Alan

Hi Alan,

you can shutdown your Shake with the web interface. Actions -> Actions -> Shutdown.

Or SSH into the Shake and enter at the command prompt:
sudo shutdown 0

Be patient. It takes some time to shutdown.

Cheers,
Thorsten

Just to clarify, as I am awaiting my new SD image card....  what is the order of operations to turn the machine back "on"?  Do we connect to power first, then connect the Ethernet cable?  Or is it the reverse order?  TY again to the entire Raspberry Team!

Personally, I would have the Ethernet connected when the RPi first boots, so
that it can connect to the local network, and hence the Internet, right
away.

The green LED next to the `power micro-USB plug`is completely dark, after a couple of days:

So, do people following this recommend that the best thing for me to do is to get a new SD card and burn a new SD card image?

You can try to burn the image on the existing card. It depends iff the
card has reached it's end-of-life or if just the [logical] filesystem
got corrupted. At least a laptop would complain when it can't write the
new image because of a bad card.

But overall, for a remote location, it's probably better to take a new card.

Maybe a dumb question, but I couldn't figure it out from the manuals :) Sorry if I am missing something obvious :)

Where is the SD card?
Do I have to take the Raspberry shake apart to get to it so I can burn and install a new one?

have fun, I had my fun, it took me 2 weeks to get there

I actually purchased a new SD card, and bought a bigger size.

and you have to format to clean everything out.

Hi Alan,
if I manage it , you can too, I just plotted through,
reformat the SD
the hardest part is to unzip the file, there two level of unzipping the file the one that Raspberry has sent you.
If you think that you cannot do it,
I did do it and I did not believe myself, and I went and bought one from Raspberry.
That shows you the level of confidence that I had on myself.
But before you start, ask yourself, if you can do it.
Second is it worth your while to buy one already done by Raspberry - Osop.
mind you it is 20$US but the postage is a killer. Depends where you live.
If it is going  to be another time, I will buy one already done.
Ciao, Anna

That all sounds much harder than it is:-(

* Yes, to get the old card out and the new one in, you have to remove
the top & back of the Shake-enclosure. Three screws on the top & things
fall apart;-)

* The Micro-SD has a little lip on the underside. That makes it easier
to pull it out with your fingernail. Unfortunately, the Pi3 does not use
the spring-loaded sockets any more. Things were even easier for the Pi1
& Pi2.

* Getting & burning the SD image is described in the manual here:
https://manual.raspberryshake.org/burnSD.html . Iff you have a Mac,
there are many descriptions on the web. The Shake image works the same
way as any other bootable image for a RaspberryPi, just use the correct
file name;-)

It's not that hard;-)

Have fun,

Hi all:

Buenos días.

Many thanks Marco. Excellent instructions as usual.

Just one comment here. Newer enclosures (post ~mid June 2017) have an additional slit for the SD card extraction. So no disassembly is required. Just tweezers as Anna observes.

Alan, replacement of the SD card should be quick, easy and relatively painless:

0. Shut down the Raspberry Shake
1. Burn the new SD card
2. Remove the old one and place the new one
3. Boot up
4. See QuickStart guide at manual.raspberryshake.org for initial configuration of Data forwarding, etc.

I am glad to see so many tech support tips from the community.

I was able to download raspberryshakeSD.img and unzip it, and I tried to burn the SD card with Win32 Disk Imager.

Attached is the result. Does that seem right?

I was able to burn the SD card and get my RShake back up-and-running!

Long story/comedy of errors :) and I don't remember exactly why it worked this time, but I just tried to carefully follow the instructions and it worked.

Thanks to all who replied here for all of your help!!
