Depression Cherry seems to explore the aftermath of a disintegrating relationship - where one soul is trying to connect back with the world. This soul invested so much in the relationship that has been severed. But was he lost to begin with? Was his only way of feeling at home in the world through this other soul? Hence, : "Were you ever lost? Was she ever found?" This character is floating in space. You can see it in his eyes - the Abyss he is in. And the only thing left for him to do is to let gravity take its course to pull him back into belonging the world - "Fall back into place."
@joeyalamo17 i see where you're coming from. but maybe it is not a romantic relationship. i dislike songs that add so much emphasis on people's love lives... perhaps they just lost their sense of self and is fighting their way back
I think she's talking to a younger self. The "wide-eyed girl" is her as a teenager or even as a child and she's telling this girl that, although "it will take a while to make you smile", somewhere this older and experienced version of herself is with her child version, helping her to "fall back into place".
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, musically and lyrically. Beach House is an amazing band that, with such simple and beautiful music, makes you think and feel so deep about life. Amazing band and amazing song.
im very sorry to whoever hasn't listened to this beautiful piece of art, and the rest of what beach house has to offer. the lyrics are well written poetry with depth and meaning behind each line. it tells a story, a story you can interpret as your own. it feels empty, feels like floating endlessly in space. it feels like the void, an ending but a potential beginning. like after a bushfire, the ash's fading away and new life sprouting. beach house is the end credits to a film that leaves you questioning what happens next.
I think it's about a person who has experienced a breakup or been broken up with and has a person, who could be the person from the relationship or just another person, now observing them. Observes they are now almost empty-eyed, and with eyes being said to be the gateway to the soul, they have disconnected to their soul or to their old self and have nothing showing the true person behind the eyes as they mask their emotions, feelings or discontinuing communication with others. "Somewhere in these eyes, fall back to place, fall back to place" is a call to reconnect with their soul and to come back to reality as they have their soul floating, as if in space.
"From an empty sea, a flash of light". Like a lighthouse, having depression while in a relationship; that person is your lighthouse when you're lost at sea. That person lets you know you're safe and that they're on your side. Lyrically, the song makes me think of Drive by The Cars, or the cover by Deftones. I absolutely love this song it makes my heart break over and over again for the same girl i cant stop thinking of... maybe one day.
