He is the founder of the Sunset Social Drinking Club (SSDC), Wienerpalooza and co-founder of POSH (Paws Often Steal Hearts), which all champion the welfare of shelter animals and finding forever homes for our furry friends. Ben is a Key West transplant displaced by Hurricane Katrina and spent over 2 decades living in the lower Garden District & Bayou St. John in New Orleans. Ben is an avid Key West socialite and in his spare time leading the SSDC, his hobby, which is a charitable organization that gives back as much as possible to the community that they are a part of. To date, the SSDC has helped raise over $150K for the FKSPCA and over $300K in total for other local charities.

His transition to working for the US Navy as the MWR Director, managing Quality of Life Programs for military personnel, their families, and DOD civilians, demonstrates his commitment to enhancing the well-being of those who serve our country.

While working in Djibouti, Africa and Bahrain, he volunteered at animal refuges and the Bahrain SPCA. His decision to adopt two kitties from the SPCA in Bahrain, along with finding and giving a home to JAX, a dog abandoned in an apartment building, shows his genuine love and care for animals in need.

OK, so I found out about the book bingo, and it seems super fun. I've already read a ton of books this year, but the most recent series I completed was was the first in Seven Realms. I've never really written a review, but I'll do my best, as it's encouraged for the purposes of the Bingo Game. I will be attempting to review this based on different categories that matter to me. And then give an overall score. My system is obviously perfect and flawless, and completely objective. Here goes something. Also, I will try to keep this free of major spoilers, but I am going to be talking about the book and characters, so there's some amount of minor spoilers that are just going to come up. I have hidden the only section where I go into tons of detail, however.

Characters: The story revolves around two main characters. Their names are Raisa and Han. Raisa is the princess heir to throne, and Han is a former "streetlord" basically a gang leader. But all the gang members are basically children (seem to all be younger than 18). Han is mostly pretty down on himself, and feels like he can never do enough to take care of his family. He was a successful streetlord, very successful in fact, but his mom hated that that's what he did to pay for things, and treated him very poorly for it, so he got out of that business. Unfortunately, without stealing life was way harder, so now he could scarcely bring home the money to take care of his mom and sister. He beats himself up over this a lot, and it frames a large portion of how he views himself. This is in stark contrast to everyone else, who almost all seem to think he's just incredible. Han works extremely hard, cares a ton for his family, and is extremely singularly focused on accomplishing whatever it is he wants, without much care for what he has to do to get it. He would prefer not to murder people, but never sounds like it'll crush him to do so. He is also a big fan of the ladies, and they don't seem to mind it at all. He's a fairly standard protagonist with the only real exception being that his morality is often questionable. But he is very likable. Which I will largely credit to some solid character writing by the author, Cinda Williams Chima. I'll give him a 6.5/10 with 5 being average (for characters in general, not within the story).

Raisa is really where the first book shines, IMO. Despite the fact that the chapters surrounding her tend to be less exciting and more about political intrigue, which is less interesting to me personally, she is really a delight. She's an extremely confident, flirtatious girl, arguably pretty arrogant, and behaves like you might expect of a princess: She just goes and gets the things she wants. And in book 1 a lot of that is boys. Good lord is this girl thirsty. Hot wizard guy from a high noble family? Got'em. Hot warrior guy from a powerful warrior tribe called the Demonai? Done. Best friend who came back from 3 years away at army training and got taller and kinda hot? Done. In fact, it took her exactly one day for her to say "Meet me on the roof," and put the charm on him. And I'm pretty sure all of that happens in the first half of the book. Another bit I enjoy is that she does all this while making it clear to everyone she has absolutely no interest in being in a real relationship or getting married. Not really something she wants despite her being of marrying age and nobility a few months from the start of the book. I also love that it feels like she's lived a very pampered life, all her worries are about these kinds of "trivial" things like who she wants to make out with next, or how annoying it is she'll have to marry someone she probably doesn't love, or how boring it is that she has to spend so much time learning about proper etiquette and similar nonsense. She loves horseback riding, shooting her bow, making out with boys, and having herself some adventures. I love her. She's awesome. 9/10

Side characters: There's a lot of them, I won't go into detail about them, but I'll say that none of them lack for character. They all feel very much alive and distinct from one another. Their motivations are clear, they make sense, and you do feel like the history you never saw between them exists! Something that can be really tough to do. While some of them bore me, they're never purposeless at least. And they definitely feel human, and have flaws, and overall definitely add to the world and the story. Some of the minor characters include best friend of Han, Dancer. He's a kid from the Clans who are ruled by the Queendom (though the Clans hold a great deal of power) and it really made me realize how often books fail to give a best buddy to the main male protagonist. It's sorely missed, their interactions are natural, funny, and a pretty major breath of fresh air. I love romance, I do. But a good close friendship is so good to see. They're also hard to write, but like I said, Cinda knocks characters out of the park. Han has a couple of past "girlies" as the kids on the streets of Ragmarket (where he's from) call them. One of them is named Bird, and she's a headstrong girl from the Clans that he's been pals with since they were very young. She's hot now. And they are mutually into one another. The other is his friend Cat, who was his right hand human in back during his gang life. She's pretty annoyed at him for dipping, but is still loyal to him as a person, and has nearly infinite respect for him as a leader. On the other side of things in book one are Raisa's various boys. There's Micah, who constantly feels locked into a strange gray area as a person. He's obviously an arrogant jackass, but he does seem to legitimately like Raisa. But he's also pushy with her when she doesn't want to go further physically with him. He's never atrocious about it, but it's clearly uncomfortable. He's a very odd semi-antagonist. Next up we have Amon, the childhood bestie. He comes home from army looking all glowed up, and Raisa decides she needs to test this out. Amon is a big ol' sweetheart. He's basically the walking cliche trope of the best friend all grown up and hot now. The only exception is that he's extremely resistant to her wanting to hookup with him, and in fact, she kind of does the Micah thing when he resists and is a bit pushy with him. She is, after all, an arrogant and pampered princess. Amon is clearly in love with her, but basically says no because of duty, she's a princess, he's a soldier. Bad idea. She just thinks that's hotter. Next up we have Nightwalker. He's from the Clans, just like Dancer, but he's in their extremely prestigious "Demonai" division, which is like their elite warriors. The nickname Nightwalker is not just because he sneaks around well at night, he has a reputation of sleeping around. He was a brief fling from younger days spent with the Clans at the behest of her father (who is Clan born) and with whom she is very close. Ultimately, not every side character is great, I'm sure you can tell by how much I rambled which ones I found most interesting. There are so many I didn't even mention, the Queen, her consort (Raisa's father), Raisa's sister Melony, some of the other potential suitors, Lucious, Willo (mother of Dancer), and others. But I ramble enough as it is. 7.5/10

Plot: Honestly, the first book's plot largely centers around Raisa coming of age, the fact that her coming of age makes her eligible for marriage, her various suitors, the political machinations that go into picking the right one, and the fact that she very much does not want to get married. The secondary plot follows our main male protagonist, Han. Basically he's having a hard time taking care of his family, and on top of that his former rival gang AND the police are looking for him. At some point some murders are committed against his rival gang and people make the assumption that he must somehow be involved. To be frank: The plot is quite weak. It's not the real focus of the book. And the plot for both characters would fit nicely as some B or even C plots in other fantasy books. The execution is impressive despite the lack of real meat and teeth to what's going on. And as I said to one of my friends as I was reading it and was over halfway through the first book, "I honestly have no idea what this is supposed to be about overall, there's a lot of stuff happening, but I really couldn't tell you what the larger series plot is going to be!" Turns out, this book was mostly setting up, and the larger series plot doesn't kick off until well towards the end. 3/10
