The COVID-19 pandemic has catapulted us from our normal life into a space of uncertainty and unknowingness. Being at home and distant from our family, friends, and loved ones could bring about many triggers and anxious feelings that could sometimes be crippling. How do we build resiliency and tend to our mental health? For starters, we could collectively become aware of it. However, rarely does intellectual understanding about a trigger dissolve the pain attached to it. The good news is we can learn to change how we feel about a certain event or trigger through the technology of yogic breath and meditation. I have tried many and felt that Kirtan Kriya meditation is extremely effective in helping me access my inner calmness.

Kirtan Kriya is a type of meditation from Kundalini yoga. In Sanskrit, a kirtan is a song, and kriya refers to a specific set of movements. Kirtan Kriya is thus sometimes considered as a singing exercise. It involves singing or chanting of the four sounds, Saa Taa Naa Maa, along with repetitive movements of the fingers, or mudras.

Chant out loud for two minutes, then chant in a whisper for two minutes, then chant silently for four minutes. Then come back to the whisper for two minutes, then a normal voice for two minutes. To end, stretch the arms ups as far as possible, spread the fingers wide, shaking them out like a great release for one minute. Inhale and exhale. Relax.

I recommend doing this for 40 days. How do I motivate myself to do this every day? Because I am desperate to change the emotions around my triggers. I also happen to believe self-responsibility is the best thing I can contribute to the world these days. Every time I practice this meditation in the morning, I feel as if there were a gem in my pocket. No matter how my day turns out, there is already a joy that this meditation brings me. Nothing and no one can take it away from me.

Without Sat Kriya I would without a doubt be wallowing in a depression that I had previously allowed to takeover my life. I had aches and pains that had subsided almost completely in only 2 weeks of practice but this is the benefit that i focus on least. I find myself to be more outgoing because I am more accepting of myself and of those around me. Sat Kriya has provided me with an inner peace, an almost childlike bliss that motivates me to do so very much more with my time. I often wonder what I would be like today If I had grown up with knowledge of kundalini yoga.

My results are what they are because of the nature of my weaknesses. My greatest weakness happened to be self loathing. Thusly, self respect is becoming my greatest strength (of course i focus on my weakness to overcome it). Sat Kriya seems to strengthen my entire being on such a deep level that it affects my personality.

Ive just started doing sat kriya this week and I have a question if someone can aswer it. I have noticed that after 1-2 hours after the kriya its like all my emotions ive held back comes out and I can start crying. What is happening, why is it like this, can anyone explain?

Thank you for your response. Yes it really feels like im cleaning up inside. But can it go to fast or should I keep doing it even if Im already feel emotional.. sad or angry?

I really like how sat kriya feels when Im doing it but I just wondering, I have recently desided to start focus on increase my self esteem and love for my self is sat kriya the right thing to do this or is there more effective ways in kundalini yoga?

Thanks a lot Patrich for sharing all this through this site. I just wisht to know whether its right to do sat kriya without the guidance of a teacher or yogic guru. I daily practice udyan bandh and mool bandh and it has cured my piles problem but i am but skeptical about doing this kriya without the guidance of a teacher. Please advice

@manju thanks for your comment. Kundalini Yoga as taught by yogi Bhajan is perfectly safe if you follow the kriyas exactly as outlined by the master. If you tune in with the adi mantra (ong namo guru dev namo) and end with Long Sat Nam (usually 3 times) then you are okay. I have an outline of mantras used in kundalini yoga here -yoga-mantra-basics/

Thanks a lot for your reply. Your answer completely satisfies my query but i have one more important question i.e., can somebody who is married i mean who isnot practicing celibacy can do this kriya. other thing is that i practiced this kriya for two days and during the night i saw some unusual dream, one was that my hand is injured and my flesh is coming out of my cut elbow and another was that i have been hit by a bullet by someone barging into my house and my family is also subject to same, but i am the first one to be hitted by a bullet. i wish to ask whether this has something to do with the kriya.

my last question is that whether we have to recite the mantra sat naam or we have to say it in our heart bec if we are concentrating on inhalation and exhalation then it is difficult to recite the mantra aloud.

Reducing stress is an important pillar of a brain-healthy lifestyle. Now brain researchers are proving what yoga and meditation practitioners have known for thousands of years: The brain thrives when it is given time to pause.

Where in India can I enrol in this program.

I live in a rural setting, about 70 Kms from Bangalore. I practice yoga, pranayama every day and I am very keen to learn Kirtan Kriya . I am 67 years old

Hi Stacey! Great to hear from you. Not sure about that becauseit probably depends on the type of phone and format. There are lot of kirtan kriya downloadables that are free if you google. Yoga nidra, too, which I also love.

Kundalini dates back thousands of years and is believed to have originated in shamanic cultures in present-day India. For generations, the practice was only taught directly from Guru to student until it was brought to the West in the late sixties.

First and foremost, all types of yoga were designed by the Sages and Brahmans ages ago for one purpose: to obtain higher consciousness and enlightenment. While we may practice yoga for better flexibility, tight buns, and toned arms, the physical benefits from postures like Downward Dog and Plank are only one branch of the eight limbs of yoga.

The main difference between Kundalini Yoga and Vinyasa or Hatha Yoga is that Kundalini combines the physical and spiritual limbs of yoga into a set of practices called Kriyas. The Kriyas include mantras, postures, breathwork, mudras, and meditation.

Kriyas are also created to help target issues in everyday life, such as fatigue, stress, brain function, and memory. Some kriyas have been passed down for generations and some are newly created or adapted to fit the needs of the time.

All kriyas begin with chanting a mantra or positive affirmation. Chanting demonstrates that everyone has a voice and we can use our voice to develop our own authority. The Adi Mantra is usually chanted in Gurmukhi to begin a kriya.

Kirtan Kriya is easy to do and it gives me a calm and centered feeling. I practice Kirtan Kriya while sitting in meditation, doing a walking meditation, or recently while waiting in long lines at Disney!

In practice, the mantra is a chanting session. There are various chants that a student may choose to use within their Kundalini yoga experience. Each of these mantras holds its own power and meaning, which is clear within the teachings. Gaining knowledge about each of the chants and using them correctly is the secret to understanding the sacred sounds.

The mantra has a direct effect on human consciousness and can lead the way toward enlightenment. The underlying premises here is that each thing that exists and every atom that comes to be has a vibration of sound running swiftly through it. Since each object within this universe has its own sound current, we can attempt to control our own.

With each sound vibration, the student sends out a message to the universe. This creates an energy field within and around their physical being that attracts similarities. This is not a simplistic exchange. Instead, it is more like a magnetic process. The student sends out a motion within the vibrations that they choose and that attracts a similar outcome. For instance, the student may wish to be happy and create joy in their life. When they chant the mantra, they ask the universe for these gifts with each sound vibration. The minute movements attract the emotions back to the body.

The frequency of chants is fundamental to practice. One of the most crucial things that we must learn about mantras is that they are weighted in science. There are 84 pressure points in the roof of your mouth. When you start to use mantra chants, you stimulate various points and activate certain parts of your brain. The vibratory frequency is caused by how fast you do so and the rhythm that you choose. Each frequency sends out a different message to the greater universe and attracts a specific desire to the student.
