My SPSS works fine with GUI, but I want to start using syntax (*.sps) files and run SPSS from windows CMD without the GUI. The documentationhere says it should be easy and specifies the following command:
When working in SPSS, it's possible to have multiple windows of the same type open simultaneously. For example, you may open two different data files in SPSS, and therefore have two Data Editor windows open. Or, you may want to keep your exploratory data analysis and regression modeling syntax in separate syntax files, but you have both open in SPSS so that you can work on both tasks. When this happens, it's important to take note of which window is currently the active window for that window type.
If you have multiple windows of the same type open, it is important to know which of these is the active window because SPSS may direct specific information to the active window. For example, if you have more than one Output Viewer window open, and you run a command, SPSS will print the results of the command in the active Output Viewer window. Thus, if you want output to display in a specific output file, you will want to make sure that file is the active window. You may have multiple windows open during a session (e.g. multiple Output Viewer windows), but only the window that is currently selected is considered active.
i've previously used spss 25 on this laptop which worked perfectly but since the i've had to re-download. a couple weks ago i downloaded SPSS 27 which i've successfully downloaded but it won't open, it just sits loading for hours. it's worked for me a couple times at my uni library but weirdly not at home and not at other uni libraries i've tried. that makes it feel like its a wifi problem but surely it shouldn't seeing as i know i've successfully downloaded it? any help would be appreciated!
This course provides an introduction to the SPSS spreadsheet-like interface. Specifically, we will review the SPSS windows (mentioned below) and execute a small SPSS program. In the interest of time we will not type in any data but use the Anxiety.sav SPSS sample data file. Thus the section on Entering and Editing Data is provided only for reference.
Using the Journal File to Create a Syntax File
By default, SPSS records all commands executed during a session to a journal file named spss.jnl . Open the journal file using the text editor of your choice. The journal file is located in the Windows temporary directory (usually: c:windowstemp). Copy from the journal file and paste to the Syntax window. Make sure you remove (delete) all notes and warning messages. Save the Syntax window for later use.
SPSS differs in one important aspect from other standard software like for instancea word processor or a spreadsheet: it always uses at least two distinct windows, a window that shows the current data matrix, called the glo("sp","Data Editor")(window) and a second windowthat contains the results from statistical procedures called the glo("sp","SPSS Viewer").
As you will learn later, several glo("sp","Data Editor")and glo("sp","Viewer") windows can be open at the same time, andwhen you are a bit more advanced you will learn to use the glo("sp","Syntax Editor") windowfor writing SPSS commands.
SPSS Statistics has three main windows, plus a menu bar at the top. These allow you to (1) see your data, (2) see your statistical output, and (3) see any programming commands you have written. Each window corresponds to a separate type of SPSS file.
As with the other types of windows, you can have more than one Syntax Editor open and the active window is marked with a tiny orange plus sign. When you paste syntax from dialog boxes, it goes to the active Syntax Editor. If you close out all your Syntax Editors and then paste a command, a fresh Syntax Editor is opened.
Now that you understand the basics of using the SPSS windows, you can learn how to carry out statistical tasks by reading part two of SPSS for Students. It covers common statistics, regression, and graphs.
SYSTAT is a comprehensive statistical analysis package that includes graphics and data management. It provides a point-and-click statistical analysis through a series of icons and pull-down menus; the ability to open multiple windows on the desktop to be able to view data, results, and graphics at the same time; and a large array of scientific and technical graphs. Available to faculty, staff and students for use on computers on campus or at home for university-related business. Software must be returned and deleted from your home PC when you leave Ohio State.
SPSS is statistical analysis software and is controlled via a license manager. Our license includes the SPSS Base Package, plus SPSS Advanced Statistics and Regression packages and is available to active faculty, staff, and students for academic research and/or teaching, rather than for management and/or administration. You must be on the campus network or VPN to use the network license. The current release is 28, which runs on Windows 10 and newer. Older versions are available at rcweb.dartmouth.edu/downloads/spss/
You will be presented with an IBM SPSS Statistics window. Since these windows look slightly different if you have the subscription version of SPSS Statistics compared to SPSS Statistics version 28 or earlier versions of SPSS Statistics, we show you these two different windows in the two sections that follow: (a) the IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription window for the subscription version of SPSS Statistics; and (b) the IBM SPSS Statistics XX window (i.e., "XX" is where the version number is displayed) for SPSS Statistics version 28 and earlier versions of SPSS Statistics.
` This book is meant to teach beginners the operation of SPSS for windows. The language is lucid. One's questions on the data are answered, the commands are explained and the outputs shown....I was marvelled when I finished reading the text' - Psychology in Africa
