Hello RapidSMSers!

After some time away, I’m very excited to announce that I will be working full-time with RapidSMS for UNICEF. My new role will involve planning and coordinating the development of an mHealth product for UNICEF country offices, currently known as the ‘1000 Days product.’
Read more about the product here: http://goo.gl/i3no4

tl;dr
UNICEF is replicating and scaling several existing RapidSMS services, including Project Mwana, AnthroWatch, Antenatal Care, mTrac, and more. Many of these will be packaged together as a common product along with additional installation and configuration tools, so that more UNICEF country offices can quickly implement and scale these high-impact interventions. There will be a major emphasis on interoperability with other eHealth / mHealth systems like CommCare, MoTech, OpenMRS, DHIS2, and various national/government data systems.

Basically, I’ll be working with UNICEF’s programme staff, partners, and RapidSMS developers around the globe to align our efforts around a common product that any of our country offices can use. There are six initial target countries where the 1000 Days product will be deployed and scaled nationally -- so its a very ambitious project with the potential to impact the health outcomes of a lot of children for the better. A lot of the work that Colin, Tobias, and the Caktus gang is doing with the RapidSMS core will certainly influence the development of the 1000 Days product, so I’ll be working pretty closely with them. I’ll definitely be reaching out to a lot of folks on this list to learn about good parts, pain points, and ideas for large-scale RapidSMS mHealth deployments. Then, I’ll be working with UNICEF’s programme staff, partners, and RapidSMS developers to prioritize features for development, plan product releases, integrate external services & vendors, and continue iterating on the product.

I’m extremely excited to be involved in the initial development of UNICEF’s 1000 Days product and pushing the reach & scale of RapidSMS. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me here on the list (or off the list, or evanmwheeler on skype, or ewheeler on irc.freenode.net #rapidsms). Also, a lot of discussions related to the development of the 1000 Days product will probably take place on the new RapidSMS Developers list https://groups.google.com/d/forum/rapidsms-dev so please be sure to subscribe to rapidsms-dev if you’d like to follow along.

Onward!
Evan

I'm looking forward to collaborating with you on RapidSMS, Evan! It's exciting to have momentum towards a larger RapidSMS product.

Best,
Colin

Hey all,

Whatever happened with this? Are there still lots of things going on behind the scenes or has this stalled out?

(The recent release notes reminded me of this - and didn't see too much in the way of some of the stuff that was called out specifically on this thread).

Dear Umar,

You might also want to consider RapidPro (www.rapidpro.io) which is (like) the latest version of RapidSMS. RapidPro evolved out of UNICEF's work and lessons learned from RapidSMS and UNICEF is now fully supporting its development.

Since you will be trying a new application for UNICEF Nigeria, you might as well start with the latest UNICEF supported SMS application development framework.
