LONG LIVE THE INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE.

@mcnallyrobinson is my favorite bookstore in Manitoba and I had to stop in while I was there to get a recommendation on what to read next.

John, the McNally Book Whisperer, recommends the novel "Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands" by @kate.beaton . It`s a gorgeous story of hard work, beauty, exploitation, and loneliness.

This is the kind of story that stays with you.

(Also, please enjoy the fact that John and I went to high school together and he also managed the 7-11 where I had a Coke slurpee every day BECAUSE I SAID SO IS WHY).

In theory I know how to increase and decrease. In theory I can read this pattern. In practice, I found myself confused about what was the first stitch in a row and what was the turning chain. I definitely did not count my stitches carefully. I barely did the garter stitch right. I ripped out so many rows only to do them wrong, again.

Kate, I think I love you. Go around the outside with a slip stitch or single crochet. That'll cover all sorts of problems. Also, there's this from Quora: After you've made something and you're ready to block, soak it in warm water with hair conditioner, rinse it, and then block it. It helps! Hello, Use fabric softener to soften cheap yarn. Alternatively, soak it in a mixture of water and hair conditioner, then rinse and let dry. And finally, I believe that exercising any type of creativity improves us overall.

But I wore it to school dropoff yesterday, proudly. I’d seen something like it on some fashionable person’s Instagram and looked up where to buy the actual scarf. It was many, many Euros in cost and I was not going to track one down. I can make that, I thought, though most of my crocheting is variations on squares and this was a triangle. I was going to buy a pattern (this one, if you’re interested). I was going to follow it! As God as my witness, I would learn to increase and decrease! Annnnnnnnnnnnnd. Well, I finished it!

And I don’t care! No one’s going to notice! Actual fiber artists who can see how I messed up are still going to say it looks so cute! good for you! because they are, to a one, some of the nicest people on the planet. I am inspired to get some books from the library, ask one of my VERY, VERY talented friends (hi Cristin) to coach me through some stuff, and try again. I had fun! I like what I came up with! I’m going to do it again and figure out what I did wrong and maybe make another one or something else! (Maybe one of those granny square sweaters???) It took a long time; it’s not perfect; no one would pay me money for the thing; and I definitely need to do it over again. But I had fun. I’m ok with how it turned out. I want to do it again.

What Should I Do if I Have Problems with My Order?
When you receive your shipment, immediately examine the contents to determine that all items ordered are accounted for, either in the shipment or noted as back-ordered. If a small item is "missing" immediately check packing materials. If you note a problem with your order - missing items, duplicate items, wrong items - contact us immediately. Claims made after 5 days of the arrival may result in denial of claim.

When you receive our shipment, immediately examine the contents to determine safe arrival. You need to do this within 5 days of receiving your order; a delay beyond this time period may limit or eliminate a claim process. Protect yourself - inspect. If you note damage, you need to do several things:

1. Maintain all shipping boxes and materials; these may need to be examined by the shipping company (UPS) and returned to the shipping company. Failure to maintain the packing materials can impact how a claim will be handled.
2. If the shipment traveled with UPS, you need to call UPS (800-742-5877) and report the damage to them. They will want information from the shipping label and information from you about the nature of the damage. Follow the instructions you receive from UPS. After you have contacted UPS (if UPS was used to ship your order), contact us for further information.

When possible, we use a form of shipping that either tracks or confirms delivery, or both. We accept this information that your order was delivered.

How Do I Return my Order if I am Dissatisfied?
All returns must be authorized in advance by Mike Pauly from SpinOlution.

Please contact us prior to sending your return so that we can issue a return authorization number to you. Shipping back to SpinOlution is your responsibility. Any return which originally received Free Shipping is subject to the original shipping cost being deducted from the return funds. Upon receipt of your return it takes 10-15 business days to process your return and credit our account. The credit will be processed against the original form of payment. We will notify you via e-mail once your return has been processed.

All returns must include all original parts, packing material and be in new "resale" unopened condition.

The first time I shared my lasagna recipe in 2012, the recipe was mixed with relatively tragic photos and a step was left out! Despite that, so many of you used it and made this delicious dish so I wanted to re-share it today with updated photos.

This is now my favorite lasagna recipe! Amazing!! I made it last week and my family loved it. I used the Barilla flat lasagna no boil noodles and thought it really added a homemade pasta flavor. My husband said this recipe tasted like really good Italian restaurant lasagna! High praise from him! ?

David Chopin,
Kate's Grandson
On Chopin and the St. Louis literary scene:
Well, it was really a kind of byway, an inn or hotel for just about every artistic person who came through town and was in town. She used to have these Thursday afternoon soires and all the poets and the writers and the editors and people who happened to be in town were there. She sat there like the Grand Dame she was and entertained them. Dad used to speak about those times, and he himself was pretty fast with words and he kind of captured the whole spirit of what his mother had been doing. And I'd like to have been there to have enjoyed that myself because it was really a literary island I guess in the literary scene of St. Louis, and it really stood out.

On Chopin's impetuousness:
The story goes that during the time of the Civil War the sympathies were for the South and she went out one time and tore down an American flag that was on the porch. I don't know if she was going to replace it with a Confederate flag or not, but she got into a lot of hot water because of that. Well, she was that kind of a person, you know, she had a strong feeling and she acted on it, and a lot of people would have been afraid to do it. But she was . . . I guess you might call her either impetuous or concerned or dedicated and so forth, so she went ahead and did it, and it almost landed her in jail.

On Chopin's burial in a Catholic cemetery:
People knew that Kate had left the church, and . . . somebody remembered that they saw her coming down the steps of St. Francis Xavier Church, which is in mid-town St. Louis, and figuredthat maybe the reason she was in church was to go to confession, and get back into the bosom of the church again. So it's my understanding that on the basis of that little incident that theyopened up the gates and allowed her to be buried where she is today in Calvary Cemetery.

On Chopin and modernism:
She was very important as one of the earliest examples of modernism in the United States or, if you wish, the cutting edge of modernism in American literature. . . .She was very muchinterested in Guy de Maupassant. She was a pre-eminent stylist and she was as much interested I think in how you told the story as the story itself. In that sense—perspective, point ofview, craft, use of imagery, multiple perspectives— this legacy of appearance in reality which can be seen to come somewhat out of the New Orleans experience that things are not always what they seem and they seem different to different players. All of these then formed her style, the way in which she wrote and I think one reason that some of her stories were very short was because she was self-consciously experimenting with stylistic concerns every bit as much as thematic ones.
