I use Emsisoft Antimalware, it has a behaviour blocker so it doesn't just rely on known virus/malware. It will block unknown programs from doing things like setting auto run or encrypting your files plus a lot more.
For firewall, I would never use a computer without one. I want total control of what programs including windows have access to the internet, also most malware cant do much damage without internet access.
I use Windows Firewall Control, its free and is basically a powerful GUI for managing windows inbuilt firewall. It will do exactly what you want and is easy to use. It will stop programs from adding allow rules to windows firewall without your permission. Whenever a program tries to connect to the internet a popup ill ask you if you want to allow or block it from connecting. Set up which programs you want to connect then turn off notifications and it will never bother you with a popup again. You can put a password on it so your kid cant change settings. Try it you will be impressed.
I only use Winblows Defender (or whatever they call it these days) & Evorim free firewall.
The firewall has neat & tidy interface, is very easy to use & works very well with windows 10, but it needs a few more options. Windows 10 Firewall Control is the best I have used but I need a new version.
Back in the day for AV I tried Kaspersky, Nod32,etc & all sorts of firewalls but in my opinion they are overrated. Had more virusususus on my PC with them too.
I've heard Kaspersky makes your computer slow whereas Malwarebytes doesn't plus it's more effective over KIS.
Currently KIS is using less than 100mb ram and 0% CPU, there have been numerous reviews that show MWB should not be used as an AV replacement but run alongside and existing AV instead. Also its far to expensive but if they advertise it at a monthly cost billed annually then we must be to stupid to do maths and think $5/month! is that all.
I've set up various versions of Kaspersky on a reasonably large number of machines (probably 20+, I'm beginning to lose count) over the years. I've never experienced any performance issues from it, that's in fact one of the big selling points for me is that any performance loss seems to be immeasurably small. That matched with the fact that it has a very high detection rate makes it a good choice, particularly if I'm leaving the machine with someone who is a little less computer literate and is not as up-to-speed on PC security.
Is there any trustworthy site where you can buy a cheap licence for malwarebytes (similar to kaspersky & saveonit.com.au)? Thanks guys :)
I haven't seen any for years and IMHO you are better off buying KIS
I've always liked Webroot. It's light weight and effective.
Oh man! effective might have a new meaning, it allows malware to run, infect files then on scan it will delete some of your infected files and leave a heap behind along with a sad fail for cryptovirus. Win10 Defender does a far better job. Just AVOID! as its worse than useless as it pretends to provide protection.

Hi, I use the free version of Avira, then rotate it with windows defender as a random alternative every month or so.
Does any one know If there is still going to be an Avira free version once the dust settles?
Defender has an option to scan periodically as a second-opinion when the main antivirus duties are taken care of by a 3rd party app.

I've been running ESET Internet Security for a few weeks, to assess for installing on client's machines. I'm liking it a lot. Low cost without any OEM conditions, activation doesn't require credit card or even an account/password, doesn't seem to impact performance much, doesn't block utilities like product key finders by default.
Malwarebytes premium has suddenly decided that Wise Disk Cleaner is bad and quarantines it meaning you can't run it?
Cant you restore it from quarantine then exclude it?

Probably been asked a million times, but I don't have time to read back at the moment, but what is the best Anti virus to run on my Laptop? I have removed Norton that came pre-installed because I kept getting a million and 1 pop ups from it trying to sell me shit and was driving me insane.
I have tried multiple things to get rid of Norton, but somehow it manages to pop up in the notifications again one way or another, I get there trying to protect me, but my god could they calm it down a bit. I could be playing a game and it will full minimize my game to show me some news shit.

Anything Norton still listed in Settings > Apps ?
Norton and most antivirus apps have a gaming mode to prevent interruptions. There's also the possibility of notifications from rogue websites via Chrome. Check allowed notifications in Chrome settings.
Might that depend on the phone's specs? You say they're very light, but no antivirus is lighter!
And you haven't responded to my key point that they're unnecessary because of the locked-down nature of mobile devices. I don't believe it's possible to get a virus from an email or web site, and extremely unlikely to get one from the app store. Where else could a virus come from?
Well, I'm still using Windows 7 and just received an e-mail from McAfee advising me that my renewal for this year is due soon at $84.95, I only use one desktop. Apart from McAfee I use Malware Bytes (free version). Should I dump McAfee, still use malware Bytes and start using Defender?
and start using Defender?
Its Part of Security Essential that I believe MS no longer supports so you could consider another free option that isn't going to hit you with ads and try and up-sell you... or buy KIS as its can be bought cheap.
I help out with a seniors club and have switched all to KIS from the over expensive Norton, and other brands and had no complaints. Hope you got them all to log into their Norton account and turn off auto renewal.
Problem is that I forgot my password, and don't have any password recovery programs ...
All part of the scam called social engineering, Norton 100% know many don't know how to turn of auto renewal and forget their password, that's why they introduced it, most of my elderly clients Norton is the only AV they can name. I have elderly clients paying for Norton when its not even installed, I would never recommend it to any of them and warn them every time I see it on their PC, Norton is now the scammer and they even have affiliates scamming for them, just avoid.
Is Kaspersky trustworthy, have been reading about Russian Gov links.
Likely coming from a country that has been screaming Russia, Russia, Russia for over the last 4 years. Seriously every bit of data leaving your PC is being monitored by groups to see what app is sending what info where.
Norton or Kaspersky?
Norton are scammers praying/social engineering the uniformed/elderly eg: Buy Norton on special and you can't get it activated without registration and that requires you to provide a CC & includes auto renewal, the auto renewal prices are higher than Norton sells is own AV for years. Now the uninformed/elderly now have to remember to turn auto renewal off or get charged these silly prices.
They also have affiliates that are knowingly sending out bulk email/sms scams that your AV is about to expire so click on the link, a link to sell Norton. So yeah, side with a dishonest scamming company or buy Kaspersky cheap from saveonit.com.au
Wow. The link says the renewal price is $157.99 for Norton 360 for another 12 months! I paid about $50 from Office Works for a one-year subscription. I will try to deactivate the auto-renewal with the links your guys have listed before my subscription is due for renewal, which is in August.
I will try to deactivate the auto-renewal with the links your guys have listed before my subscription is due for renewal, which is in August. You can do it the day they sign you up rather than leave it then forget about it as that's the plan.

Lets hope they go for many millions and that this then follows through the rest of Europe, US & Australia. They are the very scamware that they claim to protect you from.
I have switched from Norton to Kaspersky. One feature I liked about Norton was when I downloaded a exe file it notified me whether it was safe or not which Kaspersky is not doing.
When I right click the downloaded exe , check reputation with KSN is greyed out?
I have been using Softpedia & FreewareFiles.com 20 years for all my downloads, they make you aware what Ad-supported programs the author of the program has included.

Users are advised to pay attention while installing this ad-supported application:
Offers to download or install software or components (Facemoods toolbar) that the program does not require to fully function
Offers to change the homepage for web browsers installed in the system.
SS of above.

Hmm... Suspect it's expected behaviour. Your AV would be monitoring all incoming web traffic. Not sure if it's indicative of Kaspersky phoning home, or of local scanning behaviour. You did mention turning on Cloud services earlier.
Aha. I found the thread. Mods could merge my Norton thread into this one. Question to other Norton users: Have you been able to complete a live update today or does it also say "not required" for you?
In the latest issue of Choice Computers Norton 360 Deluxe is the top rated security software package. Here are a few of the results. The higher the better
Wouldn't trust the results, there are sites that specialise in reviewing AV's, this could be a paid for review especially when they compare paid AV against Free!!
