TheLorax is a fantastic book for teaching your children about being good stewards of the earth and its resources, and it is perfect for Earth Day. Discuss different items in your home made of trees or wood. Trees are important to us. We need to remember that we not only need them for building houses, furniture, kitchen utensils, firewood, and paper; we also need trees in the forest where they provide oxygen, soil protection, beauty, and a place for animals to live.
If you have the opportunity, visit a garden nursery this week and observe the different young trees for sale. You may even wish to buy a tree and plant it. You could also plan sometime outside for a hike through the trees at a state park or nature preserve.
Air Pollution
Another type of pollution in the story is air pollution. The smogulous smoke being put in the air by the Thneed factory made the Lorax cough, whiff, sneeze, snuffle, snarggle, sniffle, and croak. The Swomee-Swans were no longer able to sing! The Lorax had to send the birds away to find some cleaner air in which to live.
Throughout this story Dr. Seuss only lets us see parts of the Once-ler (his eyes and hands). Ask your student, what do you imagine the rest of the Once-ler to look like? Help him brainstorm some ideas, and then encourage him to draw a full body picture of this greedy guy.
The Lorax says that the Once-ler is greedy. Greed is defined as a selfish desire for food, money, or possessions over and above what one needs. Can your student think of ways that the Once-ler proves his greed?

Have a blast learning all Earth Day and why it is so important to take care of our planet with this Earth Day Fun Unit! This 76 page unit is packed full of reading, writing, social studies, and science lessons and activities.
Lorax has a long history in Bremerton; the same developer also worked on the Bremerton Harborside over a decade ago and helped the city with the Park Avenue Plaza project in 2012. Most recently, Lorax built the 71-unit 606 Apartments at Burwell and Park Avenue in 2015.
The 1010 Apartments are one of several planned housing projects on the horizon in the city. Another Seattle developer, Mark Goldberg, has filed permits to construct a 110-unit mixed-use apartment building at the corner of Washington Avenue and Sixth Street.
At the end of the lesson, I would ask students to brainstorm topics that they care about. Every day, I will begin class with a lesson about a topic with a lesson or moral. At the end of the unit, I will ask students to look for books with a distinct lesson or moral in the class library. After presenting students with a tutorial on how to create an imovie, they will be put in groups and create their own imovie where they read the book of their choice out loud and explain why they picked it, what it is about, and what the central message or lesson is.
We started our Lorax unit by reading the book, of course. We took the book in parts & discussed it piece by piece. A lot of the concepts from The Lorax are above their heads & doing it this way worked. I used some of the above discussion topics throughout our unit.
I have to say I have received many comments about this hallway display, especially from the kids. The Lorax is huge right now so they are really into it & actually stop to see what my students wrote.
The Earth Day Lorax Craftivity freebie has quite a few different writing sheets to use. If you do this activity please send me a pic or drop me an email. Here are samples of what I included in this freebie.
This Veg Trug unit is the best value I have found for cost and solid design. Sturdy and durable. Lower cost wire frame units available on Amazon and elsewhere will eventually cost more because of their flimsy construction. Zipper opening allows easy venting for heat and humidity control Replaceable clear poly and open mesh covers also available. Available online here.
The Veg Trug greenhouse holds 8 of these 1020 flats, 2 per shelf. You need a total of 16 as the ones without holes are inserted into the ones without, as illustrated in photo above. They are available at Greenhouse Megastore in 10 packs, so you will end up with 2 extra insert trays with holes, and 2 extra trays without holes. Make sure and specify 2 ten packs, one with, and one without holes here. These trays can germinate up to 1,500 seeds each. 4 to 6 months following germination, you will transfer seedlings into a 72-cell propagation tray, which perfectly fit into the 1020 no-hole trays discussed above.
Best results occur with water adjusted to pH 5.5. Most groundwater water in the west is well above Ph 7. I use this high quality pH meter available on Amazon as it lasts many years with proper care, making it a better value than cheaper pH pens with much shorter service lives.
You will need to check your water source before ordering a buffering agent if required, either a pH up or pH down solution, depending. (Adjusting the pH of your water is recommended but not required.)
We had so much fun making these Truffula Trees after reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The boys played for a looong time with their lorax trees, which made the little bit of prep work every bit worth it! :)

A great video by ASAP Science that looks at what would happen to our entire infrastructure if humans left earth. I use this video to start my unit on ecology which focuses on the sustainability of ecosystems.
Are you looking for a simple Dr. Seuss Activities for Kids to do after reading his books? The Lorax Inspired Hand Print Craft is an easy-to-make craft for kids based on the story, The Lorax.
The Lorax is a whimsical story with an important message about the dangers of cutting down trees, pollution, the effects of not taking care of the environment. You can add this creative and cute craft to a unit on taking care of the planet, recycling, or Earth Day.
After gluing on the mustache, your students will cut two ovals out of yellow construction paper or card stock. They will then cut small, thin slits on one end of each oval and bend them up and down. Finally, your kids will glue the ovals above the googly eyes for the eye brows.
Eight teaching units are included, with supporting resources, each of which can be introduced to your class with a letter from the Lorax himself; and a bright wallchart will help you track and celebrate your progress and achievements.
You may know that engineers are responsible for much of the "built environment," including roads, bridges, buildings, skyscrapers, cars, airplanes and so forth, but did you know that engineers also help keep the natural environment safe and healthy? The responsibilities of many types of engineers ensure both public and environmental health. Their jobs are to balance human and environmental needs.
Would you want to live in a world without trees, fresh air, birds or barbaloots? What about a world without clean drinking water, warm houses, cars and roller coasters? Engineers have a big responsibility in how they use technology. Today, we are going to begin a project to plan a new town. To start, we are going to read The Lorax, a story by Dr. Seuss. This story shows us what can happen when the needs of the environment are not taken into consideration.
City planning is the activity of determining the future physical arrangement and condition of a community. This involves examining the present condition, forecasting future requirements, creating a plan to fulfill these requirements, and securing proposals (construction, legal, financial) to implement the plan.
