I tried searching for this online but no luck.
Whenever I go to upload my own custom virtual background, I select the image, and then..nothing happens. I can blur my background, but can't upload any of my own. I tried both the flatpak from the software store, and the .deb package from zooms website.
I have Uma on my desktop computer and recently installed Zoom. It has an option for virtual backgrounds, suggesting that they are supported, but they simply don't work - nothing happens when you choose one. But they work just fine on Windows 10.
The Zoom VDI has a working virtual backgrounds, but is buggy (e.g., you cannot enter profile settings) and noticeably slower and more laggy. I'm not sure where this leaves me in terms of software useability.
I strongly agree. Especially for developers linux is a very common choice and the virtual background feature (without greenscreen - nobody has a greenscreen) is an important feature for working remotely.
Adding my voice as another paid user requesting the same or better functionality on Linux as mac or windows. I too request for a working virtual background on linux without greenscreen.
Linux is the best platform for many professionals and streamers. Please make a linux native version with support for virtual background without greenscreen. If you think that gpu support is complicated because of various proprietary/open source drivers, you can at least make a version with only CPU support. I guarantee you that thousands of Linux users will pay for zoom if you provide such a functionality!
The virtual background feature allows you to display an image or video as your background during a Zoom Meeting. This feature works best with a green screen and uniform lighting, to allow Zoom to detect the difference between you and your background.
You can also upload your own images or videos as a virtual background. There are no size restrictions when adding your own virtual backgrounds, but we recommend cropping the image to match the aspect ratio of your camera before uploading it.
The Communication Office has prepared 4 Zoom virtual background templates for use. EdUHK members are welcome to use it. These 4 templates are preloaded into the Zoom app. If you cannot find it or accidentally delete it, you can download it at EdUHK Zoom Virtual Background Templates.
System RequirementsThere are some prerequisites for using Virtual Background. Below is an abstract of the requirements. For details, please visit "Using Virtual Background in Zoom meeting".
Zoom is one of the best remote collaboration services that are currently available on the market. It has a significant market share and comes with tons of features including the likes of HD audio, HD video, the ability to add up to 100 participants in a free account, and more. But the most popular feature among these is the ability to add virtual backgrounds to your video feed.
This not only helps you hide your real background for added privacy but also allows you to promote your brand and company by using a customized image. If you have been having trouble with your virtual backgrounds, then we have the perfect guide for you.
The first thing that you would want to do in order to fix your virtual background issue is to check for updates to your Zoom client, be it desktop or mobile. If you are having this issue with your mobile app, simply head over to the Play Store or the App Store depending on your mobile OS and check for updates.
Surprisingly, if you are unable to see the settings for setting a virtual background in your desktop client or mobile app, then chances are that it has been disabled by default and you will need to manually enable it again.
This means that if you have an underpowered PC then the ability to add a virtual background to Zoom might not be available to you. You can check out the system requirements for using a virtual background using this link.
If your custom Zoom background is flipped horizontally and the edges around your body outline seem to be rougher than usual, then make sure you have turned off the mirroring option for Zoom. Follow the guide below to help you disable mirroring for your virtual Zoom background.
If the virtual background set by you is blending with your real background and causing glitches, then chances are that there is not enough light in your environment to help Zoom distinguish between the two.
If you are not using a personal Zoom account and instead are using one provided by your organization or university, then chances are that your organization has disabled the ability to add virtual backgrounds for its users.
To apply an image or video as your background, you cannot just upload any file you have with you and expect Zoom to use it as your virtual background. Zoom only supports the following file formats and file sizes to be used as a virtual background for meetings:
This f..cking Zoom, I have 2 lap tops, on one I can add a digital background, no problem, on the other, as soon as I click on the + sign to add a digital back ground, the explorer windows opens, the cursor turns, and then the f..king window closes. Anybody have any Ideas??? I have done all the updtaes, I have reinstalled zoom already a million times with always the same result.
Basically, i only get the option for image background and not video. i have no idea why my classmates have a video background and how they do it, and i have a good amount of light behind me and my background is still glitching so much it even got and blended in my face. I have no idea why zoom is like this. But thanks for the ways to fix it.
As of writing this, Zoom does not support person/face-detection based virtual background in their Linux-version software. The solution below helps achieve the similar effect, and since it creates a virtual webcam, you can most likely use this solution for any apps that use a webcam, for example, Microsoft Teams. These instructions were originally posted by @BenTheElder, and IMO is a super fun and neat project, especially if you are into computer vision. -source-virtual-background/
As others have pointed out already, virtual background without green screen is not yet supported by zoom for Linux. There is a feature request for this in the zoom developer forum. Maybe supporting it can help making this feature a priority:
After you do this, your Zoom PC client should be the latest version, which should let you use virtual backgrounds without hiccups, if the problem you were facing was because of a failed update or bug.
If you notice that your custom Zoom virtual background is flipped horizontally and that there are rough edges around your body outline, then ensure that you have switched off the mirroring option in Zoom.
Any update on this? I have the same setup with the Zoom for VDI on the VDI VMs and the Zoom Plugin for VMware Horizon Client (MediaPlugin) on the client computers. Zoom meeting works great with video (and virtual background) and audio. Zoom Phone sounds terrible to the destination calls. The source caller can hear the destination people just fine. Weird.

First things first, you'll want to make sure your PC or Mac system is running an up-to-date version of the Zoom Desktop Client (4.6 or higher for macOS and 5.2 or higher for Windows) to use a Zoom virtual background without a green screen. You only need version 3.5 for both macOS and Windows to use virtual backgrounds with a physical green screen. If you need to manually update your system, you can tap on your profile picture in your Zoom Desktop Client then select "Check for Updates."
The Zoom desktop application is a stand-alone program you can download and install in order to attend or host Zoom meetings. The desktop application is generally recommended over the web portal for joining and hosting meetings. You can change some settings in the desktop application itself (for example, setting a virtual background) and will still use the web portal for other account settings.
Do note that once you select a virtual background on mobile, the same background will be used for your future meetings! To disable it, go ahead and follow the above steps, but rather than choosing a photo, select None.
You'll want to scope the policy to users that have zoom installed and exclude users with the version you are installing or newer using smart groups. I use the patch management feature to help with this scoping.
So it will be one single ongoing check-in policy to deploy the latest ZoominstallerIT package with the deferral duration set to 1 day. The users will get the prompt when the policy runs to start the installation now, in 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours or 1 day. The target will exclude the machines already got the latest versions we deploy so the policy should only run once on each machine. For the ongoing maintenance, this means there will be only two things to be updated: the package in the policy and the zoom-latest-installed smart group criterial application version number. No flushing log, No patch management, No forced application quit or sudden interruption to the user's Zoom meeting.
On my shirt I have a graphic of an abominable snowman. He is white and light blue. When I applied a background with white or blue, the zoom camera also found the graphic on my shirt and applied background to it.
When I tried a gradient, the Zoom cutout around me stuck to my movements really well. The virtual background was not visually noisy, and I appeared in front of it in a very natural way. I would say a subtle gradient is my favorite virtual background on Zoom meetings.
