I'm getting my first controller (ddj400) delivered next week. I plan on using it on my windows desktop pc just to start learning and getting the hang of it until I get myself a mac. I will be using Rekordbox since it's included with the controller.
I currently use Spotify as my "music library", I have all my relevant playlists there. I was wondering, what would be my best option for having all of my music I have on Spotify be available to me on Rekordbox for mixing? (I understand that Spotify itself will not work)

I've taken a look at Beatport, but the price of that is a bit agressive IMO (15$/mo for the lowest quality option), and there has been a couple of songs that I have on spotify that I didn't find there.
I've looked at TIDAL, and that seemed pretty nice, the price is more acceptable too, but I'm not sure if that is compatible with Rekordbox? Will I be able to just import and get all my music from there?

Beatport Streaming is the only streaming service that allows DJs to store music offline for playback without an internet connection. To add tracks to your library, follow these simple steps:

The first option, Import, will create duplicates track in your rekordbox collection. The first copy will point to your local copy that you imported in step 2, while the second copy will point to your external USB location. This is dumb.

My use case is as follows- My main collection is in Traktor and that is where I normally work. I am shifting to Rekordbox slowly with the idea to run on both DJ software for a while before deciding to fully jump.

Either way, using the convert option and selecting Musical Key works as a work around, if it is a problem. I can only test with a new batch of songs, making sure I get Traktor to write the musical keys to the file tags and then do the sync Traktor > Lexicon > Rekordbox.

We have broken down the basics of the software in this video tutorial. There are a few different ways you can physically get the music onto your preferred device, however here is the quickest and most convenient.

Tip* If you already have music organised into playlists in iTunes then you can open the iTunes tab in Rekordbox, right-click on each playlist and import to the collection that way. If you have crates in Serato/Traktor then you can drag and drop from either straight into Rekordbox.

After importing music to your collection, it is worth organising it into playlists within Rekordbox. To create a playlist, right-click on the playlist header in the left-hand navigation and create a playlist.

You can import any music from your USB device onto any computer or laptop running Rekordbox, along with all the saved hot cues and track preparation. To do this plug your USB device in, navigate to the Devices panel within Rekordbox, right-click any playlist and select Import.

Thanks for your post! Before I met an issue on import music to Rekordbox, especially Apple Music. Luckily, I found a tool called DRmare Apple Music Converter in a forum. It helps me convert Apple Music to common audio formats and then I can transfer Apple Music to Rekordbox.

Hi, i bought the xdj-rx2 yesterday and i am trying to get my head around rekordbox. I have been using traktor for years and have an external usb drive with more than 1 tb of music on it. What is the easiest way of getting that to work with th rx2? Copy to different drive and then copy it from one drive via export or synch? I want all my music and not just a couple of playlists. Is that possible?
Thanks,
jerry

Hey, the best thing to do would to either keep all your tracks where they are but buy another external drive for DJing with. You can then drag and drop all your music into Rekordbox from your current drive/library for analysis. After analysis use either the sync manager to export playlists or select all in the collection, right click and export to your new drive. Therefore you will have a back up of your music library as well as a working drive for DJing with.

As far as the usb works with Rekordbox it will never show the playlists when exploring your USB in the finder on a mac or in devices on windows. The playlists show up when the USB is plugged into a Rekordbox ready player from Pioneer. The hardware organises the music in all those artist sub folders into the different playlists etc.

This could well the case yes. The best way to double check that your music is on your device is to open your device in rekordbox and click on all tracks, or click to open the playlists tab in your device. This will show you exactly what is on your device and which playlists are there.

Will rekordbox treat an android phone as a usb device for syncing purposes? All I wish to do is use rekordbox for main organisation and familiarise myself with the playlists I create on the move by playing them back? Dare I believe its as simple as selecting the android phone as a usb device and clicking sync as above?
Tx

If you are used to Serato DJ or Traktor, then Rekordbox can be confusing to comprehend at first, but with our simple guide to organizing music in Rekordbox, you will soon realize how much more effective it can be.

As with any music management software, Rekordbox has to analyze the files so it can prepare the library, both for performance and organizing. This means it basically chews and digests each track to display more accurate waveforms, a beat grid, and all the meta tag information needed.

Rekordbox offers the choice of dynamic or static (normal) analysis of the tracks you import. Static analysis is ideal for tracks that have a static BPM. But if you have tracks where the BPM or tempo varies you will want to choose the Dynamic analysis mode.

You will find the My Tag section on the far right of the screen next to the library. Clicking on the Tag icon will open up the My Tag window where the first three tags are already assigned; Genre, Components, and Situation.

Perhaps the most convenient way to organize your music in Rekordbox is using Playlists. They are very easy to set up to manage larger collections. You can either drag and drop a whole folder into the playlist tab as described earlier or simply press the plus icon to create a new playlist.

Rekordbox calculates your track data and then organizes the music into playlists according to the criteria you have chosen. It could be custom tags you have created in My Tag, genre, import date, BPM, or a combination of many criteria.

As I have hopefully demonstrated in the guide above, Rekordbox is a powerful tool when it comes to organizing your music collection. Many would argue it is the strongest on the market, outshining competitors like Serato or Traktor.

There is no right or wrong way to organize your music in Rekordbox, every DJ has their own tastes, and system for sorting their library. The main thing is to ensure you can make out where tunes are located in your library and do so as efficiently as possible.

RCT has been developed by independent Mac developer ATGR, the company that is also responsible for the popular DJ Conversion Utility (DJCU), a widely used app for moving music collections to and from Rekordbox from other major DJ platforms.

So this question gets asked a lot. There is no clear yes or no answer here, it's mostly subjective and heavily depends on the type of music you play. The only thing I can do is explain how it works and help you figure out if you should be using dynamic analysis in Rekordbox.

For an electronic/EDM track that has one big tempo change (e.g. going from house to trap) it sounds really useful for Rekordbox to detect this automatically. But even with music created by a computer, Rekordbox can't seem to decide on a BPM.

Now if you are mixing tracks that aren't made with software but recorded in a studio or live performance then the human element is introduced. Even professional musicians can't be as accurate as a computer. The BPM will vary slightly during the track and cause your beatgrid to be out of sync with the music. This is hardly noticeable at the start but near the end of the track it can be very noticeable.

Music that might benefit from dynamic BPM are genres like rock, jazz, funk, soul and more. Or if your music comes from vinyl, you may find dynamic BPM helpful. If you're not sure if your music came from vinyl, then it probably didn't. Downloads, CD's, Beatport, iTunes, it's all digital.

Electronic/EDM music almost never needs dynamic BPM. Only when a track has a tempo change mid-way can dynamic BPM be useful, but it's better to set a beat marker manually. Read more about that below.

If you only play electronic music (techno, house, drum & bass, etc) then I'd absolutely advise you to turn dynamic BPM off. The occasional track with a tempo change should be done manually.

If you mix instrumental music like rock, jazz, soul or funk then you can consider turning it on. I'd advise you to analyze a few tracks with dynamic BPM and try it out. If you don't notice a difference, just leave it off.

To convert Spotify music to MP3 format and transfer to Rekordbox, you are strongly recommended to use NoteBurner Spotify Music Converter. It is an excellent Spotify music downloading and converting tool to record Spotify songs, playlists, podcasts and convert them to MP3, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, WAV, or ALAC with 100% original quality kept.
